Goodbye unwanted copies

Ditch duplicate files with this utility.

This program scans and locates duplicate files on your computer. It's easy to use and navigate; however, we found its search capabilities too limited.

Duplicate File Remover's interface isn't flashy, but it is easy to use and navigate. Simply open the application and select which folder(s) on your computer that you want to search, and the search will begin. When the search is finished, a summary of all found duplicate files is displayed. From there, you have the option of deleting, copying, moving, or hard-linking the files. For our tests, we knew we had some duplicate files in our My Pictures folder, so we started there first. Our duplicate files had similar names, but not exactly the same name. We were disappointed to find that Duplicate File Remover only located files that had the exact same name. If there were an option for searching for files using keywords, this application would be much improved. The program will search for duplicate files that are not saved in the same folder, so if you have an idea of which folders on your computer contain duplicates, this is helpful.

The program has a Help file which can be accessed by pressing F1. You have 30 days to try Duplicate File Remover, which is plenty of time to learn its ins and outs. The trial version installs and uninstalls with no problems, but it does create a desktop shortcut without asking. Overall, we think that Duplicate File Remover is a useful application, but it would be even more useful with more robust search capabilities.
