Real Racing is the best racing game we've seen yet for the iPhone and that's no small feat, considering the number of racing games out there for the platform. The game features excellent graphics, a well-designed control system, several game modes to try, and an online component to compare best track times. You also can unlock 30 different cars in three different classes, including several hatchback, sedan, and muscle car models.
What sets Real Racing apart from other racing games are the controls. While other games have done a fairly good job with controls on the iPhone, the sensitive accelerometer steering in Real Racing somehow gets it just right. This is due, in no small part, to the autobraking feature that teaches you the best speed at which to enter turns. As you spend more time with the game, you can adjust a slider to assist your braking as little or as much as you want, letting you slowly test the limits of your racing abilities. These two features make Real Racing both easy to pick up and play and difficult to master as the AI gets harder in later levels.
The online component is better than expected, going beyond a simple global high-score list. In Real Racing you can enter leagues to compete against other racers in real time. Online players compete to get the best lap in a given time limit. This setup lets you race a few heats in order to improve your time within the set time limit. Firemint says it will offer more online options later (live racing on 3G?), but out of the gate, the game already offers more than other racing games.
Overall, Real Racing is the best racing game yet for the iPhone. Great-looking graphics and smart controls paired with multiple cars and championships give this game plenty of replay value. If Firemint adds more options, like a true multiplayer system, the game can only get better with updates.
