Featured Freeware: ZSoft Uninstaller

Although we love freeware Revo Uninstaller here at CNET Download.com, ZSoft Uninstaller should appeal to users who want something better than the native Windows installer, but don't need all the extraneous features. As the developer promises, ZSoft Uninstaller is indeed far superior to the native Windows program uninstaller. The freeware first runs the unwanted program's original uninstall option before cleaning up with its own technology. But for a more thorough uninstall, ZSoft Uninstaller offers an analyze function that you can use during the initial installation of programs to track exactly which files are being added to your system.

Later, when you want to uninstall a program, you can click the Analyzed Programs tab and rest assured that when you uninstall the program every associated file will be included. The search box for finding specific programs and the capability to get rid of temporary files are useful additions.

ZSoft Uninstaller works well, although it's not as robust as Revo. Even though it may not have all the chrome of the competition, when it comes to getting its core task done--uninstalling unwanted applications--ZSoft Uninstaller is a good choice.

Why do you write an article about a program just to say that you think Revo Uninstaller is better in all possible ways? Just write an article about Revo instead, since that's the program we should be using since it's better. An article about that would actually be interesting.

I have tried both Revo and ZSoft, they boyh are good uninstallers. Revo is a little more robust than ZSoft but you need to carefully read how to use them. Otherwise could be uninstalling items you don't want to, especially when comes to the registry.

ZSoft is good. It's very light and it gets the job done. Revo is better with all its features and all, but I'm fine using ZSoft.

The problem with install time analyzers is that installs often occur over two or even more steps.

Those that require a reboot, because they install a service, often complete the install on that reboot - the analyzer wont pick up those changes.

Many apps do much of the install on first execution, especially the creation of entries in Documents & Settings and the Vista equivalent. On systems with multiple user ids then entries in the user areas of D&S are created when the app is first used by that user - i.e. possibly weeks later.

Install time analyzers mandate that you do NOTHING else while the install is happening. An install of a complex product - an install of VS2008 from DVD takes at least 30 mins, why should one not read & write emails while that's happening - none unless one is dependent on an install time analyzer.

I have tried a few uninstallers - some are too complicated and I keep them in reserve for the odd occasion when I have a stubborn programme. The advantage of Zsoft is that it is light and does virtually what the built in windows unininstaller does - but without the annoying delay that the latter takes while building the list (especially if you have loads of programmes installed) The name search box works very well too
