Two quick fixes for Firefox 3

by Seth Rosenblatt

Just looking at the download count from Mozilla for the first 24 hours of Firefox 3, it looks like the browser upgrade is one of the fastest-adopted new program versions ever. Eight million downloads in the first 24 hours can't be wrong, right? Of course, no new program--even one as heavily beta-tested as FF3--is problem-free, and so I've got two fast course corrections for those struggling with incompatible plug-ins and Flash foul-ups.

Let's look at Flash first. Towards the end of my use of Firefox 2, before upgrading to Firefox 3, I noticed a peculiar Flash problem: embedded videos would freeze after two or three seconds. Clicking on the video progress bar would start playback again, only to have it freeze shortly thereafter.

It took some digging on the Flash and Mozilla help forums, where people suggested everything from disabling any ad-blocking plug-ins to tweaking how Firefox handles cookies--all to no avail. Then I struck gold. The solution, as simple as it is, is to simply uninstall Flash 9. I recommend using the Revo Uninstaller.

Then, grab the Flash 10 beta for Windows or Mac.

I can't guarantee that this will work for everybody, but since I was having the problem on my home and work computers and the Flash 10 beta solution fixed it on both, I'm reasonably confident that it should work for most of you.

For most incompatible add-on issues, I'd recommend MR Tech Toolkit or the Nightly Tester Tools. The former is a nearly omnipotent plug-in that can kill the compatibility check for all plug-ins, among its other powers. Nightly Tester Tools removes that check on a case-by-case basis. However, that won't work for all users, and some people need Firefox 2 for only one or two specific tasks.

Nightly Tester Tools makes its case for compatibility on a plugin-by-plugin basis.

If you're on a Mac, I'd recommend using the Multi-Firefox app. For PC users, the best bet is to download the portable version of Firefox 2. You can't run both versions simultaneously, but you can have them both installed since they have different profile locations--just quit one before you start the other.

Also, for Firefox lovers and haters who missed out on the Firefox 3 chat that Webware editor Rafe Needleman and I just did, you can check out the Ask the Editors archive.

Will the beta upgrade by itself? I do betas for web browsers, and demos but my much needed flash player?

suggest using the adobe uninstaller. Revo is darn good but it too is not omnipotent, Adobe uninstaller removed stuff relating to Flash 8 that Revo missed, that stuff caused me problems.

wouldn't rely on Adobe auto-updating beta, when its released Downloads will hopefully let you know

It's possible to run Firefox Portable and the normal Firefox as long as you place a configured "FirefoxPortable.ini" in the directory of Firefox Portable.

I found that while using the multi tab especially while you are working for details from your other registered accounts or websites, the back button cannot be used, which means one has to go through the history and select the link.

In Firefox 2.0, if you click on the back arrow, it would take you to the previous window yu were working on in the same window.

This helps a lot if you are trying to edit the pages or change some info or details.

Let me know if there is any other way to use Firefox 3 where I can go back to the previous page from the browser itself.

thanks in adance.

This is a bad idea.....I have noticed a problem w/ flash 10 beta and FF3...much more annoying than the one you described. Try clicking on the pause button, or try to advance the timeline control, or audio of a movie. Rough huh? If you click a little above it then it works, or you can click a bunch of times in rapid succession to make it work. Either way, unless you NEED flash 10b I would stick w/ flash player 9, its much less of a hassle.

I haven't been able to reproduce the error with needing to click multiple times or advance the timeline. However, I did an upgrade install from Flash 9 to Flash 10 rather than a fresh install of the Flash plugin. I am also on Windows Vista if that throws in another variable.

RESTART FIREFOX

Whenever Flash stalls for me, I've found that restarting Firefox solves the problem for a variable amount of time. On rare occasions it's required 2 restarts, but one usually lasts for hours. If you've got 10 or 20 tabs open this can be a problem.

I use to think it was a problem with an extension conflict. It's good to know the real reason. I think I may wait for the Flash 10 release to get out of Beta though.

zeterian: i looked at the tabs issue, but was able to replicate the problem with only one tab. i haven't had any stability problems with flash 10b so far.

I had the same flash problem but just went and reinstalled the normal flash 9 (without uninstalling ... I'm bad) and it fixed it.

Tell you what's been driving me crazy ... the jerkiness {i.e., tried clicking on one post---only one of countless examples---& ended up opening one about an inch away, since the click where I was trying didn't register as the page jerked up/down.

Also, hard to scroll halfway fast, let alone smoothly, so things move slowly ... and in email, plus sometimes in posts, I cannot move cursor back *UP* without manually grabbing the "move" bar on the RH side of the page for whatever, & then it's still jerky.

ON YOUR INSTRUCTIONS PAGE, there was something re an ADD-ON to fix it. Well, it didn't really work ....................... I'm so sad, b/c I've loved FF for years. ;o(

The adobe flash uninstaller is available here
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=1

Detailed instructions on updating the Flash player are here
http://blogs.cnet.com/8301-13554_1-9916676-33.html

Another Firefox 3 tweak is to restore the colored address bar that flags secure web pages. I wrote about that here
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13554_3-9974221-33.html

Problems with new software are to be expected, I suggest trying the portable edition of Firefox 3 while still keeping version 2 installed. This way you can acclimate yourself to v3 slowly and insure it doesn't cause you any problems.
