12 must-have add-ons for Firefox 3

Extensions, plug-ins, add-ons, whatever you want to call 'em, Firefox 3 has 'em. In fact, though it may seem that many of your favorites haven't yet updated, you might be in luck. By visiting the home pages of several of the plug-ins I use, I found that most of them had either a functional, stable beta or a full update ready to use with Firefox 3. This collection of add-ons I use both at home and in the office, and can be used for the Windows, Mac, and Windows Portable versions of the browser.

You wouldn't think that AdBlock Plus is an essential plug-in, but once installed it changes the way you look at the Web--literally. By block advertisements from appearing, you can approach a somewhat more zen-like, 1996-looking Internet experience. Well, not really, but there's definitely a lot less clutter staring back at you.

Session Manager and Tab Mix Plus are must-haves for tab and browsing session management. Tab Mix Plus gives you what feels like an infinite amount of control over tab behavior, from how they open to how they close. It's a little overwhelming how much you can do with this add-on, so I recommend checking out the Download.com Tab Mix Plus user's guide.

Session Manager does for sessions what Tab Mix Plus does for tabs. Although TMP does save sessions, I found that to be the one feature that was lacking: during browser crashes, it often lost my tab sessions. Session Manager sorts out that problem fast, and allows you to keep and recall multiple tab and browsing sessions at will--among its other excellent features.

When Firefox is your main browser, there's rarely a just cause for the casual user to open up Internet Explorer. For the rest of us, IE Tab eliminates all the other reasons by forcing Firefox to render a page using the Internet Explorer engine. You must have IE installed on your machine for this plug-in to work, but the convenience and saved resources can't be beat.

FoxyTunes remains a top-notch plug-in and gets points for being one of the few to introduce new features with its update. FoxyTunes 3.0 adds the ability to turn any page into a playlist, as long as the Web page has music already embedded in it. For those who are new to this plug-in, though, it does much more. It lets you control your media player from the Firefox toolbar, and supports more than two dozen players including iTunes, WinAmp, MediaMonkey, Pandora, Last.fm, and more.

Fast approaching seven free gigabytes of online storage, you can turn your Gmail account into something more than a mere e-mail client with Gmail Space. The FTP-style split-screen interface is instantly recognizable, and it sends you an e-mail notification when you upload a file. Create a simple filter and a label and you never have to worry about transferring files again--as long as Google's servers remain impregnable, at any rate.

FaviconizeTab and Tab Scope are the perfect one-two punch for a tab addict such as myself. FaviconizeTab utilizes a hotkey command to turn any tab into the size of a favicon. This won't stop you--or me--from having 20 or even 40 tabs open, but it makes them take up a lot less space. Tab Scope provides Opera-style mouse-over previews of your tabs. So, if you can't remember what your faviconized tabs were, perhaps a quick preview snapshot will jog your memory.

The All-in-One Sidebar handles the new Add-on window without complaint--even if it's a bit inelegant.

Like AdBlock Plus, you don't know you need DragDropUpload until you install it. The add-on gives you the ability to drag a file from your desktop into any text field in a Web page. Lightweight but extremely effective, if you e-mail a lot of attachments, this should quickly become a massive time-saver.

Download Statusbar is a tool I use at work for discovering the absolute URL for files that I'm downloading. It can be used for much more, though. It opens a second status bar when you begin downloading a file, and lets you manage the download via context menu options. I'm not a huge fan of having to open many of Firefox's secondary features in new windows, and I find this to be much more convenient.

AIOS, or the All-In-One-Sidebar, allows me to force the Add-ons and Downloads windows in a sidebar, but it also creates a collapsing sidebar that comes with a secondary toolbar. I have it set open my bookmarks, history, and page info as well as add-on and download lists, but I also use the toolbar to hold links to FireFTP, Gmail Space, my Del.icio.us bookmarks, and a "Restart Firefox" button provided by MR Tech Toolkit (formerly known as Local Install).

Do you have a favorite Firefox extension that has--or hasn't--been updated for Firefox 3? Tell me about it in the comments below.

CNET Update Watcher is apparently still not viable under FF3.

Considering that extension was last updated in October of 2006, that's not surprising. :)

Actually, if you install Nightly Tester tools, you can make the Addon functional with FF3.

Both the IE Tabs plugin and the FireFTP ones don't have updates.

IE Tab works too. Unlike Tab Mix, it auto-updated after installing FF 3.0. And MANY thanks for the Tab Mix Plus link! I was TRULY missing that! Past those two, I'm only currently missing a few fun ones: STOP Hammertime!, InfoLister, Homeland Security Threat Level, and the Wizz RSS News Reader. My next task is to find new skins, since Acid Burn and Noia aren't 3.0 legal. I wish the Firefox add-on site could either sort by version compatibility, or, since it seems to pick up the browser version, only show what I can install, instead of showing everything and THEN telling me I can't install it! :(

By "they" I assume you mean Real. They are the ones responsible for the update. Mozilla (or CNet) has nothing to do with it.

Indeed they do. I miss this one very much.

Google Browser Sync doesn't work with Firefox 3, it's very useful for keeping Bookmarks, Passwords etc synced on multiple PCs.
I've just tried Firefox 3 Portable on my USB stick and Google Browser Sync was the only one of my add-ons not to work. Fire FTP updated automatically.

Google Browser sync will never work with Firefox 3. It's being discontinued.

@jsp21c

You can try foxmarks bookmarks synchronizer, works well for me.

As a side note, Mozilla is working on something called 'weave', that will sink your books marks extenstions and so on.
They are developing it currently at mozilla labs:

I've been using Tab Mix Plus for a long time now. Unfortunately, for some reason, it didn't work with Firefox 3, among a list of other add-ons I use every day, such as FoxGame and All-In-One Gestures. Worse than that, it was a struggle even to revert to Firefox 2. I documented the whole experience on my blog: http://beardseye.blogspot.com/2008/06/firefox-3-five-act-tragedy.html

Don't know if someone has mentioned this or not, but there is now a link to where you can get the updated Tab Mix Plus at the add-ons page for it that works with FF3. I have it installed now and it's working fine. For gestures there's some other "gesture" ad-ons that work in FF3, or there's always Opera 9.5.

I tried Firefox 3 a few months ago before its official release. What a nightmare that was! At that time, the browser conflicted with all of my Firefox extensions. I finally went into my program files (after hours of problem solving), and manually deleted every single Firefox folder and sub folders except my bookmarks. I was finally able to install Firefox 2 and reinstall all extensions and have everything functioning properly once again.

There's more important adons for firefox but using more ad ons will slow down your browsing experience too. so install adons only those are important to you just see here for adons that are suit to you and more important , Firefox has more than thousand adons for many tasks but we should understand that we can't install all of them so I suggest you to choose only ad ons that are suit for you and important to you

The text size toolbar is a must for me when i stumble out of bed and read the headlines over coffee in the morning. And while the Get Mail button transferred over to firefox 3 it was acting quite buggy.

I too have always like FF. However, with FF3 it doesn't have support for different skins (themes I think FF calls them). Unless I missed something. Does anyone know if there are any of the old skins available?

I've got FF3 on 2 of my machines but am holding back on 2 others until the new skins are avai.

It seems that IE Tab only works with FF3 if you have had it installed under a previous version of Firefox. Once you upgrade to FF3, it finds the update, installs and works, yay!

However, if you haven't had IE Tab installed under a previous version of Firefox, load FF3 and then proceed to install IE Tab, it won't work. Hopefully they come out with a fix soon :D

McAfee Site Advisor (free from McAfee) has been updated today to work with FF3. My resume is posted on a couple of job boards and I get some bogus emails claiming to have jobs available. Put the site in a search engine and let SiteAdvisor tell me if it has been tested - green-yellow-red. Also available for IE.

I tried 3 times FF3 beta but was disappointed for lack of stability & non-availability of some of my favorite plug-ins like Cooliris & Picalens which are still for only FF2.
