First Look video: Spyware Terminator

by Jessica Dolcourt

Spyware removal, real-time protection, and integrated antivirus for free? These compelling ingredients form the siren song of Spyware Terminator. Digging out spyware is the security tool's chief job description, but the application also adds real-time blocking and integrates the free ClamWin Antivirus tool at your behest. Spyware Terminator scans and zaps on three levels, and helps guard against malicious code swimming in through applications, system files, and the Internet.

Spyware Terminator is great, but I wouldn't rely on ClamWin -- perhaps NOD32, http://avscan.blogspot.com/2008/03/eset-nod32-antivirus-v30-review.html, or Avast (in the free category), http://avscan.blogspot.com/2008/01/avast-47-home-edition-review.html. As an antispyware alternative, Spybot S&D has survived on my PC for as long as I can remember, http://techqi.blogspot.com/2008/01/miscellaneous-security-software-part-1.html, and I'd still pick it over ST.

Forget about Spybot. It is absolutely WORTHLESS according to a writer for PC World and PC Magazine. I have to agree after using it, and finding that after PURPOSELY infecting a test system with spyware..... it cleaned NONE of it.
It appeared to at first, but actually didn't.

I think best solution is have a antivirus that has spyware protection too. Also if you be careful with working on net and persons who never know you before then there is more chance to protect from spywares
Good Spyware Removal Software has many kind of features some of them are .

1) It offer complete protection from spyware, key loggers, remote acess Trojans (RATS), browser hijackers and ad ware
2)good spyware program will offer automatic updates, to provide protection from the latest spy ware threats.

another annoying pop up program. for all the people who think they need an arsenal of security programs i'm sure you've added this real time junk to it. combine spyware terminator, comodo firewall and winpatrol and you'll have yourself a pop up circus on your screen. don't forget spybot to add itself to the array of never ending security prompts.

Remmeber!
U can control/ change it with those setting.
So annoying is just for newbie opinion^^

With no due respect, you are wrong. ST allows you to turn of the HIPS which creates the pop-up warnings. Spybot can't do that! And you do not have to install ClamAV or the Crawler toolbar, either. Your choice. Freedom to choose.

Great program. I run it at start-up everyday. I would still use an anti-virus program like avast! or Avira.

Guys, use Ad-Aware 2008 (the newest version), Microsoft Vista and Norton Internet Security 2008. Haven't had ONE piece of spyware on my Vista machine because of the integrated checks in Vista, nor any viruses because NIS2008 zaps them if my machine even downloads them.
Ad-Aware 2008, I just use to make sure that there is no spyware/adware on my system, and thus far..... haven't found anything but browser cookies.

This is great for free software. However, the main problem I have is scanning speed. While the spyware engine is reasonably fast for real-time scanning, it is incredible slow for on-demand tasks. Also, the ClamAV frontend is awful. Real time scanning with it while bring your PC to a halt. On demand scanning can take hours for when other products take minutes. And on top, it's not that good. I love open source projects, but this one's protection is not worth the system drain. Another issue with this is that it installs things other than the main program. On the system status screen (or something like that), it will automatically recommend that you install anti-phishing toolbars and the ClamAv engine. Anti-phishing toolbars take up screen real estate and are empirically proven to not work because people don't pay attention to them (see Winter 2007 issue of Cryptobytes). And the ClamAV engine pretty much sucks. Security software is supposed to be something that you can install and forget about. This is anything but that - it will bring your system to a halt and is not that good at doing its job. A better bet would be to use a commercial program like NOD32.

I use ST & like it. However, I suspect that the Integrated Clam AV is behind AVG, Avast, & Antivir in quality of detection & removal of viruses.
But ST is still a useful addition tool in our weapons against viruses & spyware.
The ClamAV is an OPTIONAL extra.
