Yahoo Messenger goes big with new beta

Yahoo Messenger 9 beta

The status update is the most obvious new addition in the latest Yahoo Messenger 9.0 beta.

On Friday, Yahoo released a new 9.0 beta version of the popular Yahoo Messenger chat client. The company may not have changed the version number at all, but it did add a boatload of new features and changes for those of us who like to play with software on the edge.

The most obvious change in the new release is an additional status message at the top of Messenger. Along with the conventional "Available," "Busy," and the like, there's now an additional line for Facebook-style status updates, such as "Surfing YouTube for Andy Rooney Game videos."

The other big change is larger emoticons. Since the Yahoo emoticons are likely the only reason I actually use Messenger instead of multiservice clients such as Trillian, Pidgin, or Digsby, I was very curious to see what these new emoticons looked like...and to learn if there are there any new ones!

The six newest emoticons express some necessary visual statements, but they only work with other Yahoo Messenger 9 beta users.

There are certainly six new ones--don't want to see (X_X); hurry up (:!!); rock on (\m/); thumbs up (:-bd); thumbs down (:-q); and my personal fave, it wasn't me (^#(^). The size change is barely noticeable, but the new ones are fun. I can only assume that there are more secret emoticons to discover, as well.

The coolest addition in this latest beta release is a new "Compact List" view for the main contacts display. The default view uses bigger avatar images and created a lot of scrolling for me, which I hate. The Compact List view now lets me view all of my online contacts, with virtually no scrolling at all.

Unfortunately, the install process for Yahoo Messenger beta is loaded with some sketchy behavior, such as forcing users to opt out of browser home page and default search-engine changes. It also hides the opt-out selection for the Yahoo Toolbar behind a "Custom Install" link. Users who run the standard install process will soon find Yahoo in their browsers, with no foreknowledge. Boo!

C'mon, Yahoo. That's bush-league installation behavior. Such good products deserve better treatment. All of those facets of the Yahoo service should be opt-in. I think you'd agree?

Isn't it a standard practice in the industry? google comes as a default and only available search engine in Safari. Also, it changes your default search engine to google when you install google tool bar and other stuff. NO?

I can't imagine that you can't add more search engines in Safari (just like you can in Firefox - where Google is also the default).

As far as the default search engine with Google Toolbar - just like Yahoo! you have to be careful when you install it. There is a checkbox (that is pre-selected) asking if you want to make Google your default search engine. If you don't, just un-check it.

Just because other company's do the same things or even more does not make this pradtice right. I want to know what is being installed on my computer and I want to be able toapprove or reject anything that is being put on my computer other than the main program be they tool bars or search engines.

Is it just me...or does that look A LOT like windows live messenger interface just yahoo-ified... fact if you go through most of the new features listed...it is what the live version of messenger has been for awhile, excepting the new emoticons. Might this update be a way to even out the feature difference between them, since their networks are interoperable anyways?

You are right, it looks a lot like Live Messenger. Not sure if it means anything though.

I do not like having to install things on my computer I do not want. Hiding toolbars is one of the lowest things a company can do, as well as change your search engine. I also downloaded this BETA 9 and less than an hour I had a virus. This is the 1st virus I have had in over 3 years and the only way it could have came through my computer is by Yahoo Messenger Beta 9

Yahoo, get rid of all the "BOTS" and the jerks that bounce you out of Yahoo Rooms. When you strighten that up, you will see me back. I guess you will never see me again. How sad they; can't figure how to stop the bots.

The "BOTS" are a part of Yahoo messenger and Yahoo messenger is for all yahoo users. With that in mind, if you don't like them you have the option of staying out. Consider also that you may be getting bounced because the jerk may be on your end of the line.

I used the beta, but removed it. It doesn't have a webcam feature. I can only hope it will return in the live version.

I previosly used Yahoo Messenger often, but with the rampant SPAM bots and annoying IM from all the advertising, I have forced me to lock down my messenger to only accept messages from current friends on my list. I would be more than happy to return to yahoo and their chat rooms if they would do something to uphold their own policy of not allowing spam.

I don't like it. I tried the beta version and there is no more Games section. One of the perks of yahoo messenger is it had one of the best built-in messenger games platforms.
