First Look: Avira Antivir 8.0

Barely noticed before last summer, Avira Antivir has received an increasing amount of attention since garnering the highest score of any free security program on AV-Comparatives independent testing service for on-demand testing.

It fares a bit worse on the "Retrospective/ProActive" test, although still better than any of the other applications tested. However, it's hard to find anybody who finds the virus definition file update speed to be fast: it's notoriously slow. We put Antivir through the CNET Reviews Labs benchmarking process and came up with some unsurprising results.

When running alongside other high-drain processes, such as iTunes file conversion and while running MS Office, Antivir scored high. CA Antivirus and Panda 2008 were the top two products, followed by the premium version of Antivir and then the standard version, but all others tested including AVG Anti-Virus, Kaspersky, and Avast fell in behind them.

The MS Office test produced far less staggering results. With Antivir Personal completing the test in 271 seconds and Antivir Premium finishing in 270. The fastest of the 12 products, Panda 2008, scored 269.67 seconds, while the slowest, F-Sure, hit 273.33, so Avira was more toward the average here than in the other tests.

Overall, Avira slowed down the test machines somewhat, but it caused less drag on system resources than most--but not all--of its competitors. Boot time tests placed it at an average of 30.85 seconds, one second slower than Kaspersky, two seconds slower than BitDefender, and nearly two and a half seconds slower than the premium edition of Antivir. In scan testing, Antivir scored second-fastest after Panda 2008, and nearly three times faster than AVG Anti-Virus 8.0.

Combined with its high marks for removing and preventing infections, I remain convinced that Antivir is the best free antivirus on the market right now.

i'd have to agree with that. i've been impressed with avira ever since my first scan. it found malware that wasn't picked up by kapersky or avg/sophos/norton. i've tried most other free anti-virus programs, and i like it better than most normal "paid for" programs.

light on computer resources, and pretty thorough. it even updated to version 8 when i wasn't payin attention, caught me off guard, wicked stuff. thumbs up jah!

I understand that waiting for your antivirus to scan your computer is an unflattering prospect, but honestly, scan speed can't be the single most important benchmark. What about the fact that you have to manually approve of each and every action for Avira? How much has Avira really changed since its previous version? (here's my very own take: http://avscan.blogspot.com/2008/03/avira-antivir-personal-classic-2008.html)

Don't know about you guys, but that alone is enough to turn me away from any antivirus. If you must go for a free antivirus, I believe it should be Avast (http://avscan.blogspot.com/2008/01/avast-47-home-edition-review.html).

I have seen people comparing Avira and Avast together. In my mind, both of them are almost equal. However, what put Avira on top is their user interface. Most people today want something that they can just click and scan. Avira allows you to do that in 10-15 seconds (including configuration). In addition, Avira is much easier for someone who knows little about computers. On the other hand, it took me 2-3 minutes just to do the same configuration and scanning in Avast.

I have been using antivir for 6-7 years, recommend it to everyone.
My unlicenced and not updated xp runs on it for 3 years with no problem. I also use spybot's guard at the same time though. I very much appreciate antivir team for their free service.

I used AVG free edition for years. Decided to give Avira a try and was pleased with the faster scan time. Another plus is that AntiVir has a built in rootkit scanner. With AVG you had to download a second application to scan for rootkits and the clincher for me to try Avira was the fact that AVG no longer updates there rootkit scanner. For a free anti-virus program you can't go wrong with this.

Have been using this for almost a year now, has to be by far the most impressive antivirus program to date, even their support is pretty good, they r quick to respond to false positive submissions, updates r slow but its hard to complain since ur getting top notch protection for free something which even paid antivirus programs aren't able to do....a near cent percent detection rate is no joke folks!!!, compared to its free contenders avira lacks antispyware protection in the free version which might be the second downside after the updates but freewares like spybot , adaware n spyware terminator are there to fill in the empty space, for folks goin gaga bout avast! heres a wake up call, avira can do most of its detection with just a single shield running in the background n has a relatively faster resident scanner unlike avast which causes the computer to lag a bit during app or PC startup(unless the option to scan dlls on load is unchecked)..the only other resident scanner that could rival avira in terms on scanning speed with top notch detection would be Kaspersky.

Correct. The best FREE Antivirus is Avira, but the best one at all is Kaspersky. Avast is terrible in trojan detection, while AVG has a huge number of false positives. Avira is fast, light, good detection and protection, almost as good as Kaspersky. :)

Avira rox... no doubt about it. Using it for a yr now.. haven't had a single infection ever since!

But the premium version caused slow startups when i installed sp3... so switched to the free ver.

For the attention of tashfeen_m you don't have to manually interact if you go to configuration on the main GUI screen, put a tick next to Expert Mode-
click the plus sign next to scanner then scan-

select- action for concerning files-
from here you can then change the default interactive setting to automatic where you can choose from the five options in the primary drop down box.

UI is great, speed is good, seems like a great free solution. The only issue I have are those friggin pop-up adverts that accompany each update download...Good stuff tho, would recommend this solution.

Avira = something that finds but in 80% of the cased doesn't remove

Anyway, did you compare Kaspersky 2009 in the speed test? I guess you don't even know that it exists.
