AVG Free joins its siblings in the land of 8.0
AVG Technologies, formerly Grisoft, has updated AVG Free to Version 8.0. The other antivirus programs the company publishes updated in March, following AVG's pattern of updating the free version about a month after the paid editions get their new coats of paint.

The new interface follows the trend of left-nav tabs. Compared with the old one, this is a much-appreciated change.
(Credit: AVG Technologies)As before, AVG Free 8.0 features all the essential functions of AVG Internet Security, but none of the bells and whistles. So the new engine is intact, with combined antivirus, antispyware, and the formerly independent LinkScanner technologies rolled into one. However, there's no antirootkit protection, and other features included in AVG Anti-Virus such as instant message and download protections are also missing.

Formerly independent LinkScanner gives AVG Free users a measure of protection against Web sites.
(Credit: AVG Technologies)Overall, the new AVG Free runs better than the older versions. As we noted in our review of the product, the new engine's real-time shield works better than before, and besides the new interface, that's the most noticeable difference. The change to tabbed navigation from the horrible floating boxes of earlier editions is a long-overdue improvement that makes it much easier to focus on what you need out of the program. If you like version 7.5, there's no reason not to upgrade.
However, I'm not overly fond of AVG's habit of not being particularly forthcoming about including features and then disabling them without a more direct warning about what the program does and doesn't do. It's more than a tad bit deceptive--not the best way to treat the multimillions of people who've downloaded the free version of the program.
UPDATED 5/28/2008: After talking with AVG, email scanning is not a trial feature of the program: it is a fully integrated feature. However, it isn't advertised as an included feature, either, which led to confusion on my part. My apologies to readers who were misled by my inaccuracies.

I hated avast! because of that damn interface. I have always loved avg products, and so far
this is the best!

Many of these so called 'reviews' are subjected to financial 'back-handers' and 'favours'.
I'll venture to say that the 'winner' of some of these 'reviews' has given the webmasters of the site/s concerned some very subtle advertising revenue.
So, in this instance of course AV Product X will 'win' the review, simply because they (the company that made Product X) has advertised with the site/s concerned.
I am a registered Beta Tester for a number of companies, [AVG and Microsoft included] and have found that their respective products are very worthy results of a lot of time, effort and energy invested by those faceless programmers that create these products for us computer users.
If it wasn't for those idiots that get some kind of morbid satisfaction out of creating trojans etc., we wouldn't need any AV program installed, and we could all enjoy the benefits of the wealth of knowledge that lies out there in WWW Land.
At least AVG have been prepared to 'give' the Internet community something for nothing...I'd like to see Symantec and McAfee deliver something similar with out the notorious 'resource hog factor'.
10/10 to Grisoft and AVG I say.
I have never seen AVG slow a PC down.
I have lost count how many times I have installed 8.0 (not to mention 7.5) free and Network edition.
I started using it in my market (medical/dental) and 2 of my competitors started using it as well after they learned from me about this product. (many years ago)
Again, this includes the free and paid versions.
Your review states "The good: - none".
You must be getting paid by a competitor. I have found (again, many countless times) that AVG finds more viruses than most of the know top brands available.
Sure its not perfect but none is.
Just a little note, in fact the AVG anti virus DOES include an email scanner! As far as i can gather there is NO 30 day trial for the email to stop? But however i use Windows vista home premium and AVG has "stopped responding" a few time, i'll give it a while and see what happens!
Though it combines a few apps....it freezes your computer!
Stay with avg Free 7.5
Yeah, I've seen the occasional popup in AVG Free edition suggesting the (paid) upgrade to 8.0, but I have installed AVG on hundreds of computers, including many that have AVG Free Edition - and have NEVER seen what you're talking about. Whatever you got hit with was NOT coming from Grisoft.
On installation it will offer a schedule system restart Virus Run, and it does not offer regular scheduled scans, but the product is worth this minor limitation. I also agree with the author that AVG turns off certain fetures without notifying the user.
Avast Free Edition is the one to beat, it works perfectly with Vista and it works great at constantly scanning downstream content of web pages to make sure there is no infect code.
Check it out people.

- I can confirm that AVG Free 8.0 contains only full-functional protection components; there are no 30-day time-out trial functions in the free product.

- Can you explain why so many people are reporting that AVG Free 8.0 is causing their PC's to freeze?
