Featured Freeware: Paint.NET

For quick retouches, Photoshop is more than overkill--it's like going rabbit hunting with a nuke. All that bloat can take much longer than is necessary. Paint.NET, on the other hand, is an open-source editor with all the essentials, including tools to crop, rotate, resize images, adjust colors, and create collages. Unlike many free image editors, Paint.NET supports layers and has an actions manager. The pleasing interface boasts semitransparent windows for ease of use.

Paint.NET supports common image formats--JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, and others--but not high-resolution RAW files. There are enough basic and intermediate effects and features to keep image-tweakers happy, though the red-eye removal tool is notably weak; those images may require manual attention. Way more advanced than Microsoft Paint, this is a must-have for even experienced digital image demigods.

Seth peers into the deep, dark corners of software so that you don't have to. He has yet to suffer a single nightmare about OS/2. You can follow him on Twitter.

It actually does have support for RAW files with these plugins.

I haven't got a camera that saves pictures as RAW files so I'm not sure how well it works.

If you do decide to use these
1 Download the Plugin
2 Open the file where you installed Paint.NET (usually C:\Program Files\Paint.NET)
3 Open the folder called FileTypes (if there isn't one make one)
4 Move the dlls into the folder
5 Close Paint.NET if it is open
6 Open Paint.NET

I really want to use this program but it needs .NET Framework to run. I tried download that too and it didn't work so I never got to use this, unfortunately.

In a single word: WOW. I almost feel guilty using this software, considering I own Adobe Photoshop CS2, I said ALMOST. Adobe Photoshop is definitely a robust piece of software with versatility that is hard to match, but sometimes it's over kill for some of the easier, lighter jobs. Loading up Photoshop is equally painful because it is such a demanding program. Paint.NET however loads in an instant, and while it is missing a number of features that I am used to in Photoshop, considering this software is free and has dozens of plugins available, it is hard to beat for the graphic artist or photographer on a very low budget.

One of the best- its the only thing I use. Its simple and does everything I need it to- and really that is what we're all looking for-usefulness. I would like to see more outputs, like a way to save a project as a photoshop file, maybe a plugin. I use this program everyday for all sorts of projects and it never once has crashed or anything. Very good program!!
