Among the new product announcements at the Macworld 2008 keynote, iTunes received a brand new feature: movie rentals! With the latest version of iTunes for both Windows and Mac, you will be able to rent movies from all the major studios including Touchstone, MGM, Miramax, Lions Gate, Fox, WB, Walt Disney, Paramount, Universal, and Sony. Apple was able to strike a deal with studios which allowed iTunes to receive new releases 30 days after the DVD release. The first wave of movie rentals will launch by the end of February with over 1,000 titles.

Once you find a movie you want to watch in iTunes, you'll be able to use your iTunes Store account to rent the title, making it available on your computer to begin watching for 30 days. Clicking play starts the movie stream in about 30 seconds. Once you start the movie, you'll have 24 hours to finish it, whether you transfer it to your Apple TV, iPhone, or iPod Touch. You can watch the movie as many times as you want in that 24-hour period.

Owners of Apple TV will be able to purchase and download TV shows, music, and more, directly on your Apple TV. This latest version of iTunes will let you transfer purchases made on Apple TV back to your computer.

Rentals will cost $2.99 for library titles and $3.99 for new releases. If you want HD quality, you can rent titles for only a dollar more at $4.99.

Question is, can you access the video file through TiVo much like accessing the MP3 files stored in iTunes? I'm guessing not since the format probably isn't recognized by TiVo, but that would certainly be nice so I don't have to buy the lame Apple TV device.

if TiVo could play them, then i would have interest. but until then, no way. great point jacobus!

Re: movie rentals for apple products. Rather weak and uninteresting...and no big deal in my book. Aplle's rentals are expensive under the proposed pricing plan...their files cost as much or more than DVD's at a brick and mortar rental store....it's an electronically transmitted file, for pete's sake...so...where's the cost savings the apple consumer should be getting? (in SJ's and hollywood's pocket, natch.) Sorry, but this is eminently unexciting and uninteresting.....and the micro thin notebook as well....yawn.

Can we be honest for two seconds? ITunes SUCKS in many MAJOR ways. 7.6 still sucks. The iPod may be a great device but iTunes the software is crap and I'm tired of this fact being glossed over.

1. Giant and frequent downloads. 62MB? ***?
2. In ability to deal with large libraries. I have to select content that's smaller than my iPods capacity from a 3000 CD library? Crap
3. Confusing interface - where am I? Crap

wow!! someone who actually has had the same thoughts i've had since i started using itunes. but i've learned that even though itunes isn't as great as some people may want it to be, it still better than the MS POS.

I agree it is crap bloatware and every release lately messes with my PC!

And you know what else is crap? Apple could not give a rats arse about customers outside of the USA. I live in Sydney Australia and it took years before we even had iTunes available to us even after buying the iPod in Australia and they would never communicate when it would be available to us owners of iPods in Australia. Absolute contempt for customers!

Now we will have to wait YEARS for the same simply ability to be able to rent or buy movies via iTunes. And guess what - like before, they won't tell us anything or give us any confirmed dates of when the same functionality will be available to Australians.

APPLE YOU ARE ARROGANT, SHOW UTTER CONTEMP FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS AND YOU SUCK!

works fine on my Mac, maybe it is your OS. Winblows is the most bloated crap out there.
by fleurya January 18, 2008 12:09 PM PST
1. huh???
2. if you don't like the selection on iTunes, which is much larger than you claim, download music from any other source you want to and import it. Try Amazon's mp3 service.
3. confusing?? Oh, I know what the problem is. Try opening you eyes next time you use it, makes it a lot easier to navigate.

Take a hike, fanboi troll.

iTunes is the most intuitive, integrated, simple to use music jukebox out there. Your just so dumbstuck because iTunes is so easy to use compared to all that PC crap. And by the way anybody could figure out how to deal with a 3000 cd library on iTunes. Maybe u just need to figure out that 300 gigs doesn't fit on a 30 gig hard drive.

Anyone who thinks Itunes is great should have their head examined I agree with you that it is crap. Please people, before you praise software or ipods, see what other people are using that is much much better. I for one love my creative zen vision M love it!!!! screw Ipods

Hey buddy, newsflash, you don't have to have iTunes on your computer!! If it's so bad, why did you download it and have kept it long enough to "mess with your computer" multiple times? You're a bright one, aren't you?
by fleurya January 18, 2008 12:12 PM PST
Do you honestly think Apple is not offering services to other countries because they don't want to? Oh sure, they could make a ton of money by selling to new markets, but they just choose not to out of spite! Yeah, I'm sure the shareholders would really approve.

Friendly tip: You really shouldn't talk about things you don't understand. It makes you look really stupid.

It is very good indeed, but you can only download while in the US. Which means that foreign owners of Apple Tv or Ipods are for the moment left out, as are americans who are travelling in other countries and want to watch a film or download one for the trip back home

The fact that there's a delay in getting software (iTunes) to Australia or any other country is not Apple's fault, its Australia's and the content providers. They have to negotiate with the studios separately on releases in other countries and, as fights with the EU show, they have to modify the iTunes user agreement to comply with that country's laws.

Jason, the rentals are available already. The night of the keynote, I rented one of my favorite classic computer-related movies, "WarGames". There also also new releases like "300" available now.

We're turning into an Apple Nation. I'm tired of it, and will never give in.
They tried movies on Itunes before didn't they? and it didn't work. I doubt this will be that revolutionary.
Microsoft has been trying it with Downloadable content on the Xbox 360 and it's not making a huge splash either. People want to rent and rip their movies. Illegal as it may be, a large population of people do it.

Why the hell did they list Touchstone and Miramax separate from Walt Disney? Both are part of Walt Disney.

We've had an AppleTV since last March (2007). We don't own a regular TV. The AppleTV is connected via HDMI to a receiver which is connected via HDMI to a projector. It has been awesome, primarily because we watch shows and free HD video podcasts that we seek out on iTunes (rather than crap we stumble upon channel surfing) and they are commercial-free. Commercial-free TV = 1/3 of your life back. Now we have movie rentals! My fifteen-year-old thinks this is the absolute best way to rent movies because - as a non-driver - getting to the rental store across town is usually a hassle. I like the potential for carbon footprint reduction.

Apple is doing an amazing job of better phones, music players and computers. I dont see microsoft coming up with anything good lately. Most of you people who complain dont really know much about anything. You think that maybe there are reasons why apple delays releasing products and software in other countries. There is so much red tape when it comes to releasing products especially in the USA. I'm sure Austrailia has there laws as well. Look at compaines like motorola or lg. They release better phones over seas because there is no FCC regulating them. I have never seen a 7mp camera phone in the US. If you dont understand anything about what companies go through to create and release products or software, then dont cry about it. Go to another country, spend their money and buy their products. Apple is far and beyond anything else out there.

Suprisingly none of your Applebitters and haters alike have failed to mention, these downloads are not anywhere near the bitrate or resolution of HD or SD content! These streams are no substitute for DVD rentals and look like crap stretched across any sort of TV screen! With Hi-def coming on strong and larger 50"-75" TVs out, they will look unbareable. To make this a viable solution they will need to make these movies closer to the size of a DVD (at least 4GB) and who has time to wait for a 4GB file to download. Not to mention the fact that most normal people want to rent a movie to watch it on their standard TV or HDTV and not their iphone, appletv, notebook or desktop.

How many of you in the real world actually prefer to watch a movie on your computer vs. a television?

I'm new to the ipod arena so I haven't seen some of the problems seen by others but as far as the new movie feature goes, I'll never use it. Why pay $3.99 for a lower quality rental that I can watch on my PC? If I'm going to pay to watch a movie, I'm going to fire up my wide screen TV and stereo with suround sound and enjoy the movie without the rude people around you find in movie theaters. I'm also going to either use NetFlix and get several movies a month for $1.50 to 2.50 depending on how many I rent a month or there is now a convenient new vending machine in the area McDonalds or grocery stores that vend movies of $1.00 each. Why would anyone pay $3.99 for a downloaded new release movie unless maybe you were going to take it with you on a trip. Oh but don't start it and not finish it within the 24 hour time limit.

iTunes 7.6 is a complete waste of space on your hard drive. I downloaded it and it froze my machine (Macbook, 2.2 ghz, 4gb ram). Approx 75% of the time I open it, I get the damaged iTunes library message. My library loads but it doesn't keep my podcasts and I need to re-subscribe.

Stay away from this upgrade.

I am still dissapointed at price of these rentals. The article says you can watch the movie as much as you want in a 24hr period. What joke! I know this is typical, but can one of these download movie companies please extend this time limit further! With the typical family interuptions in I have never finished a movie I have downloaded in 24hrs.

I also think the CC is stripped from the downloads most of the time to reduce the file size...unless someone knows otherwise. Plus not extra features if you typically watch those on DVDs.

I have always thought that downloaded moves should be cheaper then rentals, but of course they are not and never have been.

This update seriously messed my computer up. Now I can't connect to the iTunes store or open attachments in emails. My antivirus also stopped working. Plus, because I live in Canada I don't have access to movies, movie rentals, or TV shows. Apple needs to get their act together and support everyone else as well. There's a reason everyone hates Americans.
