Killer Download: Top free image editors

by Jason Parker

Killer Download(Credit: CNET Networks)

Once I've taken care of installing security software on a new a PC, one of the first programs I end up downloading is an image editor. Whether I'm using it to make a quick edit to a screenshot, convert a digital photo to a more Web-friendly image format, or even something as mundane as cropping an image for a desktop background, an easy-to-use image editor is a must have. Those of you with recently acquired computers probably have a lot of holiday photos you've resolved to go through, so this little collection will definitely come in handy.

Obviously, Photoshop is the heavyweight champ in the image-editing category, but most people don't need such an advanced toolset for everyday image-editing tasks. Also, $650 (for Photoshop CS3) is not exactly pocket change for most of us. Fortunately there are a lot of options available at a fraction of the cost, and some of the best downloadable image editors are completely free. For those who just need a tool with a modest feature set for everyday tasks, I've rounded up my three favorite free image editors.

IrfanView

For the most lightweight and nimble editor, IrfanView is the best choice

IrfanView is longtime user favorite for its simplicity. It was the go-to for free image editors a few years ago and remains as one of the best for quick image editing. Basic features such as cropping, resizing, and file conversion are all part of the toolset, and if you want more options, there are IrfanView plug-in packs you can download from the IrfanView developer site. This one doesn't have the prettiest interface of the group, but for basic tasks it gets the job done.

FastStone Image Viewer

FastStone Image Viewer's easy-to-access full-screen mode lets you view and edit your images without distraction

FastStone Image Viewer is the program I use to crop and resize screenshots here at work. I even have Photoshop on my hard drive, but it just can't beat the speed and convenience of FastStone Image Viewer. An intuitive interface lets you browse your image folders and select what you want quickly and easily. But my favorite thing about this free program is the ability to double-click an image to bring it up in full-screen mode for closer inspection. You can then mouse to each side of the screen for pop-up tools for editing and basic effects, file management, and image info.

Paint.NET

Paint.NET gives you more effects to play with along with a layer manager and history window.

Paint.NET is a free alternative that is closer to Photoshop than the rest in this collection. Complete with Photoshop-like toolbars, a layer manager, a history window, and more image effects than the others, Paint.NET offers just about everything you might need. Though the feature list is not nearly as long as Photoshop, you can't beat what you can get for free with Paint.NET. The only caveat is you'll need to download Microsoft's .NET framework to run this program.

If you're a digital camera enthusiast or like to scan or collect images, you need a good image editor. These apps are definitely great for the basics and some offer extra features that make them an even better value. As always, if you have a favorite image editor which is not listed here, let me know in the comments!

*Gasp* No Gimp? That's a great program, even though it's a bit difficult to use.

no kidding. The GIMP is the best free image editing app around. It's not exactly a program someone who doesn't know much about tech could use. If you just want simple but useful tools, combined in a user-friendly package to touch up and add small effects to your photos, Paint.NET is the one. If you're hardcore, have the know-how, and are willing to spend months getting used to it, the GIMP is definitely the way to go. It took me over 6 months to finally get used to the interface, and figure out how all the tools work. :)

Yeah, I just recently got Gimp 2.4.2 and, yeah, it's good. It IS difficult to use...at first...and it takes a little time to load when it first starts up on my old laptop, but it's definitely worth trying out, especially if you work with images a lot. And yes, in my experience it's much easier to use than paint shop pro and photoshop, even though it rivals them in functionality (okay, maybe that's a bit much, but then again, maybe not). ; )

Hey guys, I love GIMP! But I was going more for the quick and easy image editors than the full featured ones. Paint.NET was sort of the crossover app. I thought GIMP--and Photoshop for that matter--are a little too unwieldy for this list...

Yeah, GIMP is a bit sluggish. When I'm not using that I usually fall back to MS paint. Or Ultimate Paint.
Can't really remember why, exactly, but I've had some difficulty with the .net framework in the past and so am reluctant to install it now. But maybe I'll try it out for the sake of Paint.NET

Paint.Net is awesome! I can crop, rotate, adjust coloring, etc. With user created plugins updated all the time, small file size, and a great community, you can't go wrong!

This article leaves out one of the better free photo fix it apps which also serves as a photo organizer...Google's Picasa2...I don't mean to tout Google for those who don't like them...personally I'm a Yahoo! fan myself...but Picasa2 is pretty, easy to use and fully functional.

I have been using Picasa2 and find it real easy to use for a beginner

Picasa2 users, can you tell me if the user is given the choice of saving both the original photo and the edited version? Thanks.

Love Picasa. It's easy to use and well designed, but one thing that I wish they'd add is the ability to resize pictures with the option of specifying length and width. There is a resize option under Export Pictures, but that's clunky.

I've been using PICASA and it is very user-friendly for those of us who don't have a clue about editing pics. PICASA made it easy to go from "ignorant" to "knowledgeable" in the editing of pics field and they also give you storage on the WEB so that you can invite friends to go and visit and view your pics. PICASA is also a free download.

Irfanview, Irfanview, Irfanview, that is all I read about!!! What is so great about that, besides its free!!! Dig in the pockets and buy Adobe and get it done and over with, it puts Irfanview, and the others to shame!!! FastStone is pretty cool, but basic as well then. For only $79 you can get one awesome program; Adobe 6.0 Photoshop Elements, and if I can figure out how to use it, then anyone can!!! It is always super cool for making your own awesome slideshows too!!! Dig Deep people, to heck with Irfanview, I used it for a year and stuff because I didnt know any better, and it was advertised on myspace to shrink your photos at one time, now it doesnt even matter. So; If you want an image editor for free, get the GIMP!!! Its almost like Adobe, or come up with $79 and buy Elements and you will have it along with updates forever!!! They store your license key online as well too for ya and even offer you training. But 6.0 Elements has a built in trainer. It walks you thru things then.

Take Care
Irfanview, LOL!!!

Happy 08

I agree that adobe photoshop is a good program, but is a resource hog. Paint.Net will do most of the things Adobe can. Adobe's Red Eye Removal is a joke. This is where XNView, or PhotoToolkit beat it. If I want to use brushes, Artweaver can do it. It can load Photoshop brushes. If Paint.Net ever handles brushes, Adobe will be dead in the water. I agree Irfanview is a joke, it's interface isn't as nice as XNView, and horrible red eye removal!

Since others are mentioning Picasa, I really should point out Windows Live Photo Gallery. It is an excellent image aggegator, and better than Picasa for basic image editing (Picasa has been stagnant, and is in serious need of an upgrade). Also, you can plug programs (like gimp) into the "Open With" menu that allows you the "suite" feeling of programs like Adobe Elements, but without the expense.

Anyone tried Artweaver. It is a very good picture editor and has some advanced picture editing tools. But the interface requires some learning and it is not for beginners. Picasa is good for basic fixes and has a very easy-to-use interface.
