10 worst downloads of 2007

Pity poor me. Everyone else is out drinking spiked eggnog, full of holiday cheer, and here I am, stuck as the PC Grinch, casting snarks and aspersions upon software that intelligent, dedicated people have spent long, hard hours developing. However, the Download.com users occasionally demand blood, and if I'm the one who must bear the sacrificial knife, so be it.

Before I get to the list, I'll start with a disclaimer: These 10 programs are not the worst software programs in the world. These are simply the 10 programs that I had a major beef with in 2007.

Download.com has a strong set of software policies to which any software titles must adhere in order to be listed on our site. The absolute 10 worst downloads in the world won't be found anywhere near our library.

However, you will find some crappy software titles among the 75,000+ programs on the site. Even worse, a good piece of software can sometimes be devalued by a crappy update. Lastly, there are some software programs that simply shouldn't be. These are programs that run smoothly and perform adequately, yet lack a valid purpose, i.e. solutions to problems that don't exist--the pointless downloads.

If a software program has no value to users, we'll pull it off the Download.com site. If we get user complaints about software, we will investigate, and we can remove titles for poor quality or poor publisher behavior. But if software is "so bad it's good," or if it straddles the fence of mediocrity, we'll leave it up to the Download.com audience to determine its value.

Long disclaimer aside, you can read my picks for worst software of the year in a Download.com slide show devoted to the Top 10 worst downloads of 2007. If you agree or disagree, or have a suggestion of your own for the worst downloads of 2007, tell me about it in the blog comments.

The No. 2 worst download of 2007 was omitted from this list. Perhaps this is because of download.com's association with the software. Version Tracker Pro is a close tie with Windows Vista as the No. 1 worst of 2007. After reading reviews from people who have tried to use the trash, I cannot understand why they still advertise such junk so heavily. Wake up C-net and Download.com!!!

While I'm not saying that DigitWiz will ever grace my laptop, I would like to point out that the collective genius at Blackberry created a range of phones with 'Suretype'. The buttons layout are supposed to be much better for predictive text, but unfortunately give absolutely no clue as to the correct number to dial when looking at a text-represented number. So for all Blackberry users staring blankly at their 7130s (and Pearls), go on, take a look.......

Vista in top 10 worst downloads of 2007? come on!! Sure it has teething problems (like XP did) but to add it to this list is stupid. I have been running Vista for 6 months now, and I'm loving it. I only had 3 problems initially, my Powerware UPS, SB X-Fi and HP Laserjet had driver issues. Vista drivers have since been released for these products, and Vista now works flawlessly. If people would stop whining and take the time look for compatible drivers they wouldn't have such problems. If manufacturers of outdated hardware won't supply driver updates for Vista, then stop whining, stay with XP or treat yourself to some new hardware. If XP works for you, stick with it. But I'm moving forward.

Most people cause their own problems with Vista and just write reviews on what they read or hear without knowing anything other than hearsay although most will claim (Falsely) that they "Have used it" or are "System Administrators" . I loaded Vista on 26 various name PC's in the first few days it was out and so far no problems at all contrary to XP having blue screens and horrible memory leaks, CNET used to be a source of information for me but with there "If its Microsoft it's bad, if it's apple or Firefox its good" policy I use other sources for reliable information.

HAHA! LOL I totally agree Vista is one of the worse downloads. The hairdressing game (number 6) was hilarious! The HeadAche browser is funny too! Thanks for sharing, once again!

Hey Peter, just putting in a few cents, first id like to say yes i do believe Vista should be on the list, though not number 1, its more useful than everything on the list in my opinion. but i am let down alot that when Windows made a new OS, they took a step back and not forward. second, id like to agree 100% about 3-d mailbox, saying that the duty of checking emails should be short as possible. stretching that duty out any, is definately useless. third, the USA Green Card Lottery Simulator is more of a dissapointment for their target audience, it looks like to me your showing them they have no chance in hell of getting a green card that way, lol. and finally i must applaud your no.1 choice in most useless download. i for one have to say that Kevin Federline isnt even famous, nor is he popular, i say he is just known by association, and the last thing i want is to see Kevin Federline is see him on TV much less see him while im surfing the web reading the awsome reviews by the great editors and reviews of Cnet

Well, maybe I'm just a newbie and I just don't know much, but I bought a new Dell 17" laptop with Vista Home Premium and it has been great. Easy to use and navigate,
best system I have had, out of the last 4 laptops, and 4 desktops.
Maybe I'm just numb and dumb.

This review is a perfect- although extreme- example of how utterly horrible cnet has become in the past few years regarding what they're here for, intelligent reviews and articles on software and hardware for electronics. This guy "Peter Butler" and whoever allowed him to publish this on cnet, should have been fired on the spot when someone over there read this. This guy sounds like he put this together because he had to, like an elementary school book report or something. 9 out of 10 of these pieces of software no one cares about, let alone knows about, and on top of it most of them are probably homebrew 1st-attempt apps from new programmers. The only legitimate program he put in this list was Vista, and after that it looks like he just stopped caring (especially since it was the first one on the list). The people that come to this site daily may for the most part be uneducated, ignorant, mindless people that rely on your public's-eye-reliant reviews anyway, but that doesn't mean some people that come here don't have a brain in their heads, and articles like this are frankly insulting to those people. I am disguisted at the reviews here, and this article has single handedly turned me against this site, and I've been coming here for years. The technological world has billions of interesting new technologies and evolutions being developed, and you brainless, opinionless people decide to focus on things like Firefox or completely unknown underground MP3 players. Along with that the reviews on products you give that DO matter are so completely unbacked by anything that I can't even take THOSE seriously. A good example (although I realize my opinion differs from 90% of the publics, which makes for good critics, not idiots like you) may be the Halo series. For #2 and 3 you quietly waited for the public's opinion, which was obviously quite high, and reviewed it based off what they thought. The series was taken so far in a different direction, had so many flaws, and ultimately represented nothing the original was about, and you of all websites could have caught it but instead you agreed with what the normal guy had to say, which is usually very innaccurate and based off peer-pressure. Thank you Cnet, for allowing me to make my favorites that much easier to navigate without your depressing avatar being there to remind me of how low highly-rated websites can go.

I think number one should be Vista because with the other downloads, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what you're going to get but with Vista it has snuck up on so many people. Why should Bill Gates be worth so much when his company produced such a product? Mr. Gates, give up a billion, hire some software people and save some face!

Oh, I also am one of those who ordered a new PC from Dell this summer with XP installed on it.

I found another problem with the "US Green Card Lottery Simulator". It's actually not very hard to get a green card - I mean, when I'm surfing the web, all the banner ads keep saying that I've just won one!
