Mac vs. PC: CNET TV Top 5

by Peter Butler

Now that Mac OS X Leopard has arrived, and Microsoft's Windows Vista slowly gains more acceptance, it's time for another battle of the heavyweight operating systems. Tom Merritt counts down the five biggest differences between Mac and Windows in another edition of CNET TV Top 5.

Sheesh. My expectations were met! I was expecting this to be a waste of time - however, hoping that it would be some sort of genuine comparison. After that video, I think I want to disavow my cnet membership.

I was hoping for something useful as I'm currently in the process of making a pc or mac decision. This video was a waste of my time.

Dude, get a PC. They're a hell of a lot more customizable, and there's more software available for them. Unless you like simplicity. Then I guess you'd wanna get a mac. But if you want more hardware upgrade options for your computer in the future, pc is the way to go, fo sho!

But CNET is owned by Microsoft so what do you expect from a review like this ,thing is no one wants to do an honest review anymore. Windows has bugs and Mac is good but expensive .The things in this review are petty and does not show the real issues.

Thank you very much. I'm never going to get that time back.

It was a somewhat clever spot in a very predictable way. I too was hoping for something more substantial. On the other hand, it did highlight certain quirks that have driven me nuts about both OSs.

Maybe instead focus on the top 5 differences that help with daily productivity?

Whats he talking about? The apple mouse does have two buttons, and the scroll wheel is a third button. I converted from windows 4 months ago. Was a big fan of microsoft. But OS/X is sooo much better!
Mo!

I agree and hey no viruses

As many of the posters have already mentioned, this was a waste of time. If that's all they could come up with they need to be in another line of work. I was hoping to get some good info but was treated to absurd pontificating nonsense.

I thought it was rather funny.
I will add, if people are making a decision on what CNET says about the operating systems, you are crazy. Cnet is an amazing company, but they shouldn't make your decisions for you. At least for me they don't, I get a good idea of what I like and dislike about the product.
Go try using the different operating systems for a few minutes, see if your friends have computers with them, hell, go to best buy and play with their computers.

Wow. Another proudly presented display of Tom Merritt's stupidity. He better start doing something productive before he retires, or he will just be added to the "Official List of Absurdly Neophytic Web Video Hosts".
He has been misinformed while finding his facts, and obviously did not do the first thing that should come to mind when reviewing a product; get the specifications from the manufacturer's web site.
There is either bias or error (or a combination of both) in most of his statements. His first "special key" report was simply off topic, and may only apply to the avid typist who keenly examines the artistic quality of any keyboard he purchases, as to avoid making a horrendous decision, resulting with him or her having to deal with the disturbing sight of a product-centered command button - seeing as Mr. Merrit doesn't appear to like the Windows logo.
Also, the Apple Mighty Mouse actually has left and right click buttons, a clickable scroll ball, and two side buttons. Mr. Merrit, the sum of these is five buttons, not one. Please investigate the features of the products you attempt to review.
The difference between close buttons was not explained in this video, which I believe was supposed to compare the two operating systems. The only statement about this topic is essentially that Tom Merritt has not learned how to operate a window close button yet. The reason the window will not close is simply because the mouse is not being depressed. As a close examination of the screencast shows, the "button down" visual confirmation that appears when an item is clicked is not indicated when the mouse is positioned over the exit button and Tom claims to click it.
The uninstallation procedure was the only mildly appropriate content in this video, although it did seem biased towards Windows for some reason, even though the drag-to-trash operation is easier.
Also, the reason for including Linux distributions is unknown to me, and does not follow suit with the intent of the review.
Finally, the so-called "method of death" apparently refers to the rare scenario of the computer crashing. It must be noted that the "beach ball" does not indicate Mac OS has stopped responding. Rather, a Mac's crash report is a gray screen that simply tells the user to restart. Although the Windows "BSOD" is intimidating, it shows the user more information than does the Mac version, thus enabling a better diagnosis of what went wrong.

Re BSOD:
Exactly WHAT info is showed and which human being is able to decypher this crap? My friend is a rocket scientist and he hasn't a clue... So help me out here.

b. beach ball = windows hourglass, screen of death in mac is gray
c. won't go further b/c video wasn't worth the time, pixels and power juice used, not to mention having to respond to make corrections for this so-called "review"

Aw come on people lighten up ... I thought it was great ... a little levity is called for in the pool at times ...

There is such a thing as taking oneself far too seriously ... No intelligent person is going to make an OS decision based on a video clip (Unless the posters in here are totally devoid and without form - something I do doubt) ... Both of the OS's are just 'Hunky-Dory' for any competent fool ... and as for newbies ... well they will need years to learn how to be as bias as the regular posters who troll/frequent these places ... have a bit of a chuckle and let it go lads & lassies ... life is too short to be so wound-up about such trivia ...

Come on guys, there is no real "better." Windows is better for me, Mac is better for a good friend of mine, and that is that. Stop complaining about how this was a waste of time.
He did touch on one productivity thing in the video. How can I be productive if my window doesn't close? Hmmm?

But CNET is owned by Microsoft so what do you expect from a review like this So that means the nit picking contues and the thing is its false how many times did your windows operating system freeze on you at any given time as compared to Mac os . Thing is unless you do'nt use both of them you cant compare and i have used both of them and can compare .The Mac is far better but price point is the main problem .
Other than that GO MAC they are better.

Both Peter and the senior editor should be fired! They have no knowledge at all. The Apple Mighty Mouse has been in market for at least 3 years! Please go to Apple on line store to check how the Apple mouse works, if they don't want to bother to touch the actual product. After all, I think it is rather easy to get in job in cnet. This company has no credibility.

Yet another of Tom's Time Wasters...

Looks like he's more intent on producing weak attempts at humor than producing anything that's actually informative. Sad part is he's not funny, either.
