Killer Download: Speed up your system by cleaning your registry

by Jason Parker

As a frequent downloader of new software, I test and review a ton of programs on my PC at work. But after installing and uninstalling so many programs, it doesn't take long for my registry to become a complete mess, which causes errors, sluggishness, and sometimes even crashes. The problem is that not all programs uninstall as easily as they install and often registry entries are left to stagnate in your system and may eventually cause problems.

To keep my registry lean and mean, I run a quick scan of registry entries using software designed to root out the garbage left behind by uninstalled programs. These apps check my registry for rogue entries so I can decide whether I want to delete them. Some programs also give me a description of what specific registry entries were once used for, thereby allowing me to decide whether I still need them.

A word of warning: Be extremely careful when deleting files from your registry. Some entries have strange names that you won't be able to identify, but might be necessary to run your favorite program or even your system software. A good rule of thumb might be that you only delete entries that you are sure are related to programs you no longer use. With that said, here are my three favorites for regular registry maintenance.

Advanced Registry Doctor Pro

A well-thought-out interface makes it easy to manage registry issues.

Advanced Registry Doctor Pro offers a nice looking interface and some extra features for managing your registry. With this app you can perform a System and Registry backup in advance to make sure you can always revert to your old registry in case of problems. You have the choice of performing Smart or quick scans, and the quick scans using Advanced Registry Doctor Pro are the fastest of the programs listed here. This one is the most expensive of this group at $24.95.

RegSupreme

RegSupreme won't win any design awards, but it will clean out your registry.

RegSupreme scans your registry keys and then displays a list of errors and leftover entries. At the end, you'll get a dialog displaying current registry performance before you clean. It's important at this point to go through RegSupreme's list of obsolete software just in case the program identified something you still use. You can also use the Custom Fix feature to go through items one by one. RegSupreme is not nearly as pretty as Advanced Registry Doctor, but it costs about half as much at $12.95.

1st Registry Repair

Easy registry backups and quick scans make this app a worthy download.

1st Registry Repair, like the other two programs, does a comprehensive scan of registry entries looking for the files and programs they're associated with. It searches in several areas to fix problems like invalid ActiveX entries, obsolete software, and unused file extensions. This one falls right in the middle of the other two programs as far as interface, but what it lacks in looks it easily makes up for in functionality.

Even if you feel pretty good about the way your PC is running now, I still suggest you pick up one of these apps as a preventative measure. Eventually, every registry needs a good cleaning and these apps do the job nicely. Just remember to be careful. As always, if you have a better registry cleaner, please tell me about it in the comments!

Some good registry cleaners are free
by JonathansToolBar&Grill November 7, 2007 2:44 AM PST
I can understand Download.com's interest in recommending shareware. However, from the user's perspective, free is better. Some popular freeware registry maintainers and optimizers are just as capable as the commercial utilities recommended here. Among the best-known and best-regarded are CCleaner, Advanced Windows Care Personal, Easy Cleaner, and Wise Registry Cleaner. All these and more are available on Download.com.

Many other free utilities specialize in registry editing, backup, or defragmentation. And some all-round PC optimizing suites also include registry maintenance functions, such as the free Glary Utilities.

I hope this is helpful. For more great information on useful free and cheap software and Web sites, visit my utilities blog at http://jonathanstoolbar.blogspot.com !

Tested this fine program against jv16 and the difference was minimal to none. Since it's free, this has become my #1 drive cleaner and registry cleaner.

I've never had a positive experience...
by SJ_Rand November 9, 2007 9:12 AM PST
...with any registry cleaner used after programs have been installed and removed. They all promise to track future program installations and keep the registry clean, but every one I've used to try getting rid of unneeded registry entries present before I installed the cleaner has either been too aggressive, recommending removal of entries I know I need, or too timid, skipping entries for programs removed years ago.

With the worst ones, which were often as highly recommended as any here, I've performed the scan and clean, tried to reboot, and found within minutes that I had to reinstall the pre-scan copy. Net value of zero minus the time I spent using the cleaner.

Have they gotten any better?

I don't know which is the best but I sure would like to know how RegVac stacks up against CCleaner and the three cleaners reviewed here.

What I find completely frustrating is the registry cleaners that "claim to be free", search for Registry Fix and right at the top is Free Registry Fix - the worls only free registry cleaner but hang on, that is a load of rubbish, total rubbish! There is absolutely nothing free about it, zip, zero, nada, nothing. If you want to fix your registry you have to pay for it, so how does that make it the worlds only free registry cleaner. Its deceiving for users and a complete lie.

Why Google still allows it to be even displayed on the website with false advertising such as that I find outrageous. If it was television or print media they would not be allow to deceive or use false advertising yet they seem to get away with it on Search Engines.

If a registry cleaner is free, then it should allow you to fix all the errorrs for free. Most of them only allow you to fix 25 or 50 errors for free before you have to pay for them. However, Advanced Registry Fix gives you 3 full fixes for free, at least its free fix your errors unlike some of the tools.

Make your own mind up, test many and decide on the best and what suits you.

What I find very annoying is that I can't get a decent review from anywhere including CNET @#%#*! THEY ARE ALL ADVERTS DISGUISED AS REVIEWS!!!
Take this page as an example. Who the hell is Jason Parker? Some dimwit who doesn't mind using his real name but doesn't make one typo or syntactic error? I don't think so! And it just so happens that the three he's reviewed are all fair to good depending on the price so that whoever might consider a registry cleaner has the price option they can also consider. GIVE ME A BREAK!

I thought CNET might supply some reasonable review of the most common registry cleaners but they are like all the other sites I've looked at -TOTALLY COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISES that run sponsored and disguised reviews!

IF YOUR REALLY LOOKING FOR AN UNBIASED REVIEW YOU"LL HAVE TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE - just like me! Seeyalater!!!

A registry cleaner is useful if it only cleans safe entries. A registry cleaner is dangerous if it cleans necessary entries from the registry or causes more harm than good.

After testing many registry cleaners and pc cleaning programs....I selected NCleaner.

nCleaner contains an advanced system and application cleaner with over 90 cleaning items available, a Registry Cleaner, a Tweak Manager, an advanced Startup Manager, a Junk Finder, a Free Space Shredder, a System Resource Monitor, a System Adviser, supports logging and statistics as well as advanced Scheduling. And to make it better....NCleaner is FREE. So far NCleaner has provided an effective way of cleaning my registry without problems or headaches.

Another good program ,especially for newbies - I recommend Registry First Aid. Registry First Aid identifies which registry entries are SAFE to remove and which entries should be removed with CAUTION. I usually trust Registry First Aid to protect registry entries that should not be touched...and it has been effective so far.
