Get serious with Internet Security 2008

As Trend Micro releases an upgrade to their PC-Cillin Web security product, they've renamed it Internet Security 2008.

It's a bit less glib and reflects the way in which malware attacks have proven to have serious, life-altering consequences in the real world. CNET's Rob Vamosi has given the trialware five stars, and it's hard to argue that Trend Micro doesn't offer a comprehensive suite of tools to keep you safe.

However, user complaints about previous versions indicate mixed reviews. Some loved PC-Cillin, others felt that the cure was worse than the disease. Take a look at the product yourself and let us know what you think in TalkBack below or in our newly revamped forums.

Seth peers into the deep, dark corners of software so that you don't have to. He has yet to suffer a single nightmare about OS/2. You can follow him on Twitter.

So Far......I like it
by Smoaky October 7, 2007 11:11 AM PDT
As an avid tester of new and established software security programs, Trend Micro has impressed me.
Install was quick and painless and helpful prompts talk you thru any additional set-up options. Default settings are sufficient for my needs and upon first boot-up after install I was up and running a protected. Even people new to security apps should have no problem using this right away .Haven't been bombarded with constant pop-ups asking for certain program permission to run. Trend Micro automatically scanned my PC and recognized all safe installed programs and set-up rules accordingly.
Several popular Security Suites firewalls however, do this constantly until they "learn" your allowed programs that you run daily. Although necessary, this can be quite confusing and perhaps an annoyance to the noob.
If you want to dig deep into all the customizable setting you will need to do a little clicking and experimenting with the
easy to use and well laid out main console.
Overall I rate this Security program 4 stars out of 5. Would have given it 5 out of 5 except for the fact that this program is not as user friendly as my top pick for ease of set-up and use which is Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite.

I'd give this software a FIVE!

I use Windows Vista Home Premium, and I purchased Trend Micro's 2007
about a month ago, they allowed me to download the fully funtional version
of the Security program 2008 version. The 2008 version contains a version of
their spam protection that will work with Vista, the 2007 version will only
work with XP, maybe 2000 not sure didn't look for that so see for yourselfs.

This 2008 version found a lot more spyware than may other software
security suite's that I have ran on this computer. Our local news channel done
a report on the top 25 rated software's by comsumer reports and Trend
Micro's was the top rated and that's what sparked my attention to it. This
program is fast/thorough/and does the job in my opinion better than all the
rest..

Trouble with Upgrade
by nighthawk October 8, 2007 9:52 PM PDT
Downloaded just fine, but try using the upgrade button?? Hours working at it. Unable to upgrade as it said was not the primary computer. After numerous e-mails between self and retail trend staff got it installed this am. I did have to delete key in registry and then put in the new key they had sent me when it program installation asked for it. Also Trend does not like AVG and Spyware Blaster.Program actually asks permission to uninstall both programs, before continuing.Have used Trend products since 2005 and first time I have had trouble. Prompt service with complaints which was a plus. Norton for 1 yr almost drove me nuts.

Trend Micro 2008 extremly intrusive!
by cprdan October 9, 2007 4:27 AM PDT
I got rid of Norton because they took much to much control of my computers and I just might do the same with Trend Micro Internet Security Pro when my subscription runs out. I understand, and tolerate, a certain lavel of intrusion from any virus sweet but the instalation of this new updated product has me seeing red.
In order to install it I had to allow it to remove Spybot,Ad-Aware, Spy Sweeper and it even took the Outlook 2003 shortcut from my desktop. I tried to install it without removeing those other products but it stopped installing itself until I let it do it's thing. I understand there are compatability issues between some security programs but from my standpoint this is just a way to get rid of the compatition. Trend Micro has crossed the line that Microsoft was accused of crossing and I am angry.

Tired of intrusive Security Suites???
by Smoaky October 9, 2007 6:46 PM PDT
Try Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite.
Non-intrusive,user friendly and easy to set rules and adjust settings. And does not bog down my P-4 2.2Ghz test system as other users have complained about.
I keep trying other Security Suites such as Trend Micro,Norton,Kaspersky but I always seem to come back to Zone Alarm.
If it ain't broke don't fix it huh?
fruit or vegtable?
by UCantBeSerious October 13, 2007 2:42 AM PDT
I have used many anti virus programs but never ever have I been able to describe how one tastes & whether not I am willing to tolerate an "intrusion" based on this taste. I see cpldan stated in his comment & I quote " I understand, and tolerate, a certain lavel of intrusion from any virus sweet but the instalation of this new updated product has me seeing red".....Was is the sweetness of this anti-virus SUITE that made you see red cpldan or was it sour with a hint of salt? Sort of like Salt & Vinegar potato chips? Lmao....

Well this is a first! Well, I just have one question for ya cpldan? Is this "sweet" a fruit or a vegtable?

Warm Regards-

It's Good! But you'll always need more!!!
by lm140 October 14, 2007 1:30 PM PDT
When a product solves the problem or keeps you from having a problem in the first place, it'll always get great reviews. This is a good product, just like Norton, McAfee's and the others. But, as I've been seeing through the last couple of decades, you CAN'T rely on just one. You'll always need more to assist it. This is a war we're fighting against malware, viruses, trojans, rootkits and all the rest. Be prepared with more than just Norton or Trend's products alone. Even using Spysweeper, SpyDoctor or Spybot isn't enough to eradicate it all. I've had to use as many as a dozen different products to get to it all as I've always felt there was more to be found if the major players found most of it.
