Killer Download: Block potential threats with a solid firewall program

A couple of weeks ago, I gave you some of the top antivirus apps for your PC. The programs I listed were my picks for reliable free and shareware antivirus software that you could use right away.

Though having a good virus program is crucial to online safety, it's not enough to stop all intruders. Another extremely important line of defense is the software firewall. Some believe you need a hardware firewall (like as a function of your router, for example) to keep all intruders away from your system. But for most people (me included), a good software firewall offers plenty of protection against attacks and also against software on your hard drive that might be trying to contact "the mother ship" without your knowledge.

Like the antivirus programs I mentioned in the last article, software firewalls usually have a limited free version that works perfectly well on its own. If you want the extra features offered by the paid version like e-mail scanners, chat client security, pop-up blockers--in most cases--you'll have to pay for the full version. I've found that most of the extras are obtainable elsewhere for free. The bottom line is, having the free version of a firewall program and the added line of defense it provides is much better than having nothing at all. I strongly recommend that everyone that doesn't have a firewall at least get one of these software firewalls on their machine for the protection they give.

ZoneAlarm

Use ZoneAlarm's firewall preference pane to set your level of security

ZoneAlarm is one of the more well-known firewall programs, and it's the one I run at home. It installs easily and alerts you via a pop-up window the second anyone tries to access your connection?in or out. This way, you'll be able to designate safe apps and stop the ones that look questionable. A paid version of ZoneAlarm offers more options, but the free version is enough for basic security.

NetVeda Safety.Net

The Safety.Net interface isn't fancy, but the level of protection is what's important

NetVeda Safety.Net is another solid firewall program which provides protection similar to ZoneAlarm. Like ZoneAlarm, this app lets you designate safe apps and keeps a close eye on what's trying to sneak through. My one problem with Safety Net is that some of the notifications can be pretty confusing unless you really know your stuff. This one might be geared more toward advanced users for that reason. You'll also have the ability to set parental controls with this app.

Comodo Firewall Pro

Click on each of the Security Monitors to set your safety levels as high as possible

Comodo Firewall Pro is a recent discovery for me, but this pro version (with all the bells and whistles) is free for life. I like how this program analyzes regular application use to detect suspicious activity immediately. The smooth blue interface is easy to understand and each security alert comes with advice on how to proceed. Make sure to check out the developer's site (linked off of the CNET Download.com Comodo Firewall Pro product page) for tests you can use to check your own firewall for leaks before downloading this program.

The free version of each of these firewall programs offers plenty of protection for most users. If you don't already have a firewall through a business network or at home, I strongly suggest you download one of the programs above. If you've got a better firewall program, let me know in the comments!

Go with comodo
by Jmack16 October 2, 2007 7:59 PM PDT
In my opinion comodo is a better firewall than zonealarm. I've used both but zonealarm gave me a lot of problems connecting to the internet wirelessly on two different computers. Comodo is more customizable but I think computer illiterate people might prefer zonealarm. I've never used the second firewall mentioned in this article though. I'll try downloading it one of these days

I've been using it for over a year now, and it hasn't let me down once. Although it is a pain to start with (as it blocks everything and you need to keep your mouse on the 'allow' button) it's the most secure firewall I've seen.

There's a traffic monitor to show you exactly what's going on,
and best of all it's FREE!
Leak tests

I don't know how trustful it is, but there is a site that compares all popular firewalls and their level of protection. They say that Comodo is the best... Here is a link to test results: <a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.matousec.com/projects/windows-personal-firewall-analysis/leak-tests-results.php" target="_newWindow">http://www.matousec.com/projects/windows-personal-firewall-analysis/leak-tests-results.php</a>

Happily switched to Comodo from ZA
by UKposter October 3, 2007 2:00 AM PDT
I baulked at the huge d/l size of the newest version of ZA several months ago, the bloat included in the free version is no use unless you have the Pro version. I looked at other choices and thanks to comments posted on cnet/download.com I was influenced to try out Comodo. I'd used ZA happily for years beforehand but had noticed how much bigger it got everytime there was a major update. Comodo is usually light on resources, but occassionally it's cpf.exe and cmdagent.exe components eat up a lot of cpu, but these periods don't last very long on my XP Pro set up. I'd rather have a firewall that works, then one that sits around doing little for most of the time.

As pointed out here it does have a lot of alerts at first, but then it needs to learn what you want to open/access the net. These reduce as time passes. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a good all round firewall which allows the user good control of it.

Comodo make other good security software, check their website, and no, I don't work for them.

Will Try COMODO from ZoneAlarm
by DomoHan October 3, 2007 3:13 PM PDT
Very informative blog. It's given me the opportunity to try a different and seemly better Firewall. If matousec.com leak-test results are accurate I would highly recommend removing NetVeda Safety.Net from your list as it doesn't help the overall Internet community by installing poor performing Firewalls. One less vulnerable system is one less spam out there.

Comodo all the way!
by acr45 October 3, 2007 7:31 PM PDT
Comodo is easily the best free firewall right now and possibly in the near and far future. (NOT AN OPINION, IT'S A FACT. Yeah it's free and it is 10 times and better as ANY pay-for firewall on the market.

Here's proof if you're still not convinced.

Vista x64 issues
by Jmack16 October 4, 2007 7:29 PM PDT
Well guys yesterday I upgraded my windows xp laptop to windows vista ultimage x64 and to my surprise all of devices were working. So i started installing software and of course i tried for comodo but the darn thing wasnt compatible with vista. actually im not sure if its because im running vista or a 64 bit OS. At first it wouldnt install and then a message came up asking if it should try reinstalling it with setting that would make it work and it was able to install. the problem was that all of my shields were off. So i uninstalled comodo and tried for zonealarm. after i downloaded and ran the installation file, it clearly stated that the vista edition of zonealarm isnt x64 compatible. The same thing with other firewalls and spysweeper. Im using the default windows firewall and im very irritated. but theres good news. A new version of comodo is comming out thats both vista and x64 compatible so i still have hope. but for now i cant find one firewall that workds here.

Um...Hardware people?
by tekwiz4u October 4, 2007 8:02 PM PDT
Just go and spend 30 bucks on a router (Dlink, Linksys) and you wont have to worry about the apps hogging system resources. Dont have a software firewall installed, but XP already has one built in that does the basic job of these 3rd party apps. And it's already FREE!!!

Windows Firewall
by hyper viper October 5, 2007 8:10 AM PDT
well not meaning to be a wise ass or nothing ......but windows firewall, hell!!!, might as well have nothing so i have been told......at least the one in XP.......don't know what vista's firewall is like.....it is at least two way........HYPERVIPER
Yeah....... About that XP firewall.......
by ArmoredCavalry October 24, 2007 12:06 PM PDT
Windows XP firewall does not block outgoing connections...

If you think that a router/XP firewall is all the security you need, I have a feeling you are in for some rough times ahead....
Essential computer safety is way too complicated
by JohnStreet65 October 7, 2007 5:11 PM PDT
Basic system security is way too complicated .... Firewall and Malware (virus) protection should be a one product package with updates to solve evolving systems.

The huge $ market in protection is probably split up amoungst way too many indians so no single company can offer a one stop solution.... ie resources to address new threats.

The security industry uses scare communications to fleece easy $ from Mom&#38;Pop consumers. There seems to be a lot of bulldust in the industry

To add further anguish, the big Firewall and Malware programs get more attention from hackers...
