Auslogics Disk Defrag: First Look

Easy & convenient

Interesting program, but...
by G-Skaf September 19, 2007 12:44 PM PDT: it does not take into account the Layout.ini file created by Windows XP. This file describes how files should be arranged for faster system bootup and application launch. Windows' built-in defragmenter arranges files according to this file, as do newer versions of O&O defrag and other programs. Auslogics disk defrag does not. This may actually result in slower bootups and application launches. My advice: Let Windows XP' and Vista's prefetchers do their job (on XP, boot files are defragmented every 3 days when the PC is idle), or just run the "defrag C: -b" command if you believe a defrag is necessary. I don't know why this program comes up so often here on Download.com and the editors don't seem to mention the tiny, but important fact about the Layout.ini file.; Like this Reply to this comment

not so happy
by moosest September 19, 2007 2:51 PM PDT: Used this program as it was highly recommended by c-net. Before defraging I would call up vol:f: and play music NOW, after defraging I have to wait at least 1/2 hour to access vol:f:.
The program gave it's self top marks for the job it did, and informed me my vol:f: is now 22% more efficient.
Are we not to use defraggers on music storage, if so I must have missed the warning.; Like this Reply to this comment

Great Prgram!

And someone had said that this messes up the layout.ini i have never had this problem but i also used TuneXP which is the best free tweak for XP(it has a feature that arranges your boot files for faster laoding); Like this Reply to this comment

Using this program you might actually be undoing some of the work that the operating system has done (Windows XP optimises boot files every 3 days, I don't know about Vista though). However, it's really to use on separate data partitions with huge files, because it simply defragments files and does not consolidate free space. This is what makes Windows' built-in defragmenter take so long to finish.; Like this Reply to this comment

Used it, looks beautiful, didn't do much ...
by billped September 22, 2007 12:53 PM PDT: I have used this app a few times and it seemed like it was fantastic, but it never actually reduced my defragmentation level. When I run this and then run the MS version (or run Auslogics twice), I am still left with a significant amount of defrag.

When the MS version finished, both systems show the defrag level down to where it should be.

I am a longtime windows geek, so the likelihood of a stupid user error is low (though never zero!); Like this Reply to this comment

But now I use IObit SmartDefrag ( http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html) to substitute for it not only because IObit SmartDefrag can defrag several partitions at a time, but also it'll work automatically and quietly in the background on my computer. I have used others and they have removed my taskbar completely from the system. I use Disk Defrag daily to keep my computer running smooth as "glass". Because I test all new software that interests me, I chose to use "Defraggler" from the makers of "CCleaner" and it doesn't do half the job of Auslogics. I would highly recommend these products to everyone who likes to have a computer that runs quickly & smoothly.
