Uploading and downloading Web photos

by Peter Butler
(Credit: CNET Networks)

The number and quality of online photo-sharing sites, along with their burgeoning communities, have been growing exponentially ever since mainstream consumers embraced digital photography.

Flickr, Picasa, Snapfish, 23HQ, Zoomr, and Webshots (disclaimer: Webshots is owned by CNET Networks) are only a handful of the free sites that let you publish your own pics and explore other photographers' creations.

Once you've established your digital presence on a photo-sharing site, you may find yourself uploading hundreds, if not thousands, of photos to share with friends and family. While the sites have powerful technology to display, categorize, and host your images, they're not designed for batch uploading and downloading; that's where third-party plug-ins and add-ons can come in handy.

Yesterday, I took a look at Migratr, a free tool created by Alexander Lucas that can download all of your images from one site and then automatically upload them to another.

What do you use to upload and download photos from your favorite online-photo site? And what's your favorite photo-sharing Web site? Tell me about it in the comments.

I use shutterfly and PhotoBucket
by jonjoslin July 31, 2007 12:18 PM PDT
I use shutterfly and PhotoBucket.

both serve me well, and Photobucket looks liek their beta uploader is coming along.

I tthink there is room out there for a SYNC function to these sites.. Don't make me upload, just sync (preferably behind the scenes) all pictures in a given folder structure, including the sub-folders and sub-sub-folders etc!

Something like \pictures\2007\Jon Rocks in Belize\Day 2

etc.

My choice - Webshots
by Beader7 July 31, 2007 12:23 PM PDT
I have used Webshots for a long time. I really like how wasy it is to share your albums with others. You can share your albums and the person does not have to sign up or sign in to view. Its really easy to download pictures also. I have tried the others, but I always return to Webshots. I reallt appreciate the fact that "free" members have an increased number of pictures they can post now. If the number was "unlimited" I would be a paying member once again. Its also a great community and I have made friends there that I share pictures with all the time.

by hshojaee July 31, 2007 12:46 PM PDT
Batch uploading of photos is super easy with PhtoDrop.com's DropZone tool. They automatically create a thumbnail page and a slideshow preview and organize uploaded photos in albums without any extra work.

Webshots Photos
by smokeyjoe7 July 31, 2007 12:46 PM PDT
I have used Webshots for a long time. However, I am reluctant to put my better photos on because of copyright restrictions. I don't mind people viewing, but I don't want them copied.

Favorite photosharing?
by roseman127 July 31, 2007 1:10 PM PDT
I like several photosharing sites:

Webshots for just plain uploading lots of famuily photos for friends and others to see.

Photobucket for hosting my photos to blog about or send to others.

Flickr for serious photography and cameraholics.

when we get into video, there are a couple of other sites, but this topic was photos.

flickr and flock
by J5uliana July 31, 2007 1:14 PM PDT
I use only Flickr for photos. I use the browser Flock. Flock has a bulk photo downloader for Flickr. I can give the photos each a name, a description, & privacy level. At this time all the photos must be uploaded to the same set of photos. You can have photos displayed across the top of Flock or not. Your choice. It works great for me!

All I want . . . .
by jwlaurie July 31, 2007 2:21 PM PDT
All I want is a simple, free and straightforward program that will allow me to share .avi and .mov video files created by my Canon digital camera or my wife's Kodak camera. Nothing else, no organizing, sharing, cataloguing, categorizing or what ever, just something that will let me send Grandma some short movies of her great grand children by PC.

Any suggestions?

K.I.S.S.

Use Pando to send the movies... it is free and allows you to send up to 1 gig files... the send includes instruction for the recipient to get the program

Use The Best of the Best
by jbmc98 July 31, 2007 2:52 PM PDT
When it comes to Web-Photos, there are several different companies you can use. Flickr, Picasa, Webshots, Shutterfly, MaterPhotos USA, & Smugmug. I use all of these but out of all of them I use Picasa & Smugmug the most.
BUT---out of all of these listed, SMUGMUG is the best. All can do photos for you, but what makes Smugmug different from the others is SERVICE. All of these companies give great quality photos, if you took the photo right. But its when you have a problem with the upload or order -- THAT is when you see a differece --- you want a company you can send a fast email to & hope for a reply to help you normallly in 2 or 3 days. With Smugmug, the reply has ALWAYS BEEN less than 24 hours, many times 12 hours or less & for me, service is a big factor. Hopefully Migratr will work well because then I can uplaod a lot of photos at once which will save a lot of time. If you haven't tried these, try them. All are different. All have good pointers. Some are easier than the other. Compare & use it to fit your needs. If you are a pro -- Smugmug, Shutterfly, & MasterPhoto USA are good sites. But overall, Smugmug service is the best hands down.

I like shutterfly so far the best
by glycogirl July 31, 2007 4:31 PM PDT
I just happened to make a photo book for my family on Shutterfly last night and put the link below to give you an idea. The quality of the photo books are beautiful as I have done a few now and have a goal of scanning in my old photos and making them all into photo books. It is great to have photos online and I have thousands, but having a place where you can do beautiful things with them is also important.
Great new upgrades to free photo software in the Shutterfly studio for editting like brightness contrast and red eye--even teeth whitening/cropping, and very simple to use.
If interested photos from my daughter's grad from Univ and a cruise.

Thanks Cindy
PS I am interested in finding a program to send small video clips that both of my new cameras take.

Downloading pictures
by drafzaal July 31, 2007 10:22 PM PDT
Whew! After a long time you realized the problem your customers face. I am a premier member and whenever I send pictures to someone, it is a painful task for them to 'click' + 'Full size' + right-click + save as then go back and do it again and so on for EVERY picture. Very time consuming. As a result nobody downloads my pictures. It is too painful. I had the opportunity to use Picassa and was very pleased. Open the picture, right-click and save. Extremely fast. Your site opens big thumbnails which are useless for downloading. Either let the full picture open or give the option for dowloading the full album in one go.

Picasa WebAlbums fantastic
by Graham Marsden July 31, 2007 10:41 PM PDT
Picasa WebAlbums is my favourite for one main reason. As a keen blogger any photo I use in the blog is automatically stored for me by WebAlbums in a dedicated album. As far as I am aware none of the other sharing-sites offer this facility?

Picasa and all the others!
by mrlemarquis August 1, 2007 12:22 AM PDT
Hello! I use mainly Picasa, because frankly I find "Google" things relatively reliable.I received (with a new Digital camera) a photo programme which was installed automatically when installing the drivers.Problem was that this programme contained blatant spyware, adware, and goodness knows what else!It also raised the size of the image, 450kb's, to an enormous 2.8MB's whenever I changed ANYTHING (like light/contrast etc. The programme also took 122MB's of disc space! It very quickly came off my PC, and my spyware controller took care of the spy/ad stuff!
Picasa,Webshots,Flickr (although the last named is not as good since Yahoo's intervention)are all very valuable sites, and work very well, for me at least!
Google broadsheets/documents is also one I use often to publish to the Web or my Blogs, particularly images, but you have to watch out that the size of the image transmitted is edited by the size editor on the photo upload page, otherwise half of the photo is missing on the blog!
Incidentally, I tried to download your latest tip "migratr" but gave up after being confronted with a Microsoft page demanding that I download .NET Passport, taking up much more space than the actual programme! I shall try again on Mozilla!
Your site is always interesting, and anything you have in suggestion form for uploading and publishing Video files to the web would also be appreciated! Google Video doesn't want to know (for example) anything about " Microsoft Movie Maker" files - War of the Browsers, maybe!

Web Photo's
by killeatonboy August 1, 2007 2:10 AM PDT
I use Webshots I have tried others but not with the same ease of use as Webshots. I'll take a look at Migratr and try it out. Had to point out the ease of use of Webshots to my sharing friends in Australia, who used a well known site beginning K they have now migrated to Webshots
