Scan your programs for security updates with Secunia PSI

Earlier this week, security company Secunia released a beta version of a new, free tool that scans all of your installed applications and analyzes their security patch statuses. The Secunia Personal Software Inspector evaluates all of the installed programs on your computer and compares them to a list of over 4,200 software programs.

After the scan is complete, Secunia PSI will categorize each program as "Up-To-Date" (everything is OK), "Insecure" (you've got an outdated version), or "End-of-Life" (your version is no longer supported). The results table presents the name and version number of your install app; each--when clicked--takes you to a page that gives more information about that program.

There are two possible buttons, blue and green, that may be listed to the right of each software application in your list. If software is marked as Insecure or End-of-Life, a blue button will link directly to the file that will update your application, if available. The green button is an informational button that seems to link to the same page as the software title or version number.

Although the Secunia Personal Software Inspector is in beta release, there are a few annoyances worth noting. For one, all of the links that Secunia provides open in Internet Explorer, regardless of your default browser setting. That's particularly annoying, considering that most of the browser-based links are downloads, and Internet Explorer doesn't include a native download manager.

Also, I noticed that the Secunia application database may not be completely up to date. Secunia Personal Software Inspector correctly identified my version of iTunes as 7.2.0.34, but it also told me it was up-to-date, although the most recent version of iTunes is 7.3.1. I might understand if Secunia was concerned with security patches only, but if that's the case, that fact should be made more clear on the informational pages.

Despite the possible flaws, I very much like the notion of a lightweight monitoring tool. Now if only it will tell me when Secunia Personal Software Inspector updates to a full 1.0 version.

Doesn't Work!
by monkeyman1953 July 27, 2007 6:36 PM PDT
Tried to use this but didn't work (I have Vista Ultimate 64 Bit). Kept freezing up and freezing all programs. Uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times. Same thing each time.

Doesn't support Vista
Vista isn't yet supported

You need to look more closely at system requirements -- Vista isn't supported, yet.

On the Secunia website, I believe they state that the next release will support Vista

Great program and does what it says

Recently I discovered Secunia Personal Software Inspector Beta myself as well and I downloaded it to see if it works.

And indeed it does.

It's good to have a program that monitors your software and tells you when you need to update your programs or when there is a newer version available.

I really like Secunia Personal Software Inspector Beta.

Fails to initialize

What are the system requirements? I am running XP-SP2. I have the latest update.microsoft.com software. I can access https:
secunia.com. I have tried adjusting my IE settings, services and security software. I have repaired, un-installed, re-downloaded and re-installed....but it always tells me that it failed to initialize.

System requirements are available...
by darkdestiny7 July 30, 2007 6:40 AM PDT
Supported Operating Systems:
* Microsoft Windows XP - Service Pack 2
* Microsoft Windows 2003
* Microsoft Windows 2000 - Service Pack 4
* US and European languages only

Privileges:
* To install and run the Secunia PSI you will need administrative privileges

Connectivity:
* Access to Secunia servers (encrypted) via SSL (https://psi.secunia.com:443/)
* Access to Microsoft Windows Update servers, see also WUA requirements below

Software Requirements:
* Latest version of Microsoft Windows Update Agent (WUA)

That's all for the requirements as shown in the site itself. So Windows Vista Ultimate is not supported.

I trust the Online Software Inspector it provided, and want very much to get this program. But I would prefer waiting a while till the full version is released. All the best to Secunia!

Glad its only a Beta, hope they add more
by skiracer712 July 31, 2007 7:04 AM PDT
In all reality this is a good idea, but needs more. Instead of just checking to make sure your version is "secure", it should also inform you of new updates available for your programs, even if you version is safe. As said in the original article, I had a similar issue with itunes, except my version of itunes is much older, but its "secure." I see no real point for this program if you keep up-to-date on updating your software.

Another improvement they need is a update manager (after adding a general update check for your software) where you could check/uncheck updates in a window and have it download and apply them.

Secunia Problems.
by smart1960 July 31, 2007 10:58 AM PDT
Downloaded program and waited for install and nothing happend? I just got left with a blank screen at the end of the day. I tried about three times to install and no joy.
I am currently running Vista Ultimate, and this program looks like it could be a useful peace of kit to have (Secunia) I am sure when all problems are sorted it will be a decent program.

Screencast on Secunia PSI

Most forms of security software are like border guards. They don't have any concern about good citizens already living inside those borders. A different approach is needed to address application security. Secunia uniquely fills that need.

I wrote a screencast on Secunia PSI here:

Careful - Secunia PSI (Beta) is ill-formed
by j.braden September 26, 2007 9:04 AM PDT
Users should be carefull with the PSI (Beta) version of Secunia. The design of the scan segment is ill formed and will tie up your computer for an extensive amount of time once started. No out except to kill program.
