Convert movies for your iPhone (or iPod)

I'm not sure how you people can watch movies and TV shows on those little screens, but you sure are doing it! Every time I turn around on the bus or in the airport, somebody is watching video on her iPod. (If she's supercool, she's watching it on her new iPhone.)

It's easy to buy videos designed to view on those little screens, of course, but if you want to get your own DVDs and Web movies onto your iPod or iPhone, you'll have to dive into the wide world of video converters.

The first thing you should know is that most commercial DVDs are copyright-protected and to break that copyright protection is a legal violation in many countries, including the U.S. None of the software on CNET Download.com will "crack" encrypted DVDs.

The second thing to know is that iTunes itself is a decent converting tool. Simply select a file from your video list, right-click it, and choose "Convert Selection for iPod" to create an MP4 movie. If you're dealing with Web video or DVDs, however, you'll likely need another conversion tool. Also, in my experience, iTunes conversion is mighty slow.

The iPhone and most video iPods support two basic video formats: MPEG-4 (.mp4 and .m4v) and MOV (QuickTime). The truth is that converting video files is all a matter of managing free codecs, and many programs will accomplish the same goal, but I've found a few interfaces and functionalities that I like.

The most user-friendly tool I've found for ripping a DVD into an MP4 file for the iPod or iPhone is the free Plato DVD to iPod Converter. Simply hit Open, select your DVD location, and hit OK. You'll have an iPod-ready video before you know it.

An excellent bare-bones option for converting video formats is the slightly confusing Kate's Video Converter. It includes everything you need to transform video into MP4 or MOV files, but you may have to experiment a bit to find the codec you need.

CinemaForgeLite

One of the more interesting video converters I've seen recently is CinemaForgeLite, a tool for grabbing Web movies from sites like YouTube and transforming them into iPod-ready video files. A simple wizard walks you through the process, or an advanced interface lets you customize settings like frame size and bit rate. It seems to work best on YouTube and major video-sharing sites.

What do you use to convert movies for your iPod or other portable digital video player? Tell me about it in the comments.

I use CloneDVDmobile for my iPod
by chimpypimpy July 24, 2007 10:42 PM PDT
I like to watch movies on my iPod - thats why I use CloneDVDmobile. I've tried over a dozen of these programs and found this one the easiest and best. Works seamlessly with AnyDVD.

HandBrake for Windows will do this for free but takes some practice and tweaking.

I like MediaCell Video Converter
by ldemido July 25, 2007 10:10 AM PDT
I like MediaCell Video Converter which is very simple front end for codec's that transforms digital video files into an iPod/iPhone-compatible format. It works with most formats I tested such as: AVI, MPEG, VOB, WMV, and RM files. The groundbreaking feature of the program is the encoding speed which is very fast comparing to other software I have tested.

Program to convert video files and dvds to mp4.
by Coach Rebeiro July 25, 2007 11:06 AM PDT
The program that I have used to convert video files is Roxio Easy Media Creator 9. This program costs money, but you can convert all video files including the popular avi. format to mp4. It takes about 30 to an hour, but the results are good, a high quality video (for viewing on a small ipod or iphone screen) that is a small enough size (less than 600 mb).

by MTremblay July 25, 2007 11:25 AM PDT
I have the reverse problem - I have a Camcorder that records in MP4.

How can I convert the MP4 format files into something I can edit, add sound and pictures to, and then turn into a into a decent quality playable DVD?

Pretty happy with Cucusoft DVD to iPod converter.
by MrJodie July 25, 2007 11:25 AM PDT
We bought new laptops for my wife and two daughters several months ago, along with iPods for each member of the family (no, we're not rich... it was a disability settlement, if you must know). Anyway, I went with a recommendation from my brother and downloaded Cucusoft's converter program and have installed it on an XP system and three Vista laptops (2x32-bit compatible and 1x64-bit only) with no problems. It's easy to use, fast (a two hour movie takes about twenty-five minutes to convert) and the quality is very good (some I tried didn't sync audio and video properly). They offer a free trial and the software is about $30. My eleven year old and sixteen year old daughters use it quite a lot, as a matter of fact, to share music videos and movies with their friends. What more can I say?

Don't forget the Neuros OSD
by jborn July 25, 2007 11:41 AM PDT
If you really are serious about daily TV show viewing, daily recording + transcoding + downloading/syncing is not realistic. With a hardware product like the Neuros OSD, you just plug in the iPod, setup a recording, and then unplug your iPod from the OSD on your way to work, and you're good to watch your shows.

Low tech method
by PortVista-19095313035016904102 July 25, 2007 12:23 PM PDT
Just play the video on your computer and take photographs of the computer screen. Next, have the photos developed at a 1-hr photo. Once you've picked up your photos, scan them in using your scanner. Now sync the photos with your iPod and view them really quickly. For sound, just hum some music as your viewing your newly converted video!

You might think this is a really dumb method and does not achieve the goal in question, but so is taking advice from CNET about video conversion. CNET won't tell you how to properly rip anything due to legal restrictions, so you need to take a look at a website that will.

Internet Video Converter
by JazzyJeff502 July 25, 2007 7:41 PM PDT
The name says it all, it allows you to download and then transcode just about any video you pull from the 'net. It's also good for transcoding stuff that's already on your PC. Just about every codec ever heard of is supported. As for downloading facilities, you'd be better off using a 'site scraping' utility i.e. Orbit or HTTP Guide Dog.
