When RealPlayer launched back in 1995, it was mostly used to provide consumers with streaming audio and video content without giving them a local copy. Its feature set has grown considerably in recent years, but it's still surprising to see a new RealPlayer 11 beta version that lets users record YouTube videos and Internet radio directly to their hard drives.

Recording streaming media is nothing new, of course. Open-source app Streamripper32 has been letting users record Shoutcast radio for many years, and my favorite audio player, Quintessential Player, can automatically record nearly any audio stream.

Extensions for Mozilla Firefox like Ook Video Ook allow you to save any embedded content in a Web page, including YouTube videos and MySpace audio streams, whereas VideoDownloader focuses more on simply downloading all online videos.

RealPlayer's emergence into the stream-ripping genre is a definite validation of the concept, though the legal issues around the topic seem far from settled.

What do you use to download streaming audio and video locally? Tell me about it in the comments.

FlashGet: a free program which can:
-rip flash streams like 610WIP.com's radio stream (610WIP = Philadelphia based sports station with live flash stream)
-download certain types of streaming ASF and WMV content that is stored on a remote server
-rip live windows media streams
-works in ripping certain ASX streams

FlashGet also comes with a flash monitor addon. When you hover over flash content, a little flashget box pops up. If you click the box, FlashGet will start a download for the content without you having to obtain any links.

HiDownload:
Does everything that FlashGet does, but covers those other ASX streams, and ASF/WMV content that FlashGet can't handle. I dont like the interface as much as FlashGet, so I only use HiDownload for those items FlashGet can't handle.

FreeDownloadManager:
It works to download certain WMV content that FlashGet and HiDownload can't handle.

The Best Ripper

I've used most but when Realplayer 11 came out, it is like the " Bomb ". It downloads from just about anywhere, faster, easier & better quality. I was on the pc for hours after it 1st came out because not only does it download flash videos, it has a library where you can manage & watch them. Which means you really don't need to convert all those Flash files anymore. It is definitely going to change the landscape because what are the other big wigs going to do, just sit back & watch? Right now, there's simply is no comparison to the Realplayer 11 which baffles me about Cnet.
You guys had nothing on it. You guys have been falling behind in alot lately. I use to get updates as soon as they
came out. Now I get updated before I get the notice from Cnet 4 or 5 days later & sometimes a week....

I use vixy.net
by kenboy127 July 10, 2007 12:10 PM PDT
vixy.net is a youtube ripper, but the cool thing is that it also converts the file to many formats of your choice. for me i convert things to mp4 for my ipod, and vixy.net does it automatically. its the best youtube ripper. the only downside is that it will only work for youtube, no other streaming sites. for other sites i started using realplayer 11 and then converting the file with WM converter.

Free HiQ recorder from Roemer software has always worked for me to record streaming audio. Personalized service from Mr. Roemer is a definite plus. A deluxe shareware version called Easy HiQ Recorder is available. But, the free version is LOADED with features....all I needed. JB says CHECK IT OUT!!

Firefox extension that works great for almost all video content that's out there and has a list of all the sites it has been proven to work with and keeps a hidden list of those "other" video sites it works with too. I've used others and htis one seems to be the best. Can't hurt to try for those Firefox users...who should be just about everyone!

Since you've asked, here goes:

Audacity and
Wavosaur.

Now I have to confess something. Both are not user's friendly.

Total Recorder PRO is what I use
by fredathome July 10, 2007 1:20 PM PDT
Total Recorder PRO, $36 from http://www.highcriteria.com/, is an easy download. The PRO allows a great variety of editing. The regular Total Recorder, $17.95, does not have sophisticated editing features. A free trial is available, but does not capture enough to keep the files.

Ringtones...
by tjmaxxxx July 10, 2007 1:21 PM PDT
I use Focus mp3 recorder to rip any sound I want from my computer, whether it's a DVD playing, or something from Youtube, or whatever....usually when I do that, I'm gonna use it to make Ringtones with my Motorola Phone Tools software. The Motorola software allows you to make ringtones of ANY sound clip that you can put on your computer, or in a cd/dvd drive.

The Focus software has no noticeable (if any) loss of sound quality.

Video Downloading
by knight38 July 10, 2007 1:25 PM PDT
I use VDownloader, a freeware program from www.enriquepuertas.com. All I have to do is copy and paste the URL for the video into its address box, hit the Download button, and the program downloads and then automatically converts the video to standard format.

Not very many FLV rippers work properly
by Atomb0mb July 10, 2007 1:27 PM PDT
All the rippers I've tried that say things like "this one will really grab any FLV (flash video) file" have ended up doing nothing. So I resort to packet sniffing to get the url of the video then just downloading it in firefox and saving it to the hard drive. After that I can edit or convert or whatever I need to do.

I'll have to check out some of these apps mentioned here. They sound like they work well.

I share your sentiments. A lot of s/w downloading and alot of disappointment with 'promised' capabilities that don't produce. Would you please follow-up with your initial post here and submit anything you find that actually delivers what it promises. I would respect you findings. Thanks. David

by rudster2005 July 10, 2007 2:00 PM PDT
It really is a move in the right direction but when you have some of these softare programs like Windows media center where it can actually over power realplayer and windows 10 and basically make itself the default music player if your other profgrams don,t kick on right away/media center taked my dvd,s right over and plays them well so I don,t mind.I can use what i want but software can do thins on there own, of coparse it was programed but it,s unreal to imagine what it takes to do that?

Save YouTube videos straight to your hard drive!!!
---------------------------------------------------
Its so EASY too!

Download this Awesome!!! script written by Ricardo Garcia
Gonzalez
youtube-dl From:

Installation Instructions ...
-------------------------------------------------
How To Capture YouTube Videos
-------------------------------------------------
(For CLI junkies .... ;-)

1 - login as root
2 - From Bash save the above script to /usr/bin/
3 - Change permissions on the file to be fully executable
4 - cd to /usr/bin [as user]
5 - Type youtube-dl youtube-dl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxWlXPLkGXI
[or whatever the path is to the YouTube video]

Whala!!! you done!

Tip: You can even specify the output path to any directory
by using -o [path]/[yourfilename].flv

Tip: I can play .flv's straight in smplayer, but your
video player may not support flash video so ...
You can convert flv files to avi using the following
OpenSource program: ffmpeg
You can Downlad it free from the packman repository
Bash command: ffmpeg -i my_flash_video.flv
the_avi_file.avi

"Thank You Ricardo!"
"You da Bomb!"

YouTube downloader for Dial-Up
by bwh48 July 10, 2007 3:02 PM PDT
Peter, I only have a 26.4 kps dial-up internet connection.
Broadband is not yet available [nor scheduled] for this rural area. Therefore, live streaming is very 'jerky' w/many starts & stops. I have tried downloading YouTube to my HDD w/Tube Me, YouRipper & YouTube Downloader w/o success [apparently due to my slow connection speed] for playback w/o interruptions. Do you have any recommendations for some FREEWARE that works in my situation? Thanks, BWH
