Which digital music software sounds the best?

by Peter Butler
Digital music player comparison(Credit: CNET Networks)

Last week, I had an opportunity to sit down with the developers of MXPlay, beta jukebox software that lets you mash up your music with streaming movies, letting you create your own virtual music videos.

More interesting than the mashup features, however, is MXPlay's unique playback interface. A graphical interface lets you control the location of the listening audience and the position and direction of your speakers. Letting you tweak your own "room" does create better-sounding tunes. The MXPlay folks were very happy to compare its playback sound to that of iTunes, and I must admit I could tell the difference.

That got me thinking a bit about the existing digital music players for PC. There are a ton of great all-in-one jukeboxes on CNET Download.com for managing your library, making playlists, burning CDs, and syncing your portable devices, but how do they sound when playing music?

MediaMonkey is my personal favorite music-management and playlist software, but when it comes to listening to music, I generally use Quintessential Player, which has a similar plug-in architecture as the classic free music player Winamp. A variety of plug-ins let me customize the sound for headphones or my full stereo system.

JetAudio Basic is yet another powerful free music player with customizable sound, and Foobar2000 is the geek-chic pick for playing your tunes, but what's your favorite? Which digital music software do you use when you've got a party and you need the best sound? Tell me about it in the comments.

Winamp is still #1
by jph6t May 15, 2007 12:57 PM PDT
Gotta vote for Winamp!

Minimal use of system resources. Excellent music management via it's Media Library. Active and devoted community that helps users with their wishes and issues. Ability to customize nearly exactly as one would want via the many plugins available. ALWAYS respects my files, and never edits them without my permission (how could you iTunes ... I expect that from Media Player but not you).

Winamp is still the best!

Just because it's a classic, doesn't mean it needs to be replaced.

Gotta be Winamp, but foobar is close behind.
by bsinnett May 15, 2007 1:42 PM PDT
Man. I'm choosing winamp for now, but if every plug-in existed for foobar2k that exists for winamp, i'd probably switch. Either way, they can both output digitally, and that's a necessity.

As a sound geek I use the least popular LOL

I have tested all current media players, and none of them sounds as good as xmplay. It does not have the state of the art interface, nor the unbelievable features, but it does have the sound. And if you don't believe me try it. You'll be amazed!

WinAmp with Dfx
by crescentdave May 15, 2007 2:00 PM PDT
I've listened to them all and winamp with the dfx plug-in clearly gives me the audio I want. I tested dfx with winamp and with wmp. Winamp output was clearly better. Having said that, I've not tried MXPlay or mediamonkey, so what do I know? Finally, I really wanted foobar to be the one, but ... just didn't do it for me.

I got it a few weeks ago...I tried it out, I'm not a musicphile (is that what you call em?) or anything, but I have to say that the sound quality versus my iTunes was amazingly better. I use mp3s when I have guest over at the house, so have been using this to make better use of my surround system..

I agree with you my friend. I consider MMJB the best player ever. Since earlier versions.
MediaMonkey + various winamp plugin
by Wiseworm May 15, 2007 2:17 PM PDT
For many years I've used Winamp but as my collection grew it couldn't manage it as well as i wanted. MM has great database features, a community that creates lot of scripts to enhance them and finally it supports many winamp plugins so i only had to move my winamp\plugin directory in MM\plugin.
About the topic question ("Which digital music software do you use when you've got a party and you need the best sound?") : I switch MM to Party Mode. Each one can add music to "now playing", but they can't modify anything and even access drives. about the sound quality, DFX (for winamp,of course) is good enough for most needs.

Best player for categorizing music and creating playlists. AutoDJ is hard to beat for designing quick playlists without going through entire library.

Requiem for MusicMatch
by ernieboy May 15, 2007 9:41 PM PDT
Once upon a time there was a great player that could deal with a great music database, that sounded great and actually was the king of the players. But about a little more than 4 years that king lost his crown. By version 9 Musicmatch began to have several issues as an all-in-one player, it began to have many freezes particularly with huge databases, and when Musicmatch began as one of the first competitors of the recently borned iTunes (with version 11 if I recall well), it began to fall down. Then came Yahoo! buying it and changing its name (Yahoo! Music Jukebox) and that was all for it...

Honestly I never have downloaded the Yahoo! version. But I can truly asure you that what MM was once before, it will hardly be again.

Personally MediaMonkey is my best player.

MusicMatch is/was the best
by zmark May 16, 2007 7:39 PM PDT
I've been using MusicMatch for over 5 years. However, it did start downhill with version 9. I agree with other users who found that it had become way bloated, slow. I liked MM so much long ago, I bought the 'forever' upgrade. But I uninstalled version 9 because it had started downhill. I went back to what I believe is the best last version (ver. 8.2). I saved the installer exe. for 8.2 to have if I need it.
MusicMatch was the king at one time, outstanding library organization, great sound, great ripper/burner. Nothing has come close enough for me to switch.
WMP 11 Does it for Me
by combrains May 15, 2007 10:50 PM PDT
I used to use musicmatch because in my opinion, no other programs interface comes close in terms of organisation of my library but since version 9 or so it became rather sluggish and bloated and slowed my whole system down when running.

I now use WMP 11. I never used to like it because it was hard to use but since version 11 I havne't used anything else. It sounds all right too.

Media Monkey would be a close second or, if you're a linux fan like me, Armorok.

JetAudio does it for me !!!
by NYCgoalie May 16, 2007 12:05 PM PDT
JetAudio has always had a ton a features that Audiophiles have liked, not to mention ease of use. In previous incarnations (before 7.0), it also had a small memory footprint on your PC.

However, as good as JetAudio is, it's parent company (COWON) is primarily focused on it's hardware and in my opinion, does not spend the resources neccessary to improve JetAudio even further.

Still, though XM Player is good, JetAudio is still king.

Winamp with DFX Enhancer
by barrabuster May 16, 2007 8:43 PM PDT
I have tried them all but the only one that came close to Winamp on my surround system was Nero6 media player. It had a pure sound playing mp3's.But Nero 7 doesn't have it. But Winamp is the BEST as long as it has DFX Enhancer plug-in...
