Must-have Windows tools

System utilities may not seem like the most provocative category in the annals of software development, but the apps within are essential for maintaining a tip-top computer. On top of that, their universality makes them a good choice for almost any computer.

With that in mind, we gathered together seven of our favorite freeware applications--most will support Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems. This list isn't the end-all and be-all--not when so many quality programs abound--but it is a good beginning.

We start with Glary Utilities, which is actually a suite of apps to optimize and tweak Windows computers. CCleaner and Smart Defrag also make the top of our list for sweeping away Internet tracks and drefragmenting the hard disk, respectively. When it's traces of files you're worried about after removing a program, Revo Uninstaller is our go-to app, thanks to its capability to scour nooks and crannies for leftovers.

When it comes to maintaining files, we're fans of 7-Zip, which can compress large files in a range of formats, including ZIP and RAR. To preserve those files in the event of a system crash, we recommend a backup program like SyncBack, which is accessible enough for most home users. Finally, a recovery app like Pandora Recovery belongs in your collection, for hunting down files you may have mistakenly deleted.

Do you have other favorite utility essentials? In the newsletter, click the "Read More" link below to share them in the comments. Check out our original roundup.

I prefer Advanced System care rather than ccleaner.ccleaner had messed up my system a few times. <br />Also, I prefer the auslogics disk defrag to iobit system defrag. <br />Registry defrag by iobit is a must have software. <br />JC&#38;B 's quicknote a tiny , but very useful program. try it to have it always in your system!

I agree with you on Advanced system care and iobit software, but can't find JC&#38;B's Quicknote. Please advise

I have ccleaner, but I too find Iobit's Advanced System care better.<br /><br />Re Quicknote: I've looking for this since my old computer crashed about 3 years ago but couldn't remember the name. here's the cnet link: http://download.cnet.com/3001-2351_4-10116772.html?spi=babe838ecd9c8292d897f7272404e5fa&#38;part=dl-Quicknote<br /><br />Two other free-ware programs I consider must-haves are Clipboard Magic, http://download.cnet.com/Clipboard-Magic/3000-18487_4-10018572.html?tag=mncol and cnet Tech Tracker, http://download.cnet.com/CNET-TechTracker-app/3000-18513_4-10912909.html?tag=mncol which still has a couple of minor bugs but is much improved from the Beta which I used regularly. Basically this is a small app that sits on your toolbar and let's you know when any of the programs you downloaded from cnet has an update. Sure beats trying to remember which ones you've checked for updates lately.

I agree. I tried CC twice, two different computers. Kept glitching and giving me problems. I have been using Advanced System for a few months as part of my coillection of highly rated security and operation downloads. I choose to run it every time I log off. It is quick, EZ and effective.

Lol, CCleaner didn't mess up your system. <br />It does not do anything to mess up, deletes temp files, and trash etc, <br />Can remove programs, IF YOU go to the area just like windows ADD/REMOVE tell it to. lol.. <br />It does a shallow scan of registry and does a great job at it..Like finding missing references for programs you uninstalled. or programs that were porrly written leave things behind or have bad references <br />Simple as that..

I tried to download the iobit software, thank goodness, My Free AVG 9.0 sotware caught the fact that they are nothing more than a phising scam. It looks to me like these folks are posting to this site to suck you into thinking thiers is better when it is really just a SCAM!!!

MyDefrag, former JKDefrag is an excellent, and free, utility, at least for XP. I'll try Pandora, and already have the others.

Pandora is great. It'll recover stuff you thought you'd deleted years ago.

What's different about defrag programs and the defrag that's already part of Windows?
by Carol J Hazen November 10, 2009 2:31 AM PST
Right now I don't have anything to say.

then zip it
by system001 November 10, 2009 6:56 AM PST
but do not ever 7-zip it. for large files 7-zip will corrupt them. winrar is the program you want even if it cost. as for ccleaner if it crashed someones system they used the program wrong.

but do not 7-zip it. 7-zip for large files will corrupt them. as for ccleaner crasging someones system only if they did not know how to use the program correctly.

I prefer Driver Heaven TuneXP 1.5 as an excellent and free utility for XP. It has a bootup defrag, system disk defrag, as well as a lot of other useful utiities contained in the program. It is fast and doesn't take up a lot of memory. TuneXP can also speed up your internet.

iZarc is far superior to 7zip...and I also prefer Auslogics for defrag. ( at least for Vista) .CCleaners uninstaller is very basic, no different than windows uninstaller system Revo goes much deeper.

I have followed the suggestions found on C-net over the years. Now I'm really loaded down... LOL <br /><br />I do prefer to use System Mechanic. Version 9 is much more user friendly than past issues. With it's automated tools for defraging and cleaning, it is a snap and seems to do a great job.<br /><br />Uniblue's Registry Booster has been a great program for those of us who do not know that much about registry issues.

I absolutely abhor System Mechanic - it worked great for about a week then bogged down my system every time I ran a scan after that. I still have a fragment of it on my hard drive somewhere because every time I boot up I see that it tries to do a registry defrag even though the suite is long gone. <br /> <br />I prefer using Advanced System Care backed up with AVG antivirus and Spybot for malware. I haven't had an issue with any of them and they run really smoothly.

I'm sure that the responses to this are/will be as varied as a persons choices in selecting an automobile, however, even if you love chevys, give ford it's due.And CNET has ALWAYS been the one to look to to dig out all the "Fords" in software. For this I'm grateful, keep up the great work folks, and Thank you :-)

Instead of 7-ZIP I prefer the open source IZArc for zipping and I agreewith ohthers that Advanced SystemCare of IOBit belongs to this list. I also use the Wise registry Cleaner Free (on my spare PC) and Wise Registry Cleaner Pro (on my main PC).<br /><br />Jan

Smart defrag seems to be very good on my XP machine. I've been using it a good while with no problems at all. It's also a speedy little defragger!

"When it comes to maintaining files, we're fans of 7-Zip, which can compress large files in a range of formats, including ZIP and RAR" <br /> <br />That is not true. The RAR format is proprietary, and only a few programs which have permission from the authors (the Roshal brothers) can create RAR archives. 7zip can only read (uncompress) the RAR files.

i had tune up 2009 but as soon as i went to windows 7 now when i try to reinstall it tells me that windows 7 is not supported, <br />but it is supported in the 2010 version as i have well over 9 months left and seem not to be able to get any redress <br />i am not impresed.Other wise i was very pleased with with it. <br />By the way i have 2010 on trial but i'm not going to pay for the full version when it expires.

I prefer tune up soft wear, any how ? most of them is useful and easy to use but I still think that we need more themes programs to keep us in change mood all the time !?
