One of our chief occupations at CNET Download.com is to keep our eyes peeled for excellent freeware. We've got our own picks for ultimate free applications (and also for the most essential), but we like to consider your opinions, too. CNET Executive Editor Tom Merritt recently conducted an informal poll among his Facebook and Twitter contacts, asking for their favorite no-cost software. Here are the five apps that readers--maybe you--tapped as the best of the best.

Every yin has its yang. To balance out the five best downloads, all of them available on Download.com, are the five biggest stinkers of the season. Should your want to gawk at the combined mediocrity of these duds, these applications are also available on Download.com. You've been warned.

In Windows 7 news, many of you have written in with questions about upgrading from Windows XP and Windows Vista. CNET News' Ina Fried tries to clear up some confusion about what you can and can't do with a Windows 7 upgrade disk. There. We hope that helps.

Jessica Dolcourt reviews the latest and greatest smartphone apps, in addition to a healthy dose of Windows software. E-mail Jessica and follow her on Twitter.

Don't believe it!! The VLC Media player is garbage. Added it's own extensions to files making them unplayable on WM, but could not handle playing the files itself.
Also comes with some 'nice' Adware. Had to uninstall and do a system restore to get my video files back. Not to mention that pulling files into the VLC library is incredibly annoying and slow.

You had other problems, OR you got a phony file.
I like EVERYONE esle here, has used it for a long time, NOT ONE thing wrong with VLC.
Which is also available as a portable app, portableapps.com.
Good little program.
Also scan all your files and programs BEFORE you open or install them with MORE than your local antivirus.
Go to virustotal.com scan at onelivecare, and housecall by trendmicro, AND use your adware programs like malwarebytes, or spybot etc..then you will be fairly confident you will be okay.

OK. This many comments has me convinced to try again. Maybe I did get a PHONY version...?? Could someone give me the TRUE url for downloading VLC? Thanks for all the replies, I don't mind admitting I'm wrong. Live and learn, eh?

I've been using the VLC video player for years without a single problem, and I've never seen a single ad either! I highly recommend it. I've even used it to watch a dvd on my laptop (for free) where the MS media player wanted to charge me to download the codec.

I have using VLC for two years, NEVER any problems. I use my laptop for all my media, I gave up my tv and stereo. No matter what it is, I can count on VLC to play it.

This is there site videolan.org/vlc/ they added a ad in the video player only when you watch movies or video because there is another window that appears to see the video. I really don't see why they didn't do it sooner, the product is free, so why not let them use ads to support them right.
