Latest Thunderbird rolls search changes

Mozilla released a major update Tuesday to the beta build of its desktop e-mail client Thunderbird, debuting a new search feature, "smart" folders, an activity manager for monitoring communication with your mail server, and better Gmail integration among the list of improvements. Thunderbird 3 beta 4 is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The smart folder view condenses your various in-boxes into one gestalt in-box, but it's easy to switch back to the traditional view if you don't like it. In the folders pane, use the left and right arrows at the top right to change your folder view until you're looking at the one you prefer. Thunderbird will remember your last setting, so when you restart it won't jump back to the smart folder setting. If you have multiple e-mail accounts, though, this should make managing your e-mail stream much easier.

Apparently, there was a lot of code that was overhauled in this fourth beta and that might explain why my default button bar and toolbar settings reverted to normal. It might also have been because of the introduction of the new search bar, which defaults to a significant chunk of window space. The global search bar features auto-complete as well as more robust filtering tools for narrowing down a broad search quickly.

I found the new search to work well, opening the results in a new tab, although occasionally narrowing down results did not produce the desired result of fewer e-mails in the results window. Searching by tags also appeared spotty at times. Searches do produce a nifty chart, accessible by clicking on the blue bar graph at the top of the search results, that's good for numbers junkies who want to see how often that particular search term shows up.

Windows users should also find that Thunderbird results will now appear when search in Windows Vista and Windows 7, while Mac users will find Growl notification support for new e-mails, integration with the Mac OS X address book, and support for Mail.app. Beta 4 doesn't support legacy versions of Windows prior to Windows 2000 or Mac OS X 10.3 and older.

Thunderbird 3 beta 4 supports the nightly builds of the calendaring plug-in Lightning, but many other add-ons are likely to break until their publishers release compatibility updates. The full list of Thunder 3 beta 4 changes can be read here.

Please tell me that you can right-click on any email address and have a menu option to bring up a search result on all correspondence with that email address (sent and received) in nice (reverse) chronological order. That would be a huge time saver.

Nope. That's a great idea, too.

That's not in beta 4, but I'm hoping we can get it into TB3 final. I agree it'd be super useful.

Thunderbird is good. Does it have more filtering options? Also Lightning plugin can be made to sync with Google calendar with a bit of tweaking - although there is no 'refresh' button, it's a matter of restarting TB to get it to sync. Is there any more development in that area?

Just downloaded beta 4. I am very disappointed that it still insists on wasting my screen real estate by using much more vertical space for the message headers. In Thunderbird 2, when you selected a message to see the message body, you could set it to only use a single text line to show the "From" and "Subject". Now, "From", "Subject", and "To" are spread over 3 lines (god forbid the msg you're looking at also has a "Bcc" and "Reply-To" :-(

twolf2919: If you want a smaller header view, there is an add-on you can use: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/13564

They've also gotten rid of the second toolbar that held only message controls. TB now defaults to only showing them next to the message header.

That's an awesome plug-in. Thanks, David!

is there a way of adding a image header to all messages being sent, forwarded, reply... ? i don't mean those headers where you see the IP and all that; rather i am talking about the image page header that i can keep as default, just like a footer where i can have a signature but i know how to get a footer done; haven't figured out about the header yet :(
any help would be appreciated.

Can two different computers access the same e-mails and e-mail account? If I mark an e-mail as read on my computer can it show up as read on y colleagues computer?

I am curious if the actually allow to add multiple accounts from same provider (like yahoo). When I used it a few years ago they didn't. at least not for yahoo. Also it was not possible to push emails back to the browser once "keep on the server" option is set.
