Buy a monitor or laptop with inbuilt touch screen technology! I will no longer need to buy expensive ****** tabletpens! Woo hoo!

Meh, I have Windows 7 but until I buy a computer with touch screen I probably won't utilize it.

They'll be coming down in price too! I'll certainly be looking for one - hopefully some capacitive OLED screens!

Nice video. I wish though that you'd make a longer video showcasing all touch features in Windows 7.

One thing about right-clicks, you can do a two-finger tab like in the video, but I think you can also touch the screen and wait for the circle to fill up?

I'm interested in touch in Windows 7 and I hope the prices for touch-enable monitors are good, or I won't be able to afford one.

No, but it will come with a set if hand weights to help build up your forearms--because after doing that touch screen
for a few minutes your arms will be tired. They should throw in a bottle of advil too. Another lame attempt by microtanic to 'improve' on technology.

but if apple released a tablet it would be the single greatest piece of technology ever known to grace our presence right? hypocrite

@The_happy_switcher

holy hell that has to be the most ridiculous (and pathetic) comment i've ever read, i thought you were joking until you made it clear that by adding support for touch screens (not making computers with them, or forcing touch upon anyone, mind you, but simply by adding more support for them) microsoft is devolving technology (not to mention blatantly conspiring to wear out your poor wittle arms) in your opinion

you know, because apple making an all touch screen phone wasn't the greatest thing in the world to you, truthfully i'd probably get one but i think my thumbs would get tired from moving around the screen so much

that's just really funny

korbycon1,

Touch/Multi touch on a tablet is a very different thing... MS has done the tablet thing for a while now... and it works pretty well. Reaching out to your desktop screen with your arms.. however.. is a pretty bad way to interface with your computer. Don't believe me.. keep your arms extended toward your screen for 5 minutes.. just 5 minutes.. and you will see.
by lennie22 July 18, 2009 4:21 PM PDT
@ballmerisanape:

there are times when I want to do things on my computer and simply touching the screen would be way better than interfacing with the keyboar and mouse. also, you seem to forget the fact that the option to use a keyboard and mouse in conjuction with the touch interface is still a go...you dont' have to choose one or the other, you can use them both at the same time.

I certainly wished my 16inch laptop was touch enabled because I don't like using the touchpad....it just seems so unnatural...being able to just touch the screen whenever I want and use the hardwar keyboard whenever I want is something I really want. I can't wait for this thing to become mainstream. Windows 7 should help this pioneering touch screen movement greatly.

if you don't like the tech then you just don't like the tech, but for me....I'm eagerly awaiting it to be mainstream.

"just 5 minutes.. and you will see."
if your monitor is set on a 90 degree angle where your elbows have no support then that can be problem for some people, however, have set ur monitor on a 65, 55 or even a 45 degree angle, where you'd be looking down on it as opposed to looking up at it, then the problem would be reduced as the user can then rest his/her elbows when needed.....it's the same reason a lot of keyboards come with a place the user can rest his/her wrists when they're not actively typing.
ex: http://www.smartdesks.com/computer-desks-fiseries.asp

the fact that you're downplaying this kind of tech is quite ridiculous, it shows how weak your mind is.
it clearly shows you have no clue of the power that lies in the ability manipulate objects with your own hands and fingers instead of using the keyboard and mouse wihich is an abstract way of interfacing.

i just have one comment...

do u ppl seriously keep ur hand on the screen? i would've just click(touched?) what ever i needed to touch then rest my arm on the table or my chair =.=

where do ppl get the idea they have to keep their hands in the air =.=

How long before someone's running full blown Windows 7 on smart phone or zune hd?

well, you technically can run it on your smart phone....but that would be running it through remote desktop.....so yeah, you'll need an internet connection
by jake3373 July 20, 2009 4:35 PM PDT
Yeah, but remote desktop isn't always reliable... or speedy...

Touch screens are a lame niche market. Sure, you can put a keyboard on the screen. Now try to type 60 words a minute on it.

Move along, nothing to see here...

Yeah but if Apple did it you think it would be the greatest thing since sliced bread isn't that right?
by lennie22 July 18, 2009 10:40 AM PDT
um, I hope you know that something has to be a niche market before it becomes mainstream......you knew that, right?
and through text prediction one might be able to write even 65wpm

case in point:
Q. which do you think would be able to write the word "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" faster....a hardware keyboard or software keyboard?
A. software keyboard, because all the user would need to type is only a fraction of the word such as "supercali".....
however, if that word isn't in the software's dictionary then the hardware keyboard would win.
by Nataku4ca July 20, 2009 1:03 PM PDT
@lennie

good point

@mjconver

u know u can use keyboard too right?? the touch screen is meant for replacing the mouse not the whole set of input =.= unless u always buy keyboard +mouse combo, i guess that would lead u into thinking that

I already explored Windows 7 and it's totally awesome...

This is such a welcome technology. cant wait till there are affordable 22" monitors that support this. With all the shoulder and wrist pain I have I definitely the option to have multiple ways of interacting with the computer. I have heard some HP executives suggest there isnt enough of a market for it. I hope we end up with enough useful choices for PCs. Otherwise we will end up handing another market for Apple to grab

I am familiar with some of the Apple gestures through my I-Touch. Hope computer manufacturers will have some way to resist the fingertip smudges rampant on those very glossy screens. While the internet interface is esthetically "beautiful", I am distracted by the brief [microsecond] blurring while the screen reacts to change. I am also a BB pearl user. A trackball/mouse could get the same job done. Overall, I applaud Microsoft's attempt to keep up with these trends. While they bloat memory, they have been very good in presenting alternative options to the user since those DOS days...

Ergonomics is the science of designing a work area and equipment, to fit the user. Screens are typically and rightfully positioned to meet the eyes. Keyboard and any pointing device are most efficient within the area where hands and arms are relaxed and supported. An occasional gesture to the screen as a shortcut for multiple keystrokes or longer pointing device motions may be a benefit. Multiple persons interacting and designing at one monitor could use this technology, if everyone is at the same level of understanding the movements. Large repetitive wand like motions continuously, may be counter-productive and very excessive to anyone doing any computer work. The smaller work areas seem to require this feature when space is at a premium.

I would like to know if you have a older computer if you can just buy a touch screen monitor and download the software will it work ? If not what can you do ? I have seen the touch screen computers and yes they are nice but they come with a price also. I like the idea that you really do not need the keyboard and or the mouse also, it gives you more room and you do not have to worry about things getting into the keyboard and the mouse being in the way also.

What more needs to be said.Everyone's comments are absolutely correct as It pertains to the individual user. I believe that touch screen technology is great, and a welcome enhancement, but it remains for me to see if it can interact with graphics software, like Turbo Cad, etc, and conform to precise movements and inputs. Looking at the examples of the use of touchscreen, It looks easy and it seems to fit those of us who like to experiment with new and creative inventions to satisfy that little urge for something different. The best that we can do, is give it a try. I am waiting for the release of the virtual touchscreen were you can just sit, and wave your hand or make a gesture and the image appears in thin air. Now that's Technology supreme.......

I can go one better then simply waving your hand or making a gesture, we all know it's just a case of sensory pick up, so a simple thought(corresponding respectively to) may invoke a form of interactive 3-D image that responds to any or all preset variable inputs(voice, thought, eye movement, hand and finger gestures etc..) after being unlocked/displayed.
Now that is technology of tomorrow, and people are concerned about Windows 7 touch screens.
I say lets just move on, this is just a small step in time that is moving to fast to stop and ponder about little things like how my arms will get sore, or how slow it will make you type.
Adjust and move on, your grandchildren and there grandchildren will benefit from the actions you make, so do it now and don't leave it for them to have to make the call about a touch screen in 100 years.

What will be the condition of monitor screen in a month or so after touching it hundreds of times daily?more over one has to sit quite close to monitor for using the touch screen hence weakening eyesight faster than the conventional keyboard and mouse.well the advancement in tech will keep on for betterment but this touch screen is not surely for a professional graphic designer.useful for many and at the same time useless for many.
