Updated at 12:42 p.m. with more add-on details and a statement about Google Gears.

Firefox 3.5 logo

Like you, we've been hotly anticipating the launch of Firefox 3.5 for Windows and Mac. Yet every time a browser receives a major update, it ghosts out a good chunk of those favorite, ingenious, and time-saving extensions we've come to rely on. That is, until the lagging publishers update their add-ons to make them compatible once again.

Google is one high-profile example with Gears. "We're working on pushing out a new Gears version that support FF 3.5," Google's Aaron Boodman wrote to Gears users Monday online. "We typically wait until the official 'gold' release of Firefox is pushed, because otherwise, we keep having to do new builds every time a new RC is pushed."

We've compiled what is by no means an exhaustive list of extensions that we find do and do not work in Firefox 3.5 at launch. Add your insights to the comments--we'll be updating this post throughout the day. Mozilla also has a compatibility report that takes the 95 percent most-used add-ons and matches them to their version numbers. A quick glance will tell you if your favorites are a go.

If you want to attempt to force Firefox to accept old add-ons, there are ways, but prepare yourself for consequences: bugs, stability breakdowns, and tampering with advanced settings. Two Firefox 3.5-ready add-ons that often correct incompatibility are Nightly Tester Tools and MR Tech Toolkit. CNET Executive Editor Tom Merritt shows you another way to teach the new 'Fox old tricks. Both methods essentially override the maximum version number rule that keeps Firefox from loading an add-on that's been approved for a previous version build, like 3.0. Nightly Tester Tools, for instance, is cleared for versions 3.0b5 through 3.6a1pre.

Works with Firefox 3.5:
Adblock Plus
All-In-One Sidebar
AVG Safe Search
ColorfulTabs
CoolIris (requires manual redownload or reinstallation)
Customize Google
FireFTP
Flagfox
FlashGot
Forecastfox Enhanced
FoxyTunes
Greasemonkey
Googlepedia
Google Preview
Google Toolbar
IE Tab
iMacros
Java QuickStarter
McAfee Site Advisor
NoScript
Personal Menu
Read It Later
Roboform (PC only--requires manual redownload or reinstallation)
Select-n-Go by Cleeki
Session Manager
Shareaholic
Site Launcher
SmarterFox
SmoothWheel
Ubiquity
XMarks

Doesn't work with Firefox 3.5:
Better Gmail 2
Drag & DropZones
gDocsBar
Google Gears (read above)
Headup
Minimize To Tray Enhancer
Open in Google Chrome
Prism
Searchery
Tab Mix Plus
Tab Minus

Update Notifier

Note: Windows links for Firefox add-ons should also work on Macs.

I've been using Roboform, with the FF adapter, just fine since RC1.
by lazycat202 June 30, 2009 4:13 PM PDT
Roboform works with FF3.5
just go to Roboform web site and download extension.

Forecastfox Enhanced is available for Firefox 3.5.

Tab Mix Plus has a beta version in testing which appears to work fine with Firefox 3.5. It is available from the author's support site.

Well, mostly fine. It does have a few quirks. I reported a crash if you use TMP's Session Manager (instead of Firefox's) and exit from Private Browsing. But for the most part, it does work very well. I've had no other problems (and installed the separate Session Manager extension to work around the aforementioned issue).
by Someone-else June 30, 2009 12:21 PM PDT
I could get some (like Read it Later) to work by using the nightly tester tools extension. Unfortunately, tab mix plus didn't work.

Actually, Shareaholic *DOES* work with Fx 3.5. I'm using it right now as we speak.

I commented above as well--it hadn't been working before, but agreed, it's compatible.

TidyRead works with FF 3.5 without any problem. It is even faster.

Daum...but it worksu to. The only add-ons I actually use are Daum and adblock.

Suppressed version control for the incompatible addons (Opens Search Box, MinimizeToTray Enhancer, Tab Scope, SageToo to name a few) and all works fine.

Noscript + Adblock Plus work. Forfox 3.5 it's absolutely fantastic now. Love the + thingy on the tabs and of course the speed is awesome too.

We're still seeing a "Not compatible with Firefox 3.5" marker for this one.
by SMARTFoundation July 23, 2009 7:30 AM PDT
after upgrading to 3.5 Gmail refuses to open?
Any suggestion?
by zizzybaloobah June 30, 2009 12:47 PM PDT
Shareaholic is working.

Also you can install MR Tech Toolkit, and that will allow you to force incompatible add-ons to be marked as compatible. That has so far worked for add-ons I need but haven't been upgraded yet: This of course could cause problems - I would force on add-on at a time, test, and repeat.

Several add-ons that I had to force to be compatible, have been upgraded in the last few days, including WebDeveloper. Firebug, and a few others.

The DigitalPersona Extension that enables the fingerprint reader for logins on some laptops (mine is an HP) currently isn't compatible.

I looked a couple of days ago on the DigitalPersona website and I found in the FAQs something posted back in March about how they were currently working on a compatible version for FF3.5 and IE8. I've got an HP as well and since I've upgraded, I can't use my fingerprint reader. I'm not sure if it works on any other laptops, I just know that it says the current version of the extension isn't compatible with Firefox 3.5.

Here's the link, if it helps. http://www.digitalpersona.com/index.php?id=bus_support_faq_FFupdate

Even after re-installing Colorful Tabs, it shows up but doesn't work. I have switched from my previous theme theme (which was not 3.5 compatible) to one that does(a black version called something?-fox).
The only other extension I miss is smooth scrolling...........oh well.............I'll be patient.

SmoothWheel is available--have you tried it as an alternative? (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/357)

Also, ColorfulTabs should be compatible up to version 3.6a1pre. (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1368) Sorry it's not working for you.

FYI, Customize Google hasn't been updated since October '08 and a lot of the features don't work anymore.

Here's a rundown of my ... uh, tens of add-ons.

Works:
- Adblock Plus
- Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper
- Clippings
- ColorZilla
- CoLT
- DownloadHelper
- DownThemAll!
- Fast Dial
- Favicon Picker 3
- FEBE
- File Title
- Firefox Showcase
- Fireshot
- FlashGot
- FoxyProxy
- Googlepedia
- Greasefire
- Greasemonkey
- Hide Find Bar
- IdentFavIcon
- InfoLister
- Java Quick Starter
- JSView
- Long URL Please
- MR Tech Toolkit
- Nightly Tester Tools
- NoScript
- Outwit Images
- Outwit Kernel
- Paste and Go 3
- Paste to Tab and Go
- Personas for Firefox
- PingFire (but conflicts with NoScript. Plus I have to force this with Nightly Tester Tool)
- Reload Plus
- Save Images
- SearchLoad Options
- Send Tab URLs
- Session Manager
- SQLite Manager
- Stylish
- Tab Mix Plus (beta build from the developer's website)
- Text Link
- WiseStamp
- Xmarks

Doesn't work (with the action I'll take):
- CacheViewer (I'll wait for an update)
- Edit Middle (I'll wait for an update)
- Evernote Web Clipper (not a big deal actually, just use Win-A. I might uninstall this one)
- Google Gears (I mistakenly thought this is required by Gmail. I'll just uninstall)
- KasKusMenu (my own extension for accessing a local webforum -- yeah, I know, shame on me xP)
- More Tools Menu (I'll try 'forcing' using NTT)
- Palette Grabber (I'll wait for an update)
- Redirect Remover (I'll try 'forcing' using NTT)
- Update Notifier (I'll sorely miss this one -- so I'll try 'forcing' using NTT)
- View Dependencies (I need this for proxy management -- I'll try 'forcing' using NTT)

Whew. There. Detailed enough?

Detailed enough? Yes! Though on Mozilla's add-ons page, Evernote Web Clipper shows clearance through version 3.6a1pre.
