Last week Redmond offered alert PC users a proposition: a limited beta test of its latest security application, called Microsoft Security Essentials to the first 75,000 fast-acting users in the United States, China, Israel, and Brazil. We hardly have to tell you that spots for the freeware antivirus tool that will replace Live OneCare were snapped up less than 24 hours after we posted our story.

If you weren't quick enough to join the testing herd, or if you live in one of the 191 other countries worldwide, Download.com Senior Associate Editor Seth Rosenblatt has all the information you need to get a feel for the Microsoft app's pros and cons. In addition to delving into the hands-on review, you can tune into this First Look video for a live-action peek.

Jessica Dolcourt reviews the latest and greatest smartphone apps, in addition to a healthy dose of Windows software. E-mail Jessica and follow her on Twitter.

Or just continue to download it here: http://tinyurl.com/nuhqqx (safe, its from softpedia). Note: There are bugs, and microsoft would like to stay with 75,000 testers to fix bugs.

I find it difficult to believe that Microsoft who produce so much of the flawed software that makes virus attacks so easy can produce a cure which is vastly more secure than their normal products.

Would any one drive a car made by Microsoft? While it's position as pre-emminent OS system is undeniable so is the fact it is the most flawe.,A hacker and virus pushers idea of paradise is a world with only MS products. and like indac I do not believe an MS Anti Virus will be any improvement over their already vast stable of shabby and flawed programs.

Like I keep saying, "If it ain't broke, Don't fix it". I have been running Avast Antivirus and Windows Defender on my machines, (and I have three of them) for the last five years. Not one of them has had any problems so far. Microsoft needs to start making programs that will speed up computers and make them easier to use. Or at least make programs that keep up with the demands of todays internet. They still haven't fixed all the compatable problems with Vista. That would be a good place to start.

I've also use and love avast! and have for for over 6 years without problems. I disagree with your comment about the Vista fix. The fix is called Windows 7.
I've been running Windows 7 on two systems since the early beta release and currently run the RC release and it's been a real pleasure.
I'm currently testing Microsoft's Security Essentials on a Dell laptop running Windows 7.
If it gets infected, I'll be back to my avast! but for now, Security Essentials has the job of protecting this laptop.

irdac...If MSFT hires a group of security folks to create a security program seperate from their OS designers, how would that be any different from other Anti-Virus programmers?

In addition, because Windows takes up the vast majoriy of PC's they are bound to get the most time and effort into attacks. MAC's have just as many if not more flaws, they are just not as popular (as they think they are) and therefore don't have as many* viruses created for them. Some of these posts are very ignorant and I resent some of the comments.

I have used Avast for the last 4years too and find it brilliant. No problems whatsever, but after Live Care which I used once, it blocked every software I wanted to install.

in re arrowsmith's comment:
"it" blocked every software I wanted to install.
What does "it" refer to? Avast? Live Care? Avast after using Live Care? Can't tell which program is giving you problems. Thanks.

"IT" is reference to Live Care. See comment from kaywill.

WARNING!!
Live One Care and many other "Microsoft Help Software" & "Service pack 3" all contain a program which states
THEY HAVE YOUR OK TO SCAN YOUR COMPUTER (AT ALL TIMES) FOR NON-REGESTERED PRODUCTS & BLOCK ANYTHING FOUND SUSPICIOUS.
(My computer was locked up when CompUSA had not regeistered several computers w/ XP programs ALREADY IN THE COMPUTER WHEN PURCHASED. This was seen as "ILLEGAL SOFTWARE" by this program & locked the computer. It took a COMPLETE restoring of my computer- 4 HOURS ON THE PHONE W/ MICROSOFT TECHS! Allot was lost! )

In Europe many professional/goverment computers were locked up & they won a huge lawsuit from Microsoft for this!

(also things downloaded on the internet & CNET like the "original" Decrypter/Shrink etc are stopped & blocked by this Microsoft deceptive program!)

In some of the AUTO UPDATES frim them you get "Service Pack 3" that has nothing else but this spy program. You must set the auto update to "ask me before downloading" & READ WHAT YOU ARE GETTING BEFORE SAYING "YES"! I did & caught this!

It cannot be removed!

**It is like a TROJEN HORSE...LOOKS LIKE A GOOD GIFT ON THE OUTSIDE...BUT AN ENEMY ON THE INSIDE!

Everytime I shut off my computer & turn it on a Microsoft window pops up asking me if I want to download this program. I have to say no every time. THEY KNOW I DONT HAVE IT YET...AND WONT!

Just a WARNING!

I have never experienced anything that you have said (although I have Automatic Updates to download only after asking me).

Kaywill, you mentioned "Service Pack 3" being a problem. For what OS are you talking about please? As for virus protection, I use Avast and have 0 problems with it. What program has M$ created that has ever been problem free or anywhere close?

Have run Windows since its conception. I run 5 Dell PC's. Have no problems with Latest XP service packs and Vista service packs. Ran live one-care for a year on all PC's with NO PROBLEMS. Uninstalled it because I did not want to pay for AV's nor Firewalls anymore. Believe they should be provided by the OS manufacturer for free which is what Microsoft is gearing up to do NOW. All of your third party security systems are bloated software. Free OR paid for. They have internal conflicts unseen by basic users with the OS because the OS is closed source. Seems that all scans slow down the PC speed when running. Does not matter if it is AVAST, AVG, NORTON, McAFEE or whatever. Have tried them all over the years. It is about time that an OS manufacturer created this service for free that runs with the source code in conjunction with it. From what I am hearing scans have minimal effects on system speeds ect;.
As for SP3, no problems as all my software is LEGAL. Yes, if you have a pirated copy of windows XP or Vista they will GET YOU! Your problem with a compusa pc not being properly registered sounds like a compusa problem....not Microsofts. Security works both ways ya know. It is NOT just for the buyer. The maker must be protected too. How would YOU like it if you invented a product and for every one copy sold ten illegal copies were traded or sold. That is a deep cut in your profits and I would think that YOU would want to do something about it too. If MS wants to scan my PC's for illegal software that is perfectly fine by me.
As for the many complaints and put downs that are SURE to follow....many are going to be generated by the third party AV manufacturers BECAUSE this new FREE system is going to RUN THEM OUT OF BUSINESS. Nuff said.

Hmmmmmm ........interesting things you say,IMHO a computer should come with a free O.S. since its just a expensive book-end without.Funny thing is ole Billy boy and his merry thieves from M$ stole the orginal DOS software from someone and then sold it to IBM for a piece of the action.Dont get me wrong it was a real smart move on his part but was still stealing noneless.Im not surprized at all that the software may have some spy B.S. in it,thats what they do.As was said they are trying to fix a problem that is caused by their code being so wide open.If you install a clean O.S. from M$ (any version)and then run an anti-spy,anti-malware app you will get a hit that you already have this kinda stuff installed courtesy of Billy boy and his merry band of thieves. BTW I think ur very lucky not to have any apps or software "nuked" by M$ cause it appears to be a pretty common thing even with legal software. At least I finally did find someone that supports M$ and their unfair practices. As W.C Fields said there is a sucker born every minute.

I agree with Kaywill and have had an unpleasant experience with the "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB 905474) " tool, Even though my Windows XP is genuine, it turned my screen black and slowed down my operating speed down to an infuriating crawl. Normal operation was only restored after re-installing Windows - an exasperating exercise!
I now avoid a repeat of this by setting my Updates Download to "ask me before downloading" and un-clicking the "Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB 905474) " when ever it pops up.
There are instances when it appears amongst a bundle of other updates, you have to read all the downloads offered before installing. For those on "Automatic Downloads" and have never had this particular problem. GOOD LUCK!
