Minor update to Safari 4

by Seth Rosenblatt

Apple has released a minor change to Safari 4 for Mac users.

Safari 4.0.1 addresses incompatibilities between the browser and certain features in iPhoto '09, including Places and Facebook publishing. No changes were made to the Windows version.

When the original version 4 was released last week, it surprised many observers with its new position as one of the faster browsers available, rendering JavaScript at speeds comparable or faster than Google Chrome.

Seth peers into the deep, dark corners of software so that you don't have to. He has yet to suffer a single nightmare about OS/2. You can follow him on Twitter.

But its probably annoying as heck to Safari users on Mac.

Mr. Dee-The only thing annoying as heck is reading your half-a@@ and ignorant comments. Why do you come here?

Well Safari 4 was only recently released so I guess a "minor" update so soon is news. No big deal to install, just a few clicks and a short wait.

It was indeed annoying in that the update required a reboot. How Windowsy.

I have no frustrations with Apple (although I think my point is proven with that half-a@@ statement). In fact, Safari 4 has run just fine for me. It loads faster and most web pages load quicker too.

@AndrewRich

Remember, Safari on the Mac means the application itself and the WebKit framework that is used by most applications that need to render HTML content unless they have written their own engine (e.g. other web browsers). It is for this reason that a reboot is necessary to ensure that the WebKit framework can be updated without fouling up any other applications that may be using it.

Mind you, it is odd that the recent update to Java did not require a reboot.

@ kelmon - thanks for that explanation. I too threw up in the back of my throat a little when a Safari update forced me to reboot my machine. It reminded me of winblows, internet exploder and being a mindless slave like Mr. Dee here.

I guess I understand better now, but that doesn't make me like it more.

The last time I had to reboot to install a Windows update was SP2 for Windows Vista. It completed replacing large amounts of files and making my already stable Vista computer even more stable. No blue screens, unlike when copying an app and using it at the same time on Mac OS X Tiger. Never used Leopard. Looks nice. Competition FTW.

I'm just not seeing the faster thing. Let's hope they get 4.0.2 out soon and fix the processor hogging, blank screens and just plain weird behaviors that were not there in the beta.

Safari 4 has worked very well for me so far. It is faster and more responsive than 3 or the Beta. I don't have iLife '09 so the update is not a big deal to me. I will just update it later.

This fix does not address an outstanding issue with the release version of the browser which is really bizzare. If you have a Mac with dual-screens and use the Fast User Switching function then the next time you log back onto your account and scroll a Safari 4.0 window then the colours fade to almost black and white. Moving the Safari window to the other display and then back again sorts out the problem. It's a really weird one and something that wasn't present in any of the prior betas of the software.
