iTunes 8.2 preps for new iPhone firmware

by Seth Rosenblatt

Earlier today, Apple updated iTunes to get it ready for the anticipated iPhone firmware upgrade to version 3.0. The company also updated its QuickTime video player.

iTunes 8.2, for Windows and Mac, makes the program ready for the iPhone and iPod Touch operating system upgrade by pushing out changes made to recent prerelease versions of iTunes that had been available to only iPhone developers. It also includes one security fix.

Quicktime 7.6.2, for Windows and Mac, contains several security fixes, including patches for holes that could have been exploited to run arbitrary code by maliciously created PSD, JP2, and some movie files.

Seth peers into the deep, dark corners of software so that you don't have to. He has yet to suffer a single nightmare about OS/2. You can follow him on Twitter.

Just started to download it. 80MB download. I wonder if they are ever going to rewrite/updates iTunes to improve performance.

Can't wait for the IPOD Touch update.

The new iTunes update probably also disable the Palm Pre's ability to sync with iTunes??!! :-)

Quite probably. It appears that Palm as gone nuts and decided to implement a syncing function that Apple almost certainly has not sanctioned and will find issue. The genius of the current implementation is also going to be its downfall - Palm is disguising a non-iPod device as an iPod, at least as far as iTunes is concerned. This gives the Pre the ability to sync with iTunes just like an iPod would (probably like a Shuffle, since DRMed video won't play on it) and that makes it good for existing iTunes users. However, because the Pre is effectively masquerading as an iPod I can see Apple having trademark issues with the implementation and taking steps to protect their trademark. What this means, of course, is that this form of sync will be broken in the future, Palm will probably blame Apple and Pre owners will be the ones that suffer.

I'm not taking sides on this one but I will say that implementing something like this without the approval of Apple (making the reasonable assumption that Apple didn't OK this) is not a sensible thing to do with a product that you are effectively betting the business on. That said, I've not seen official materials from Palm indicating that this sync function is official, as far as they are concerned, so perhaps there will be no "official" issue here.

No, it's pretty unlikely that iTunes will ever disable the Pre's ability to sync with it, and there are three good reasons to support that:

First - Apple doesn't mind the revenue that comes from non-iPod users buying DRM-free music from iTunes.

Second - Many, MANY other MP3 players already sync with iTunes and will continue to, whether natively per Apple's list of acceptible MP3 players (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2172), or through third-party iTunes plugins for all the other MP3 players out there.

Third - Apple doesn't typically cut off interoperability simply out of spite. You can install Windows on a Mac, for heaven's sake. It's just more profitable.

Don't believe me? Check out the latest from BGR: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/05/30/but-every-phone-can-sync-with-itunes/

I'm not quite so sure that Apple wants Palm users being able to sync music from iTunes. Yes, they could make additional revenue, but then again, that means that people DO NOT have to have an Apple product to use iTunes (they would effectively be losing potential sales on iPods and iPhones). Plus, it also opens up the flood gates for other companies to market phones and other MP3 players that are capable of syncing with iTunes. Next thing you know, iTunes will not be the exclusive domain of Apple's marquee devices (save for the occasional users using third party software, but they're not native like iPods, iPhones and the Pre). Apple will probably weigh down the risk/reward of letting this happen and I think they will ultimately decide that allowing Palm to use their device to sync to iTunes without Apple's consent would be too blatant an infringement on Apple's intellectual property or whatever technical term it's called.

PS---the only reason why Windows can be installed on Macs now is that they are virtually indistinguishable from the hardware perspective. Ever since they switched to the Intel chips, they are actually identical (mostly) to PCs (not so sure, but I think it was possible before the switch to Intel as well). They use virtually the same motherboard, processor, RAM type, video card, etc. The only thing that distinguishes a Mac from a PC is the logo (hardware-wise, that is).

Holy sh*t! People with the good fortune to not need itunes would actually try to get a non-apple device to work with it?!? Clueless.

Brent, your opinion is useless, next time you have a thought..... Let it go....

NYHOW, I don't see why this is such big news, we already know that iTunes gets an update right before the iPod/iPhone... Now if anyone finds any hidden codes for support on a new iPhone or something, THAT would be news (Even tho we all know that there's probably gonna b an new iPhone)

Apple will charge $10 for the OS 3.0 update for the iPod Touch 1st and 2nd gen but, will be free for both the original iPhone and iPhone 3G.
by MrZook June 1, 2009 8:52 PM PDT
free is good. especially since we're all going to be buying tons of new apps on the 3.0 OS

MrZook, I couldn't say so myself, LOL

Because us iPhone users pay at least $70/month for our iPhone.
by CarFreak8394 June 2, 2009 1:32 PM PDT
You don't HAVE to pay for the iPod touch update, Apple just wants you to. There are ways around it, if you get my drift. (;

I don't know what's going on with this new version, but once I installed I installed it, I have a shared folder I don't know where it came from or how to get rid of it. It calls itself "Ty's Limewire shared".

Don't fool yourself - The Areds and the Mblues are eating at the same table and they share their food.

And why not??? They're fishing in the same pool, L0L

(Just that Ared jerjs you around a little more as the extra you pay to dress up a little nicer)
IMHO

I'm having a problem upgrading to iTunes 8.2 on my eMac. It downloads the program but then it freezes at "Running iTunes Installer Script" and won't go any further. Any suggestions?
