Keep your Mac awake for movies

With more and more people watching movies on their wide-screen Macs and Apple TV, it's no secret the computer is starting to move in on traditional DVD, Blu-ray, and other video player territory. If you have a laptop and the right cords, you can even plug your computer into your big-screen TV and enjoy all the glory of the new standalone Hulu for Mac. But while your Mac is great for watching movies, your Mac's sleep feature to save energy has a nasty way of making your screen go dark right in the middle of the show. To keep this from happening, you can go into the preference pane before starting a movie, select Energy Saver, then slide the dial to Never sleep. I admit this isn't a terribly hard process, but I found a download that makes it even easier.

Caffeine

The settings window, though fairly sparse, offers all the settings you need.

Caffeine is a free download that adds a simple icon on the right side of your menubar. When you click it, Caffeine prevents your Mac from going to sleep while you watch your movie. When your movie is over, simply click it again to return to your normal sleep settings. You also can Command-click the icon to bring up settings to set how long you want Caffeine to keep your Mac awake--anywhere from 5 minutes to indefinitely, but it also has 2-hour and 5-hour options for perfect movie-viewing time.

Or just get Windows.

Windows Media Player (and most third-party viewers) automatically suspend screensavers + sleep modes when playing a movie, then re-enable them at the end of the movie.

It just works.

iTunes will also keep the screensaver from starting, but this is talking about flash based videos like when viewing hulu through your browser or their new app. Under these circumstances, Windows Media Player's capabilities, or lack thereof, are not relevant.

You could just get Windows and watch TV or downloaded shows without a problem.

Why would someone switch operating systems when they could simply download this free app. It is useful for more than just movies too.

Why would you download a program just to avoid three mouseclicks before watching a movie?

Most standalone movie players (and WMP) bypass standby/sleep mode when playing a movie, it shouldnt make too long before this software has it too.

Energy Saver can be set not to sleep a Mac for the same two or more hours as Caffeine. The reason I am going to download Caffeine is that my computers are a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. With a menu bar application one does not have to remember to switch back to one's normal settings to save battery life on a laptop.

Unfortunately I have a PC but this is actually a really good idea. True, it's very simple to change one little setting before starting a movie. But, if you watch as many movies as I do then, it's really easy to forget to toggle the setting back.

also, lol @ willengage's comment.

I've been using this for quite a while...its great. Never have to go into Preferences to change it from my default of "Better Battery Life" when taking notes in class or doing other stuff.
