Everything Windows 7 RC

In the week since Microsoft unleashed the release candidate of its Windows 7 operating system, we've had a chance to cut through the buzz to poke, prod, speculate, and evaluate from all angles.

We've walked through Windows 7 RC's more impressive attractions in a photo tour, like the more powerful Taskbar and streaming music to yourself from another PC. We've also created a video to point out changes to device management, search-term highlighting, and the virtual XP mode for running older programs. And for a deeper look at the pluses and minuses, we've drawn up a full, hands-on review. If that weren't enough, we've also reflected on Windows 7's performance after living with it for a few days.

If you do want to try the operating system upgrade for yourself, remember that the download will be available at least through July 2009. While fairly stable, Windows 7 RC is still a work in progress, and as such, could be prone to bugs. It shouldn't be used to replace your operating system yet, but we can offer tips for dual-booting Windows 7 alongside another operating system on the same computer. Or, you can read up on the changes in these stories and pictures and anticipate Windows 7's full release, which Microsoft has finally confirmed will be out in 2009, hopefully in time for the winter holiday season.

What is it with Cnet lately? Every time I read an article about something or system requirements, important details are left out.

Anyway, the Windows 7rc expires June 1,2010. On March 1,2010 Windows 7rc will begin shutting down bi hourly until you install another OS. Whether that be a previous version or the retail of Windows 7.

Scroll down to 'Remember Expiration Dates.' Here's the link............

There I did your homework for you. LOL

Yes, you will see the same notice in the Editor's Note section when you download Windows 7 RC from our site. The same has also been posted in many of the articles linked to from the newsletter. We'll also keep all our readers updated on the expiration date as we approach June 2010, more than a year from now, and after the OS will have been released in full.

Had a very quick play but driver discs that load on XP won't load on W7. For my graphics card and PCI SATA card. Tried to load the drivers manually but no luck.

Also can't wonder why the virgin install loads 45000 files. Why would an OS need that many files?

I have a question though with regards to the touchscreen features. If I have an existing laptop with vista and is touchscreen, would upgrading to windows 7 let me access features such as multiple touch capability?

It depends. Our understanding is that touch screen features should work on Dell?s Latitude XT or HP?s TouchSmart. We're still not certain about other models, but chances are it could be a 'no.' Here are answers to other common questions we've been asked about Windows 7: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10238679-56.html.

After watching the video on dual-booting, I decided to give it a try. I took my time, backed up the important stuff on my external hard drive, and followed the instructions. Absolutely no hitches, no glitches (so far!) and my only complaint is that I can't access programs installed on my XP drive. But I am enjoying the new operating system, which is running great on my HP Pavilion dv2000 w/ 2 gb ram.

Way to go CNET!

I have been running Windows 7 for the last two weeks. I think it's great, and only have had a few compatibility issues , which were solve by Windows 7 built in trouble shooter. I would recommend to any computer enthusiast who is interested in going to the next level.

P.S. You should have at 2 GB of ram memory
