First Look video: Kindle for iPhone

If you don't feel like spending more than $300 on the Kindle 2, Amazon's free Kindle ebook application for the iPhone and iPod Touch may be a much more affordable, if imperfect, solution.

We compared the Kindle 2 and the Kindle application for the iPhone/iPod Touch, and came to the conclusion that the Kindle iPhone application is great for reading short passages, but the Kindle 2 is better for longer reading.

Also, you can't get subscriptions on the iPhone version and you can't buy books from within the application. Still, $359 is a lot to pay for an e-book reader (though the addition of free cellular Web access and a basic Web browser does make the cost slightly more palatable), so the Kindle for iPhone app may still be the preferable e-book reader for people who already have iPhones or iPod Touches

.

For more information about the Kindle for iPhone application, check out our video first look or read our extensive review.

Nothing beats the Kindle 2. I mean NOTHING. If you're a book lover then you should save up the money and invest in a Kindle 2. It's worth it.

I'm totally perplexed by reviewers who prefer grayscale to full color LCD's. I read books on my Palm TX and the contrast on a color screen is much easier to read than "Kindle like" screens without color. Color images just add to the advantages of reading on a device like the iPhone or Palm TX.

The Kindle is outdated already. Software will trump hardware, and ebooks will just be folded into devices like the iPhone.

skshrews I'm sorry to say that but you clearly never saw Kindle. If you would, then you would never ever compare the LCD to eInk

It's clear you have to own a Kindle to appreciate it. I now have both versions, and completely understand why color is an easy sacrific for the long battery life e-ink screens permit. It's nice to see some color illustrations show up in the Kindle iPhone/Touch app, but battery life and the expense of the iPhone's backlit display means it won't ever be a one-sitting cover-to-cover ebook reader. When they figure out how to make a persistant color e-ink screen, or come up with an even better low-energy screen technology I'll be the first to agree with the color-is-better bigots.

It is too bad this app is not available to Canadians in the Apple app store. Also Canadian can't buy Kindle ebooks from Amazon. Canadians can buy ebooks from Shortcovers, and use their iPhone app.

Unless Amazon does something quick for Canadians, I think Amazon will loose it's Canadian market share to Shortcovers. I think the same may hold true for other countries also.

I'm in New Zealand and have managed to get it working. Create a US itunes account by buying an itunes gift card and registering it to a US address. Create a new US amazon account by registering it to a US address - don't have any Canadian addresses assocaiated with it (including credit cards). If you need to buy ebooks then buy yourself a gift voucher using your regular amazon account and redeem it on your US account.
