Google Sync pushes contacts, calendars to phones

On Monday mobile phone users, including those with Apple's iPhone, got a new way to sync and access information from the cloud. Called Google Sync, the new service lets you sync up both calendars and contacts from a specified Google account and will send changes over the air--both ways.

The service uses Microsoft Exchange's ActiveSync protocol to get the job done, and because of this can actively push changes as soon as they're made. Previously the only way to get this kind of near-instantaneous change was to sync up an existing Exchange account with Outlook using Google's other synchronization utility, Google Calendar Sync. However, that system did not sync contacts and required users to actively run a software client on a machine that had Outlook running.

Setting up your phone to sync up with Google's servers does not require any special software, however it's worth noting that if you have an iPhone or Windows mobile handset the process will wipe out any existing contacts and calendars from your device. This data loss does not occur on Nokia, BlackBerry, Sony Ericsson, or Motorola devices. Also, users who haven't already begun using Google's contact manager are encouraged to do so, as after syncing it becomes the one place where all of your contacts are stored.

Another small caveat is that the service only currently supports up to five user calendars. Users of Google Calendar who may be used to more than that number may have problems with this solution.

One thing that's missing from the equation is Google's Gmail service, which does not offer a push service. Future versions of Google Sync may add that to the equation. Competitor Yahoo has offered a free (although sometimes flaky) push service for its Web mail since the iPhone's introduction in early 2007.

I can use Gmail as push mail on my Sony Ericsson W610i. So, push mail is available on Gmail as long as your device supports it as well.

Gmail doesn't support push email.

Gmail does indeed support push email, via IMAP IDLE. I get push GMail in Mail.app in Mac OSX

I've used nuevasync for syncing gmail contacts and email with my iPod Touch, and it works very well. I will stay on this path at least until Google offers email via push. Even then, unless nuevasync (free, btw) discontinues the service I'll likely stay using it, since 'it just works'.

Doh! hit send too quickly; nuevasync is used for my calendar and contacts, and yes it still works well :)

Doesn't work for me on iPod touch 2g. Says 'incorrect password', no matter how many times I re-type....

Sounds like you're not the only one with this problem. Keep an eye on this thread: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=2c0d69e02a000136&hl=en

'Twas third-party. Google themselves are providing an exchange server now...

The new thing about it now is that it is available for Windows Mobile and iPhone users as well now, not just BB

YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been using NuevaSyncBeta(which works GREAT), but I feel better keeping it all together in Google. Google is really ramping up with great features that Apple forgot....

Now, if they would allow me to add ATTENDEES when making appts on the iPhone Calendar or the GoogleApp on the iPhone.

In this article it states that Google Sync wipes all your contact but that's not true, at least with Windows Mobile. All you have to do so your contacts are not erased is at the end of the set up before you press finish, go to menu then advanced, under "If there is a conflict " change it from " Replace item on device" to "Keep item on device". That way all your contacts from your phone dont get erase.

YAY! No more Mobileme frustration! I'm so thrilled that I can use over the air push syncing for free! I had cancelled my subscription with mobileme after two months of usage where an error caused all my contacts and calendar to evaporate. Contacts were recovered but calendar? I'm a home user and I don't have Outlook, so my calendar could not be backed up in windows. All my events, gone! So I killed my subscription!

This doesn't mean Googlesync will be absolutely perfect, but at least unlike mobileme, google calendar has an export feature which could be used as a way of backup should things go wrong. I have asked for calendar export on me.com for such a long time.

I believe this is serious competition to Apple's mobileme, for which they will be forced to reduce the price.

Tremendous kudos to Google!

P.S. I don't care much about the lack of push support for gmail on iphone, hourly checking works fine with a regular home user that is me.

Regarding your third paragraph - wiping of contacts and calendars on the iPhone isn't necessarily going to happen, as there's a caveat.

By synching to the MobileMe cloud, one can also sync to the new Exchange Google cloud at the same time for one account on each cloud.

I'm synched to my personal MobileMe account and business Premier Apps Google account for both calendars and contacts as I write. And, I use the Calaboration conduit to connect my Premier calendar to iCal. The whole thing took about 15 minutes to set up and it's working seamlessly, with updates and edits on the iCal/iPhone/web calendar getting synched between 5-15 seconds.

You mention Motorola devices in the article, but it doesn't look like they're supported. Clicking the Motorola link on the Google Sync page just takes you to a page that tells you what you can get--and Google Sync isn't on there.

I have been using Google Sync on my Blackberry storm ever since I got it in November. It had been only one way - now it is working two ways - HOORAY!! It is not, however limited to 5 calendars - I have been syncing 10 calendars without a problem. I have avoided including the contacts since I don't want to merge them - maybe I might try that soon.

Forgot the biggest problem with GoogleSync - the calendar only goes back two weeks - so it will show no events more than 2 weeks ago - and only goes forward 23 weeks - so for those of us who like to use our calendar as a resource for where we have been - it is not as useful.

Bruscol: To solve your calendar problems, use CompanionLink for Google to sync.

You can sync Outlook to Google, or Google to your phone direct (wired though, not wireless).

This is awesome. I just set it up on my iPhone yesterday. I don't see how Apple will be able to charge for MobileMe if others are going to start offering the same thing for free. All Google needs now is to hook up Gmail to this system and it's a real winner.
