Finding your way to the right tax-prep program is almost as complicated as doing the taxes themselves.

In this First Look video, we'll walk you through the pros and cons of the superpopular tax-prep programs TaxCut (by H&R Block) and TurboTax (by Intuit.) The differences between them add up to more than just looks and cost.

Jessica Dolcourt reviews the latest and greatest smartphone apps, in addition to a healthy dose of Windows software. E-mail Jessica and follow her on Twitter.

Has anyone tried FileLater.com to file a tax extension online? Seems pretty simple, and I get paranoid that mailing a paper extension will get "lost in the mail" vs. e-file you know the IRS gets it.

There's no way I'm going to get my taxes done by April 15... so I would like to file an extension now, then TurboTax or TaxCut later.

You can file for the extention in TaxCut. But if you owe taxes you will still have to pay them by the April 15th deadline. You should always mail your taxes certified mail.

I have used TaxAct for 10 years now and have tried both TurboTax and TaxCut before. for me TaxAct is the better of the three and was ranked number three by IRS. TaxAct has always had option of FREE and to download software for use on computer but I have been using the $9.95 version with FREE E-File always available.

I've been using Taxcut for at least 12 years now. It's very good although it was better when it was known as Kipplingers Taxcut. Turbo Tax does not find all of the things you could possibly use to get a better return. The whole reason I started using Taxcut was that it got me a bigger return.

Does anyone know if they've changed their minds and decided to include Schedule D (for 1099-DIV) into TurboTax DELUXE?

Good idea but the young lady that presented it, spoke too rapidly and I was not able to follow her completely .

I have used both Turbo Tax and Tax Cut. Turbo was a disaster in handling distributions from Trusts while Tax Cut did OK there but prevented me for e-filing in the way that it handled RMD distributions from IRA's.
Both have their flaws.
