The beta of Windows 7 shows off Microsoft's most innovative operating system in years. Everything from the look to the guts has been overhauled. A completely revamped taskbar changes the way you'll interact with your programs for the better, and nobody will be complaining about the faster boot time, the faster program launch time, and the improved resource management.

In this First Look video, I'll give you a quick overview of what Windows 7 beta can do and how to use it. The only problem? Having to wait until summer for the official release.

Seth peers into the deep, dark corners of software so that you don't have to. He has yet to suffer a single nightmare about OS/2. You can follow him on Twitter.

Well, this sorta depends from the computer you are using to test it. It would be a lot diferent to test Windows 7 on a IBM from the 98's to using a Next-Gen computer from this year. This kinda depends on wats inside the computer, so that is not left for the OS to be decided. Wat does depend on the OS is the amount of information, data, programs, u name it, that can be all be runned at once without blasting the computers processors(did I write it right? XD). Well, I have to go with u when u say that it will be great. Even so, I expected this to be Windows vista, not Windows 7. I think most of wat Ive said is correct, but I might be wrong, I am only 15 years old after all, and am only gettin started on computers. Can make computer animations and I think this Windows 7 will help massively improve my macromedia flash CS4 preformance. Mmmh,,, I guess that is it.

Awesome, Very Awesome! Although Microsoft should provide this free of charge to Vista owners.

Think of it as 'Vista', being just that, a 'vista': "A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening", and Windows 7 is actually reaching what was seen in that 'Vista'.

Plus it would do some much needed good for Microsofts PR.

I totally agree. Vista isn't that old yet...so many users that got it preinstalled on their computers will be left with a broken OS. It would be a much needed PR boost for Microsoft to let this be an update to Vista users.

Tom's Hardware did a benchmarking on Vista vs. Windows XP and on professional design applications like 3DstudioMax, Catia, Maya, and Solidworks Vista was between 12 - 20x slower than Windows XP. The opinion and initial testing by special effects studios, design firms, and engineering groups is critical. If they find in testing that a new OS is 12x slower at running applications that are essential to design - then they miss their deadlines and lose money. If Windows7 is faster than Windows XP at running Maya or Solidworks - then I will upgrade. Intel corporate made the intelligent decision to not install Vista.

Hi!

I'm seriously thinking about transferring to Windows 7 beta, obviously I am planning to have a backup of all my important data, but I was wondering can somebody tell me is there any issues with drivers and games in this beta version?

Thanks.

Been running it since the day Windows 7 came out, I have had no problems at all with any games(Fallout3,Bioshock,WOW) or drivers and I am running the 64 bit W7 beta, also running brand new hardware Core i7 computer with DDR3 and a ATI 4850 GPU

Carrick,
Been using Windows 7 myselfand have actually seen VAST improvement in game response. One game I have, which runs too slow to play on my laptop on XP, runs far better on 7. I can even turn alot of graphics options up.

Hi, I have Vista home SP1 installed, do I have to install SP2 before I upgrade to Windows 7 beta I have not seen any writeup's about this.
Cheers
Peter

lol, no you don't. if you install vista sp2 and then instal windows 7, windows 7 will pretty much erase sp2 for vista.
by gabeheim January 18, 2009 6:34 AM PST
Peter, don't install win7 over vista. If you want to beta test, create a new partition (if you have disk space) or use a spare disk if you have one. Second, if you aren't familiar with the ms windows upgrade/install process (the question regarding sp1 leads me to think this), you should hold off unless you want to spend some time learning about how it works first. At any rate, don't do it on your main partition/HD.

Of course, if anyone wants to create a duplicate image of their vista partition and install win7 to see how well upgrading works (is it more resistant the upgrade cruft hell that windows experiences), by all means have fun.
by warzhell January 18, 2009 1:03 PM PST
No, I upgraded from sp1 64 bit and all my programs work fine
by hardwaretrends January 17, 2009 6:51 AM PST
what about the hardware recommendation for this operating system? if this operating system is a fast operating system than vista, then if i will upgrade my windows xp to windows 7, do i still have to upgrade my harware? im using a intel pentium 4, 1 gb of ram, 80 gb of hdd and a 450 watts power supply.. and only video graphics accelerator.?

You should do what I did. If you have a second or external hard drive use Vista's back up software and create a complete system back up. Then upgrade to Windows 7 and if you end up not liking it just throw your Vista disc in and do a complete system restore. You start from where you left with Vista. If you want to start off with a fresh install I would recommend running a complete back up as well as a regular back up for the files you want to restore into Windows 7 because you cannot restore individual files from a complete system back up.

I have run it now on A Athlon 64 3500+ 2.20 single core and it ran great also on a Athlon 64 3800 x2 and a Centrino2 and My new Core i7 with no problems at all. :)
by evolvd-studios-manager January 19, 2009 3:38 PM PST
Well, I think u have a good point. I have a Custom Dell Desktop computer, I have a 2 changeable 1 terabyte harddrives (that is 2000gigabytes, and I have like 60% used up!), have 2 gigabyte ram, and now have windows XP cuz vista simply sucked. I expected moar. I think this should be enough to run it.
by January 17, 2009 9:10 AM PST
What would happen if I don't care for it. Could I uninstall it and go back to my SP2 that is installed now? I also have Vista on an Acer PC that I bought last year and did not care for. Can I install 7 beta on it? b

Yeah. . .to those of you saying 7 should be free, don't be so dumb. Vista is a decent OS and even though it didn't live up to the expectations set by everyone, it doesn't mean that it's broken and those who bought it deserve a replacement free of charge. I've bought products that didn't do exactly what I thought they would do. I didn't ask for replacements because they weren't broken- they just weren't what I expected. Live with it and move on.

And I'm not saying I wouldn't mind getting 7 for free, there's just no reason that it should be given away for free.

1) don't compare tangible products with not so tangible products such as software. MS's costs if it were to issue a free update are small, and if they offered it for free, they would most likely charge $10 or so for shipping and handling which will cover the cost, leading the tangible cost to be nearly $0. You can't do the same with a chevy, you have to work metal for that.

2) MS committed blunders with vista. they released a product that really wasn't ready and they haven't entirely fixed it. Win 7 is supposed to be that fix. If they want to impress their customers, they had better release it as a free upgrade to vista. If they have the hubris not to do this because of their size, well, then they are going to lose a lot of consumer confidence. MS should probably just cancel vista sp2 and issue win 7 in place of it for vista users. It's cheaper and it will give them a huge return in positive image.
by evolvd-studios-manager January 19, 2009 3:41 PM PST
Okey, 2 things to take in mind with this:
*Number one, MICROSOFT IS TOO CHEAP AND WOULD NEVER HAVE OFFERED WINDOWS 7 FREE.
*Number two, Windows Vista sucked. I can say it all by telling you that it was just a windows XP with fancy change of look.

Soo...I think tha W7 should be free, but for all of u, KEEP DREAMING. this will be in like 15 years when it becomes history
by grittygrim2 January 17, 2009 3:19 PM PST
it is great that 7 runs faster but the features he mentioned like "show desktop " and the preview window stuff is not really necessary in my opinion. vista has a lot of unnecessary stuff now they want to give us new versions of the unnecessary stuff . it ok if you use that stuff regularly but the minimize button work just fine. 7 should be free for those who have vista. especially if it runs more efficiently

I'm just worrying about the preinstallations of my Dell. If my computer crashes or I just want to have a clean system, do I have to install vista, then SP1 and then again the Windows 7? It takes a lot of time don't you think... so I don't like upgrades at all but...!

Why not selling the upgrade (from vista) and new windows 7 package with the same price label? It's a small favour for vista users who want a new windows on their desktop

Hi,

I upgraded my OS from XPSP2 to Windows 7. The RAM is just 512 MB. But it works awesome. One significant matter that I noticed is the speed.

a. boots quickly
b. opens programs faster.
c. ie8 works faster than ie7 and mozilla
d. any third party software installation, the process is quick when cpmparing with xp and vista.
e. accepts vista native drivers for 3rd party devices and other basic devices,
f. look is awesome.

I am happy with this and looking for the original release.

I think that Windows 7 is better than Windows Vista, but I think that Microsoft should still think about the users with older computers, like me.

Most people will rather stick to Windows XP for another 4 years than buying a new computer. Heck, Windows XP isn't bad at all either.

So either Microsoft should produce a fourth Service Pack for Windows XP to keep the older computer users protected and supported, or they should release a version of Windows 7 which is cheap and runs on older system specifications, such as 256MB RAM and a 2.66GHz Pentium 4 processor.

XP does need to die. It has been bent over backwards and broken numerous times.

It would probably be better if win 7 were modular enough to operate on a p4 with 512mb, with similar performance to xp and minimal aero features. Believe me, it can be done, just look at what MacOS and linux do with older machines. MS assumed for too long that moore's law == higher clock speed, which is no longer true (only double transistor density, and it's a trend, not a law). MS is finally starting to wise up to that, which is indicated by their attempts to develop a minwin environment (not in win7).

From what I heard, Windows is developing a "netbook" version of this... which might run on your comp =)

~Also, I would bet that if you upgraded ur ram, it would run fine for everyday tasks.
by evolvd-studios-manager January 19, 2009 3:43 PM PST
Uve got a strong point, and yeah, U have nobody pushing u to install Windows 7. U can stay with XP, and till now, it has been the best ever windows OS that has been released.
by SkateNY January 18, 2009 2:50 AM PST
I'm testing it too. Problem is, it's still Windows, and it's still Windows Vista Lite. Doesn't support a great deal of legacy hardware and software. Microsoft needs start over instead of building on failed ventures.

yeah, about the hardware, if windows 2007 was said to be running faster than vista, it must also be compatible with such a older computer with only a minimum specification. If i will use windows 7, and my hardware is not compatibel with it, maybe i will just stick to windows xp than to buy a new hardware for my computer, its just a waste of money. But i like to use and try windows 7. Im still thinking if i will be using windows 7 or stick to windows xp. I hope that windows 7 will be able to run in pentium 4 3.20 ghz, 1gb of ram, and no video card. For vista, it is recommended that you put a video card atleast a 32 mb. But i dont want to put any video card on my computer because it will be needing a lot of power (depending on the video card)..

Aren't you eventually going to have to buy new hardware anyway? I mean if you keep using your old legacy hardware, there will be a point when nobody supports the hardware because it's so outdated. Eventually it will cost you more when the old hardware fails due to it's age. A low end video card that works for Vista and Win7 will not use a lot of power either. But the key word is recommended, you can survive without one.

Sorta. If we are all computer users, we have the strong weight of big companies making us and laying pressure down on us to spend more money on they software so their pockets get filled with millions. Right now, I suggest that anyone with cheap pockets should stay with windows XP. This is a very good OS and probably the best that has ever come out. If u have enough money, well, u can get W7 or W vista. This is up to you.
by warzhell January 18, 2009 1:01 PM PST
To be 100% honest besides the cool new way Aero works I haven't really noticed much of a difference in speed.
Had no problems running Vista 64bit and 32bit on both my Quad and dual core computers.
I run art program's like bryce and artweaver and I am a heavy gamer and haven't seen any real gain or loss of power.
I would switch just on the fact that I like the new way the task bar works and Areo in general under Windows 7.

why the vista hate? it works fine on a new(er) computer, secure with 2 way firewall, Xp has just one, and the internet isnt what it used to be 5 years ago, software souch as browsers need to evolve and cant run on a 5 year old hardware - for people who would spend 400e on a new OS shoud radher buy or upgrade their hardware and use FREE os such as linux if they are too stingy to spring for bouth!!

i try Microsoft's Windows 7 os it is awesome. right now i am using Windows Xp i also tried out vista but windows 7 is speedy looks good . in beta release windows7 win it's 75% journey.
Because u do not have to install drivers for most of hardware it will detect auto & install drivers for same.
so u no need to find driver cds for printer, scanner, or else.
