MySpace app for BlackBerry: Is RIM getting hip?

MySpace BlackBerry page

Article updated 11/13/08 at 11:15 am to include more details.

Two months ago, MySpace and Research In Motion announced a joint effort to create a rich native freeware app for MySpace on BlackBerry phones. On Thursday, RIM made MySpace for BlackBerry globally available. You can also download it from the BlackBerry browser when you point to www.blackberry.com/myspace.

Unsurprisingly, the functions and feel of this BlackBerry'd MySpace application have been modeled on RIM's Facebook app for BlackBerry, which has been going strong for about a year.

Navigating from icons at the top of the app, you'll be able to view your home screen, messages, friends, and photos. You can also change your status and mood, manage friend requests, and add comments.

Launching the BlackBerry's camera to take new pictures, caption them, and then update them to your MySpace page is the application's best feature by far and the mobile platform's only real additional contribution.

One thing you should be aware of--you'll only be able to get messages pushed to your phone if the address associated with your MySpace account is the same one you're using on your BlackBerry.

Although it's a good app for the active MySpace contingent, it's also missing the personal flavor that makes MySpace so beloved to its fans.

The application, however, is only one part of the story. Along with the RIM-and-MySpace love affair comes a community page on MySpace that acts as a full-time ad for BlackBerry users to geek out and soak in the BlackBerry branding. It's an ingenious effort to peddle brand loyalty to the MySpace generation using exclusive wallpapers and product teasers, a discussion board and a list of MySpace 'friends' as bait.

The bubbly, urban new look may not wrest young users away from their iPhones, but it certainly will help blunt the BlackBerry's image as a stuffy business device, without actually driving away business users. Strategic campaigns for the upcoming touch screen Storm phone and the BlackBerry Pearl Flip have a chance at doing the rest if the games, skins, ringtones, and other giveaways prove urban-cool enough.

Its so cute how RIM tries to compete with Apple, i think Google Android has a better shot at success with the myspace program with the G1 atleast. i guess im alittle bias cause i think the touch screen generation is just fantastic for every program. its so easy to use. But go RIM. i know im jumping around but i love the BOLD! if i didnt have a iphone i would be all over that. I love Technology!

For pure functionality, BB has been ahead of the iPhone. It doesn't have the cool factor, but it definitely has the same functionality and more. I had streetview on my BB months before the iphone. I have free voice turn by turn directions. I have google voice search which the G1 and iPhone are lacking. The Bold's screen is far superior to the iphone. The list goes on and on. If people knew what the BB could actually do, some of them might not lock themselves in with an Apple product. Now if touch screen is your thing, then the Storm fills that spot.

Are there really that many 12-year-olds out there with Blackberries? (Are there really that many people out there still using MySpace?)

There are a lot of young kids with blackberries. The other day I saw a 10 yr old with a blackerry. I really don't understand it. I thought they were for business people. There really should be an age limit for those things.

It's almost as bad as seeing the little ones with the bluetooth headsets!

obviously you thought wrong and you need to get your head out of your behind because todays blackberries are for everyone...stay at home moms included. Who cares who owns a blackberry. Merely suggesting an age limit on a blackberry shows how incredibly narrow minded you are...you should get with the times mister.

I wonder if you can design myspace layouts for iphone / android / g1 phones like you can for the web version like these layouts:

If you have blackberry camera phone and a myspace account, then Mosnaps is a must have app. It is the cool factor for photos. Mosnaps geo-codes all photos and I can post to my blog, myspace, picasa, flikr and website. Check it out mosnaps.com. I love it and it saves me a lot of time for my pictures to move from my BB to Myspace. I tried it, you should too.

i am waiting for my storm in the mail but my current phone is lg chocolate2. I send my photos directly to my myspace mobile folder. Is this mosnaps similar or can you do more than that. they have it setup on myspace through mobile. you just set up the address and add to your contact list and whenever you take a pic send it to that address and it is auto added to your mobile album.

I am looking forward to using the myspace app for my blackberry when I get it in the mail. I am 30 years old and have been using myspace for years to keep in touch with friends I went to school with. I use my laptop but it would be great when on the go and I don't have access to computer such as traveling. I am curious as to if i will be able to post blogs from my berry..such as when on vacation and want to write at the time what it going on. I hope they have this feature. God bless blackberry storm!

actually mosnaps is lot cooler than that. I don't like emailing because you cannot enter tags, caption, description and album. Plus it does not geo-code photos. With mosnaps you can do all that and organize photos on the fly. Take a look at their demo www.mosnaps.com

This article would only make sense if hip were at all associated with Myspace. Speaking as a college student and even as a young professional, no one uses MySpace anymore. In fact, most people my age hate it. Its facebook, facebook, facebook.

That being said, I see a huge number of Blackberry phones on campus and even more at work. I must say though, the iPhone or cheaper phones like the Envy 2 are much more popular. I'm interested to see if the Storm or G1 take off.
