Featured Freeware: SlimBrowser

by Seth Rosenblatt

If you're in the market for a remix of Internet Explorer--perhaps you need it to work on an internal office network--an interesting alternative is SlimBrowser, whose name belies its feature set. SlimBrowser's tabbed interface allows you to look at multiple Web sites all at once. It looks and feels more or less like its more popular competitors, so the learning curve isn't as steep as you might think.

The basics are all present and accounted for: effective pop-up blocker, more than 100 skins that don't require restarting, and support for most of IE's toolbars and plug-ins. One of the more unique features is a shortcut menu that lets you browse your Desktop, My Documents folder, and the Control Panel from the browser window. There's a neat little pop-up recovery feature, too, in case you missed one that was not a pernicious advertisement.

The RSS reader was a bit wonky to configure, but the online forum has a deep knowledge base. SlimBrowser is recommended for those who need a bit of variety in their Web surfing.

Seth;

Your article has piqued my interest. Unfortunately, I only understood about 1/2 of what you said. The rest of it went right over my head, so I will have to bow out from giving it a try.

Also, the last time I tried to download FF3.0 w/0 deleting IE7, my system locked up, so i quickly uninstalled. This made me leery of trying to trying out FF again.

I have used various other beta programs with mixed success and would love to try this one.

looks bloated, overcrowded....i know i can remove bars, button, etc., but initial look is awful.
on top of that, it won't connect to any site...even though it uses my explorer settings and i can connect online with the explorer - no problem there.
waste of time for me...already uninstalled...
i also use alternate browsers ike Deepnet, Browzar, and Hydra, and they work just fine...

I've been using Avant Browser for a couple years and can't imagine switching to anything else. But if I did, I might be interested in giving SlimBrowser a look at.

Use Avant!!!! It's the same thing but better. You can even view web pages side by side.
