Featured Freeware: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective antimalware tool. And, for what it's worth, it's mighty popular. It's a relatively speedy malware remover, with the quick scan taking about 10 minutes. The heuristics engine proved on multiple computers during empirical testing that it was capable of determining the difference between false positives and dangerous apps.
The app has some nice features rolled in, too. It supports multiple drive scanning, context menu options including a scan-on-demand for individual files, and the FileAssassin option under the More Tools section for removing locked files. This can help remove malware files that are so insidious that you can't delete them merely by hitting the Delete key.
The interface is simple, but pleasant-looking and well-organized. Tabs live just below the oversized logo, with few options per tab to keep down the clutter. The installation process was fast enough, but interestingly offered up the well-kept changelog and an instant definition file update. Do note that the real-time protection is restricted to the paid version, as is the scheduler for updates and scans. Overall, though, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a responsive malware remover that does what it should with a minimum of fuss.
Seth peers into the deep, dark corners of software so that you don't have to. He has yet to suffer a single nightmare about OS/2. You can follow him on Twitter.
Also its really fast, thats for sure.
SInce it is mostly written in Binary Code, it is tricky to remove 100% from a PC.
After uninstalling it, restart. Even though it does not prompt you to. The restart after the SpyBot uninstall is not manditory, but is a good practice to do. This will lock the registry, since it is a form of security. SpyBot will add a startup tracer string to the Microsoft Configuration that monitors ALL Internet activity, but does not send PC or personal information to third parties. Even if connection is idle this happens. This will occur with SpyBot even if you restart or not. It is a 32 digit code starting with a "362" series. If you do unistall SpyBot, make sure to find this startup tracer string after you restart the PC and delete it from the registry. It will not hurt or damage your registery so do not worry. (All OS). Delete it and all of it's sub-folders and restart.
That Trojan is in the same section (just an FYI) of the registry and is called "Antivirus 2008". I found this one last year coming in from another country. After an International virus is detected, it is unable to be blocked 100% because it deteriorates and reforms at a pre-designated spot. Luckily I tracked the persons activity and deleted his hard drive two hours after it entered.
My friend created SpyBot years ago for his first "real-project" and has moved on greater things since. I, myself, am a MS IT Engineer for a Federal Government Security firm. We monitor the Internet usage for all fifty states and track the suppliers of Malware and Spyware viruses. Cannot mention the firm name. Keep up the good work in the IT "world".
