How to completely turn off parallax wallpapers on iOS 7.1

Apple's iOS 7 launched with a revamped design and new features galore. Not all features were welcomed, with some users pleading for the ability to revert back to iOS 6 or turn off some of the more "annoying" features. One such feature was the motion found throughout iOS 7, including the motion found on wallpaper images across all home screens.

Apple did provide a method for reducing the motion effect, but not a way to disable it across the board. With the release of iOS 7.1, the ability to turn off what Apple calls "Perspective … Read more

Create a Ken Burns-style photo project on your iPhone with PhotoMotion

PhotoMotion, from the makers of PhotoToaster, lets you put together a slideshow of images with the popular zooming and panning technique known as the Ken Burns effect, but doesn't offer much else.

There have been a number of apps that duplicated this dramatic style of slow panning over images, but they have often been too complicated or the interface so unintuitive that people simply wouldn't bother. But PhotoToaster, made by the same developers, is one of my favorite photo editors, so I was excited to see how they would handle an entirely different process for creating photo projects. … Read more

Google's Android 4.4.2 KitKat update, launched in October, will now hit a variety of Samsung devices.

The Korean electronics giant said availability of KitKat varies by carrier and product, but updates will begin Tuesday and will continue through the coming months. The Galaxy S4 and Note 3 are among the devices that will now run Google's latest version of its mobile software.

New features of that operating system include a redesigned dialer that allows users to search for any number, even if it's not in their phone books. For example, users can start typing the … Read more

Leaks hint at Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom, Active models

Looks like we might get more than the Galaxy S5 from Samsung in the coming weeks.

The Korean electronics giant plans to release multiple versions of its flagship smartphone, just like it did with the Galaxy S4, according to a couple Asian sites, earlier noted by BGR.

That includes an Active model that's more rugged than the flagship device, according to the Korean language ET News. Samsung also may launch a Zoom model of the Galaxy S5 with strong camera capabilities, BGR said, based on an Indian import database that showed to listings for "SM-C115 Samsung Mobile Camera.&… Read more

Review: Zoom Camera gives your Droid a powerful zoom and a few nifty effects

Zoom Camera lives up to its name with a decent digital zoom and even adds a couple of cool photo effects to boot. Though many of its best filters require a premium upgrade, the app has just enough to please you, especially since most people will download the app just for the zoom anyway. Those features are more than enough to ignore a mediocre menu, as well.

This app adds a digital zoom -- up to 400 percent-- to your smartphone or tablet's camera. This means it will crop out excess parts of the image in order to bring … Read more

Tamron sets price for 150-600mm supertele: $1,069

Tamron will start shipping its SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD starting on January 17 in the US for a price of $1,069, the company said Sunday.

That's not too much higher than the company's $950 AF 200-500mm f/5.0-6.3 Di LD SP lens, which has a more restricted zoom range but no image stabilization. However, greater zoom ranges often come with optical compromises such as worse sharpness, distortion, and chromatic aberration.

The new supertelephoto has a flexible zoom range, though its aperture range of f5 at 150mm to f6.3 at 600mm … Read more

How Samsung can click with its phone-camera move

Samsung's latest shakeup will make for a tighter union of smartphones and cameras. That's bad news for everyone else.

The Korean electronics giant, which reorganizes its businesses annually, this week told Korean media outlets that it plans to fold its camera operations into its wireless business. That will allow it to "integrate the technical know-how of the two business divisions" to differentiate its smartphones. It also will allow Samsung to use insight gleaned from its successful phone push to boost its position in the camera market.

We've contacted Samsung for information and will update the … Read more

Resize windows like a pro in OS X

Starting with OS X 10.7, Apple changed its method for resizing windows. In the Classic Mac OS and through the first six releases of OS X, you had to resize windows using the tab at the bottom-right of the window; however, with OS X Lion Apple changed this behavior to give resizing controls along all edges of application and document windows.

What this means is in most cases, instead of having to move the left and top sides of a window to a desired location and then resize the rest accordingly, you can simply resize from the left, from … Read more

Samsung asks judge to halt Apple damages retrial

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Samsung on Wednesday asked a judge to halt the Apple damages retrial, currently under jury deliberation, after the US Patent and Trademark Office said an Apple patent might not be valid.

According to court documents, the Patent Office questioned whether Apple patent No. 7,844,915, also known as "pinch to zoom," is a valid patent. The '915 patent covers technology that can distinguish whether a user is scrolling with one finger versus using several touch points at once for a pinch-to-zoom action.

The Patent Office has been re-examining the claims of the '915 … Read more

Tamron expands supertelephoto range with 150-600mm zoom

Tamron announced a new 150-600mm lens Thursday, a supertelephoto that will bring a broad 4x zoom range to sports and wildlife photographers.

The Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD is designed for Canon, Nikon, and Sony full-frame SLRs, the Japanese lensmaker said. The company will continue to sell its SP AF200-500mm F/5-6.3 Di LD IF, which has a narrower zoom range than the new model and lacks its vibration compensation (VC) technology to counteract camera shake.

The company didn't say when it would ship or how much the 150-600mm model would cost, but doubtless … Read more
