FiiO's nifty $200 portable high-resolution music player is a knockout

I've used an iPod Classic as my on-the-go music player for years, while I was waiting for something better. Sure, Astell & Kern has two perfectly fine players, the $699 AK100 and the $1,299 AK120, but FiiO smashed the high-resolution music player price barrier with the X3, which lists for $299, but which sells for $200 on Amazon and most other online retail sites.

I've favorably reviewed FiiO products before, so I had some reason to expect the X3 would be pretty decent, but it's way better than that. Granted, the X3 can't match the … Read more

Review: Painter X3 brings an array of complimentary tools for inspiring artists

On Tuesday, Corel released a major update to its Painter series. Painter X3 brings several tool upgrades that include advanced brush behaviors, native search for quick tool access, and multilayer transformations.

The majority of Painter's tools are geared toward the traditional illustrator; Corel's recent updates showcase an impressive array of brush tools that better emulate the physics of their real-life counterparts. For example, watercolors will spread and leave dry marks as a liquid-based paint would behave on a textured medium.

Though Painter's work layout is often compared and contrasted with another certain popular illustration program, Corel has … Read more

Second-generation BMW X3 grows up, slims down

Perhaps it's BMW's fault for cramming so many similarly sized vehicles, between-size variants, and remixed configurations into its lineup, but I had the hardest time deciding if the 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i is too big or too small.

The second-generation vehicle's aesthetic is more wagonlike and it seems to press down into the ground when viewed in the round, which makes it look smaller -- both in photographs and in person -- than the pre-2010 model, which has a more angular, upright design. However, put the models side by side and it becomes apparent that the new … Read more

Best of CES Emerging Tech: 3D Systems CubeX 3D printer

LAS VEGAS--Sight tracking sounds like a new PC interface we might actually use. And anything that helps push wireless charging forward will get our attention. But of all the still-developing technologies we saw at CES, it's the 3D Systems CubeX 3D printer that has us the most excited.

Makerbot announced its own new printer, the Replicator 2X, at this year's show. It's a fine-looking machine, and its print quality looks superb. 3D Systems got the nod for a nomination because its CubeX does things we haven't seen before in a consumer-approachable 3D printer.

The CubeX … Read more

MAKUHARI, Japan--Toshiba has been showing off a dazzling 55-inch glasses-free 3D TV here at the Ceatec technology trade show ahead of its December release in Japan and Germany, and people are queuing for half an hour to see it.

The Regza 55X3 has a QFHD (Quad Full HD) screen with 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. That's about 8.29 million pixels, four times that of full HD, and quite a leap from previous 3D Regza models. It will be the world's first 4K TV for the consumer market.

The screen can switch to 2D mode with the … Read more

PaintShop Pro X4 simplifies the complex

PaintShop Pro X4 is the latest release in Corel's popular line of photo management and editing software. This newest version brings with it a more polished interface, GPU optimizations, and a significant boost in terms of professional editing power.

The interface is fairly simple to navigate, with all of the program's functionality falling under three main tabs at the top of the screen: Manage, Adjust, and Edit.

The Manage tab is, of course, the hub for organizing all of your photos. In addition to all of the expected browsing and preview utilities, it includes a nifty Info palette … Read more

Trendnet to ship first 450Mbps true dual-band router

Announced at CES 2011, Trendnet's first true dual-band 450Mbps Wireless-N router--the 450Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless-N Router, model TEW-692GR--is now about to be available for purchase, the company said today.

Unlike other 450Mbps dual-band routers, such as the Cisco Linksys E4200, which offers the higher 450Mbps speed only on the 5GHz frequency, the TEW-692GR is the first that also offers this higher speed on the 2.4GHz band at the same time.

Note that you'd need a wireless client that also supports the new 3x3 450Mbps standard to take advantage of the higher speed. An example would be … Read more
