The most anticipated games of 2014

Will 2014 be the year when next-generation consoles hit their stride? The following 12 months after a console launch are always very telling, but for now all we can do is wait.

Putting the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 aside, there's still plenty of gas left in the tanks of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We're still very much in the middle of their respective golden ages, and a lot of the games on this list will see releases on those platforms as well.

If there's anything I've learned from doing this list for the … Read more

The 15 best video games of 2013

2013 was a major year for video games. Some of the generation's most anticipated titles finally had their day in the sun. But alas, only a select few games can be mentioned in the "best of" conversation.

Sure, 2013 was a standout year for blockbuster titles, but it was also the stage for a smattering of independent games and their small development teams.

So which titles made this year's list? Check out the gallery for the top 15. Not seeing your favorite game of 2013? Yell at me about it in the comments section below.

Study: 40 hours of complex StarCraft is good for the brain

Playing 40 hours or Starcraft, the real-time strategy game pitting humans and two alien species against each other, can make people think more flexibly.

So concludes a study this month that compared groups of people who played The Sims, StarCraft with easier conditions, and StarCraft with harder conditions that required players to keep track of a more complicated scenario.

"Real-time strategy gaming selectively promotes cognitive flexibility, particularly under conditions in which players must rapidly switch between contexts while maintaining memory for both contexts," concluded authors Brian D. Glass of the University of London, W. Todd Maddox of the … Read more

Disney tries to revive its digital gaming with 'Disney Infinity'

Disney is looking to boost its digital unit, and to do so it has reportedly thrown more than $100 million toward a new project called "Disney Infinity," according to The Wall Street Journal. This comes after abysmal earnings and hundreds of layoffs over the past couple of years.

The project will feature video games from many of Disney's TV shows and major movies like "Cars," "Pirates of the Caribbean," and "The Incredibles." The games will work similarly to a choose-your-own-adventure scenario. They are designed for players to be able to create … Read more

Why next-gen consoles won't run games at 4K

Back in March, Microsoft's CVP of Marketing and Strategy Yusuf Mehdi told Forbes that the Xbox One would support 4K gaming, saying that there was "no hardware restriction there at all".

However, some testing from AnandTech suggests that while that statement might be technically accurate, whether it's playable or not might be a different matter.

At Computex, AnnadTech's Ian Cutress got his hands on a 4K monitor and decided to run some gaming benchmarks and see what happened.

Testing across Sleeping Dogs and Metro 2033, it took four of Nvidia's GTX Titan graphics cards … Read more

Strewth! Aussie accent confirmed for Mad Max game

One of the surprise announcements of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) was an open-world action-adventure game set in the same post-apocalyptic universe of the Mad Max film series. There was just one problem: Max had a generic American accent. Deliberately so.

One of the Australian journalists shown the game, Stephen Farrelly from AusGamers, was less than impressed, and quickly kicked off an online petition to give Max back a proper "Strine" sound.

This morning, Christofer Sundberg, founder and executive producer of Avalanche Studios, capitulated to the fan outcry. He tweeted:

Attn. fans who want Max to have an … Read more

The intersection of sports and video games has rendered countless popular titles and is easily one of the medium's most popular genres.
