Is wearing Google Glass to propose insane? Watch this and decide

Proposing marriage to your significant life-partner -- or even to Olga, the snake-charmer you met in a bar last week -- ought to be memorable.

You never know how many times in life you'll get to suggest marriage, while down on one knee, so it's worth preserving in your mind.

Should you enhance that need for preservation, though, by wearing glasses that make you look like an institutionalized escapee?

In order to celebrate Valentine's weekend -- yes, the one in which many couples choose to break up -- Google released a video that may live long in … Read more

Happy Valentine's Day, from Mars

Mars loves us. And how do we know? Because it's covered in heart-shaped features that are obviously there to tell us how much we're loved by our red neighbor.

Today, as a special NASA Valentine, the space agency shared a set of photographs of the various Martian hearts, images it gathered over three Martian years, and first published on Valentine's Day 2004.

The imagery was gathered by the Mars Global Surveyor Mars Obiter Camera team.

Among the photographs are hearts located in various Martian mesas and depressions.

The imagery may be more than ten years old, but … Read more

Lovey-dovey detection algorithm puts hearts on Google+ photos

For Valentine's Day, Google is adding animated hearts to photos of hugging and kissing on Google+.

"Just upload a photo of kissing or hugging, and Google Photos will add hearts automatically," said Google+ photo team member Vincent Mo in a Google+ post Thursday night.

Google already throws a lot of server horsepower at photos shared on its social network, automatically editing them for better tonality and smoother skin, but its "auto-awesome" technology also identifies subject matter deemed suitable for seasonal special effects. During the holidays, the company added snowflakes to snow scenes and sparkling to … Read more

Google gets romantic with Chromecast fireplace visualizer

Nothing sets the mood like a toasty virtual fireplace, at least in theory.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Google has launched a kitschy little feature for Chromecast -- it's a virtual fireplace visual that can be displayed while streaming music to a television, computer, phone, or tablet.

"When you listen to Google Play Music on your Chromecast, you can display a cozy fireplace on your TV while your music plays in the background. And yes, it's just as awesome as it sounds," Google wrote on Google+. "So stay in, sit back, and crank … Read more

Mushy love e-mails. Giant boxes of chocolates. Teddy bears holding red satin hearts. Valentine's Day can be enough to make any self-respecting geek run screaming from society. The objections are many. Perhaps you're single. Maybe you disapprove of it as a "manufactured holiday." Maybe you don't think love can be expressed with the same greeting card that thousands of other people are giving to the objects of their affection.

It's OK to say "no." You don't have to participate in the schlocky madness. Take some suggestions from our handy guide to geeky ways to avoid dealing with the dreaded V-Day.… Read more

Forget roses -- use Uber to order skywriting on Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is approaching, and we know what that means: another off-the-wall promotion from Uber.

The on-demand car service is adding the ability to order skywriting messages from its app for select cities on Friday.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. there will be an "UberSKY" option on the app for users in New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Dallas. If you get a confirmation, an Uber rep will call you and take down your message, which can be up to 12 characters long.

The splashy Valentine's Day promotion is part of a … Read more

10 must-see videos of the week

As the Sochi Winter Olympics officially kick off this week, we're checking out some of the same technology Olympic organizers are relying on to generate snow at a resort in Lake Tahoe. These automated snowmaking systems (some of which can even be operated from a mobile phone) are making it easier and more efficient to make snow when Mother Nature doesn't want to cooperate.

Prizefight is also back at it with an epic rematch between the Roku 3 and third-generation Apple TV. It's been a year since their previous duel and both Editors' Choice streaming boxes have … Read more
