Apple devices said to get free in-flight movies on United

Word has it that iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will soon get to access more than 150 movies and about 200 TV shows for free when flying on United Airlines, according to Patently Apple.

Come April, the airlines is said to be rolling out an update to its iOS app that will come with the added feature of an in-flight movie service. To get the purported service, users must be running iOS 7. For those with Macs, Patently Apple reports that no app is necessary to get the in-flight service.

The movie service is said to only be available for … Read more

Drone deliveries get off the ground in Dubai

People's jaws dropped at the idea of Amazon using drones to deliver packages to customers in the US, but what about a government using a drone delivery service?

Lenovo-Motorola deal likely to win US regulatory approval but...

Lenovo's purchase of Motorola Mobility should get a green light from US regulators. But the company will have to agree to certain concessions in the name of US national security.

On Wednesday, the Chinese computer maker announced its $2.91 billion purchase of Google's Motorola mobile phone business and around 2,000 related patents. But like any major acquisition, this one has to go through the regulatory ropes before it's a done deal.

The purchase faces a review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a federal agency that looks out for potential … Read more

United Airlines site loophole reoffers uber cheap fares

For the second time in about a month, a malfunction on United Airlines' Web site is letting customers buy tickets on the cheap. Passengers can take advantage of the error by setting up a "MileagePlus" account and tricking the site into getting them a ticket with frequent-flyer miles they don't have, according to Mashable.

The news site said that it was able to reserve a roundtrip ticket from Newark, N.J., to Dublin, Ireland for $49.40, which covers the cost of taxes and fees. Apparently, the loophole is currently still open.

This isn't the first … Read more

Error on United Airlines Web site results in free fares

For a few travelers earlier Thursday, the United Airlines Web site suddenly became their best friend. That's because for a short period, just about an hour according a Forbes report, United.com was pricing a wide variety of tickets at just $0.

The problem, which reportedly was due to a programming error, started about 11:30 a.m. PT and continued long enough for dozens of people to successfully book the rock bottom fares according to Flyertalk forum. After United noticed the fire sale, it stopped all online booking for at least an hour.

Some users on the forum … Read more

No, the United Airlines Twitter account isn't funny (but this is)

Honestly, how many airlines can offer you Sky Indulgence points to be redeemed during the Cloud Rapture?

And how many would even dare offer "Earhart-class tickets -- cheap, direct international flights consumed by the infinite ocean and never seen again."

They know you have a choice of which airline you fly, so United Airlanes ensures that you get something special with every interaction.

This modern, socially-networked approach doesn't seem to land with everyone.

For some odd reason, people confused this airline with United Airlines, whose offers are somewhat tamer, planes are somewhat less exciting, and service somewhat less memorable.… Read more

Polar bear dons high-tech collar for USGS

It's hard to monitor polar bears in the wild. They live in remote, hard-to-access places. They're also big and bitey.

So researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey decided to kick off a new polar bear-monitoring program in an easier place than the Arctic: the Oregon Zoo.

Tasul is a resident of the zoo and she's a lot easier to get to than her kin in the wild. She's wearing an accelerometer-equipped collar for short periods of time each day while a researcher videotapes her. Data collected from the accelerometer is matched to the video, creating a database of polar bear movements.… Read more
