Fresh iPhone 5 rumors: Modified chip, new body, bigger screen

More next-gen iPhone rumors surfaced today pointing to a modified Apple chip, more memory, new chassis, and a bigger screen.

Display and chassis: Let's start with a report at Business Insider, which cites a research note from Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White (returning from a tour of component suppliers in China). White says the next iPhone will have 4-inch screen and "sleek look that we believe will require a unibody case."

The upcoming iPhone is also expected to have 4G (presumably he means LTE) capability, like the new iPad, according to the analyst.

iFixit tears down new MacBook Pro

When it comes to troubleshooting hardware issues on any computer system, if you plan on getting your hands dirty and messing with the interior of the system, or if you plan on gauging heat or noise issues, then it helps to know where items are located under the hood. To help with this, the folks over at iFixit have developed an extensive library of high-quality teardown guides for many of Apple's products, and have just added one for the new 15-inch MacBook Pro.

While most people (especially new owners with systems under warranty) might not have a reason to … Read more

Hands-on with the Apple MacBook: Fall 2009 Edition

Editor's note: We're currently benchmarking and testing the new Apple MacBook. We'll update this post with a full review later this week.

With the launch of Windows 7 only days away, it's not surprising that Apple would fire a last-minute shot across Microsoft's bow. While the timing may be suspicious, Mac fans are no doubt pleased to see an update to the most popular laptop in the Mac lineup, the $999 polycarbonate white MacBook.

While it's neither the less-expensive entry level MacBook some had hoped for, nor the long-rumored touchscreen device, the new 13-inch … Read more

13-inch MacBook joins Pro family, Air gets updated

Not to be left out, the MacBook's been updated too, and it's no longer just a MacBook. Following in the wake of the 15-inch MacBook Pro updates, the 13-inchers will also be called MacBook Pros (because as Phil Schiller noted onstage, "At what point isn't this just a MacBook Pro?") The mid-range unibody aluminum laptops launched last October now have upgraded color screens, SD card slots, FireWire 800 ports, and backlit keyboards across the board. Prices start at $1,199, $100 less than before for the low-end aluminum MacBook, for an upgraded 2.26 GHz … Read more

Next iPod to have metal unibody design?

According to Macnn, one of Apple's latest patents indicates the company may be looking at a unibody design for the iPod Classic--and possibly other products.

In October of last year, Apple began incorporating unibody designs into its new MacBook and MacBook Pro lines. The "revolutionary" manufacturing process creates a seamless enclosure carved from a single piece of aluminum that makes the final product lighter, thinner, and, according to Apple, sturdier. The unibody design may also help shave manufacturing costs.

It seems logical for Apple to switch to a unibody design for its iPod Classic, which currently uses … Read more

Apple bumps specs of $999 MacBook

Sometime earlier this week, Apple updated its least expensive notebook.

Engadget noticed Wednesday that the white $999 MacBook was slightly--and quietly--upgraded. It now has a newer Intel processor (2.0GHz Core 2 Duo), 2GB of memory, integrated graphics (Nvidia GeForce 9400M), and a faster frontside bus, now 1,066 MHz.

Besides that, almost everything else remains the same. But at $999, it's now much closer to its more expensive, unibody-constructed MacBook cousins.

Unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro reportedly in works

It appears Apple is getting ready to expand its MacBook Pro lineup.

The Mac maker plans to unveil a 17-inch MacBook Pro, possibly as early as this week at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, according to reports on 9to5Mac and AppleInsider. Like the 13- and 15-inch models, the 17-incher is expected to sport a unibody construction. But unlike those smaller models, the new MacBook Pro will have a fixed internal battery, much like the MacBook Air's battery setup, according to the report.

The site also reported that we can expect a Mac Mini makeover that will include the … Read more
