U.S. Cellular unveils shared data plans, kills unlimited data

U.S. Cellular is jumping on the shared data plan bandwagon.

The wireless carrier on Monday introduced shared data plans for consumers and small businesses. The plans line up with similar ones offered by larger carriers Verizon Wireless and AT&T. These latest offerings also spell an end to U.S. Cellular's unlimited data plan.

Shared data plans have proven effective in getting multiple family members to sign up with the same carrier and in limiting the amount of data each member can consume. Consumers can share data among up to 10 devices, while businesses can get up … Read more

U.S. Cellular picks up Samsung Galaxy Mega Sept. 17

Already staking its claim on AT&T, the Samsung Galaxy Mega and its enormous 6.3-inch screen are making a home at U.S. Cellular.

The extra-large "phablet" will sell for a budget $150 on contract, after an instant rebate.

Eager customers can buy it online starting tomorrow, September 17, and those who opt for in-store purchase will find it in carrier shops on September 19.

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Mega has no stylus or extra tricks to spice up Samsung's typical Android experience.

It does, however, have a modern OS -- Android … Read more

Samsung's Ativ Odyssey joins U.S. Cellular's lineup

Samsung and U.S. Cellular are teaming up July 11 to sell the Samsung Ativ Odyssey, a starter Windows 8 phone we first saw for Verizon.

The compact entry-level device, which costs $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate, features 4G LTE and a 4-inch AMOLED screen. The fair 5-megapixel rear-facing camera complements a 1.2-megapixel front-facing shooter. NFC is also onboard, along with a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 8GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot that takes up to 64GB in external memory.

While we weren't thrilled with the Odyssey's performance on Verizon -- … Read more

U.S. Cellular to sell 'Apple products' this year

Add U.S. Cellular to the ever-growing list of wireless companies selling the iPhone.

The carrier was rather circumspect about the matter in its first-quarter earnings release Friday, saying only that it "will begin offering Apple products later this year." But it would, of course, seem likely that a wireless company that sells devices like Samsung's Galaxy S3 and the HTC One V would also want to offer the iPhone.

Slashgear earlier reported that U.S. Cellular confirmed it will sell the iPhone. We reached out to U.S. Cellular directly and likewise got confirmation of that.… Read more

ZTE Director's got us saying lights, camera, cut

I have nothing against entry-level devices. As long as they work well and are priced reasonably, there's nothing wrong with these handsets for people who don't need to be on the bleeding edge of technology.

But while the ZTE Director is indeed priced inexpensively (without a contract, it's $99.99, but with one, the price drops to 1 cent), it's not a great performer. Its screen can be frustratingly unresponsive, its camera takes washed-out photos, and its processor is sluggish. Frankly put, the ZTE Director is more of a Tommy Wiseau than a Steven Spielberg.
