Tumblr lets loose its first Transparency Report

In an effort to be fully open, Tumblr unveiled a Transparency Report on Monday that detailed all government requests for user data. This report shows that in 2013, the company received 462 requests and it gave the government data 76 percent of the time. Tumblr said that from now on it will publish these Transparency Reports twice a year.

Tumblr activates SSL, but with a catch

Tumblr has begun to catch up with modern security standards by activating SSL on Monday. There's a catch, though: You have to enable SSL on Tumblr manually.

If you're not familiar, Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, allows for the data being transmitted from the Tumblr server to your computer to be encrypted. SSL decreases the likelihood of casually eavesdropping on people who visit sites with it enabled.

Tumblr pulls a Twitter, adds mentions

Seven-year-old blogging network Tumblr is finally embracing user mentions, aka the "@" reply feature first popularized by Twitter and later copied by almost every other social network, Facebook included.

The company made the announcement Tuesday with a Tumblr-appropriate GIF depiction (included below) of how the new mention feature works. Mentions work as expected: you can mention another person with the "@" symbol, and you'll receive a notification in the stream of your dashboard when anyone mentions you.

Tumblr experienced extended outage

Yahoo-owned Tumblr experienced errors affecting the entire blogging network for more than three hours, the company revealed Monday.

The company first alerted its members to the issue on Twitter at 12:02 p.m. Pacific. By 12:22 p.m., the problem still hadn't been fixed, but Tumblr apologized for what it called "intermittent errors" and said that it hoped to be back in service soon. The errors, however, took several hours to fix and seemed to be contained by 3:29 p.m.
