Finally, here come the 64-bit Windows 8.1 tablets

At least one major PC maker is expected to show an Intel "Bay Trail" tablet running 64-bit Windows 8.1 at Mobile World Congress, according to a source familiar with upcoming plans for those tablets.

Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo, and Samsung are some of the most prominent PC makers to offer Windows 8.1 tablets running on Intel's Bay Trail chip. To date, Windows tablets based on Intel's newest -- and redesigned -- quad-core Atom processor have run in 32-bit mode.

One of the most oft-cited reasons for going 64-bit is to address more memory, beyond the … Read more

Behind in tablets, Intel pays firms to use its chips

Intel wants to be a player in the tablet market in a big way this year. One way to make that happen is to bankroll a customer's product.

"Contra revenue," as Intel calls it, sounds innocuous enough. One of those murky financial terms that are ignored by people outside of the investment community -- and that's probably why it's been largely ignored to date.

Seeking Alpha, a site devoted to company earnings, wrote about contra revenue in November, and on Friday IDG News did as well.

The upshot: Intel is, in essence, paying tablet makers … Read more

Intel's Bay Trail chip arriving on Android tablets in Q2

Intel's quad-core Atom processor will come to Android tablets in the second quarter, CEO Brian Krzanich said Thursday during a quarterly earnings conference call with analysts.

"Most of the Bay Trail Android tablets really start showing up more in Q2...remember we made a shift, the original program for Bay Trail was all Windows," he said during Intel's fourth-quarter earnings conference call.

He went on to explain that there was a shift mid-stream to Android, thus the delay in Bay Trail Android tablets.

Android devices running on the Bay Trail processor were conspicuously absent at the … Read more

Intel CEO talks delayed factory, 'Broadwell' production start

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich discussed the start of the next-gen Broadwell chip, the delay in the startup of its Chandler, Ariz., factory, and new tablet chips during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call Thursday.

The chipmaker's net income rose 6.4 percent year over year to $2.6 billion, and revenue rose 2.6 percent to $13.8 billion. Here are some of the highlights from the conference call:

Fab 42 delay -- PC growth did not play out: "We have to start construction projects three years roughly in advance. They're very complex. If you go back … Read more

Intel: Don't expect tons of Android, Windows dual devices yet

LAS VEGAS -- Erik Reid, general manager of Intel's tablet business, says that the company's customers are exploring the Windows 8.1, Android dual-OS strategy in the face of Android's overwhelming popularity in mobile devices. But "exploring" is the operative word.

That, of course, is an advantage that only Intel has -- its chips can run both operating systems -- and one it wants to exploit it in as many feasible ways as possible.

Intel's customers -- the world's biggest device makers -- are looking into the technology, but it's not clear … Read more

Dell Venue 11 Pro: The anti-iPad

My first impression of the Dell Venue 11 Pro is positive. It's very different from the iPad Air but that's OK.

The Venue 11 has a gorgeous 10.8-inch -- an unusual size -- 1,920x1,080 IPS display, and the model I'm using is powered by a quad-core Intel Atom Z3770 "Bay Trail" processor with 2GB of memory.

(See updated impressions of the Venue 11 Pro.)

And Dell bundles Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 with the $500 tablet (64GB version).

I've been using it for about a week and the 64-bit Bay … Read more

Heads up Apple, here comes 64-bit Android on Intel

Apple's A7 chips will feel some 64-bit heat from Intel and Android next year.

Intel is readying a 64-bit Bay Trail Atom platform for Android, according to Hermann Eul, Intel's general manager, mobile and communications group, speaking at the company's investor day on Thursday.

"It's not only about Windows 64-bit, we've been talking about Android as well," Eul said.

An assistant then proceeded to demo on stage "the first ever showing of a 64-bit kernel running on Bay Trail with Android."

Eul continued. "We have 64-bit Windows shipping next quarter … Read more

Intel CEO taking big steps to overhaul chipmaker

Intel's CEO is putting the world's largest chipmaker on a fast track to change. That become clear Thursday at the company's investor meeting, happening in the shadow of a declining PC market.

Intel will open its factories to "any company" that wants to tap its leading-edge manufacturing capabilities, CEO Brian Krzanich said today.

To date, Intel has taken a very cautious, small-scale approach to making chips on a contract-manufacturing basis.

Separately, in one of the biggest revelations, Intel will develop a phone chip called "SoFIA" that will be built at a factory outside … Read more
