Toyota: Apple CarPlay, yes. When? Not saying, actually

For a little while on Wednesday, it looked like we had a date for when Toyota would start offering Apple's new CarPlay smartphone integration for iOS devices.

Then early Thursday, the automaker shifted from drive to neutral, with this brief note on its official Toyota UK blog :

UPDATE 13/3/14: A previous version of this article said Apple CarPlay would be in Toyota cars from 2015. This is incorrect and we are happy to put the matter straight. No announcements have been made about if and when Apple CarPlay will arrive in Toyota cars.

Next Toyota Prius Hybrid to have more 'heart-racing' design?

For the last decade or so, Toyota's Prius hybrid has been the go-to car for buyers wanting something a little more fuel-efficient, a little greener than the norm.

While still immensely successful, today's Prius has more or less lost its unique selling point -- a host of plug-in vehicles has taken away its crown as the most efficient car on sale.

Perhaps a new and more "heart-racing" design will help the next model regain some of its shrinking green status, as that's what Toyota is planning for some of its less dramatic models.

Sport rules the Detroit auto show

With the global economy on a rubber band for the past couple of decades, automakers circled the wagons, taking a conservative approach to their model lineups. But at the 2014 Detroit auto show, it looks like we can have fun things once again.

Toyota, that hallmark of sensible cars, showed off an exciting new concept called the FT-1. Although not meant as a production prototype, it shows that Toyota is letting its designers have fun, and hopefully presages new models with a more emotional appeal.

Likewise, Toyota's luxury brand Lexus gave its new RC coupe its North American debut, … Read more

Toyota FT-1 marks a return to cool

DETROIT -- For more than a decade, Toyota's most exciting car didn't actually exist, the company focusing on reliable sedans such as the Camry and Corolla. At the 2014 Detroit auto show, Toyota released the FT-1 concept car, a signal that its era of boring design has officially ended.

Kevin Hunter, President of Toyota's CALTY design center, called the FT-T a "spiritual pace car."

"FT" stands for Future Toyota, according to Hunter. This new concept shows that the company is bringing back sports car design, such as it used to have with the … Read more

Toyota shows off Fuel Cell Vehicle, will be on sale in 2015

For Toyota, the future of cars is vapor -- in a good way.

At the Consumer Electronics Show, the automotive company on Monday talked up its big bet for electric cars: fuel cell technology, which boasts no emissions but water vapor. The cars will hit the market in 2015, Toyota said.

While a competitor like Tesla uses pure battery power to make its vehicles run, Toyota's offering -- the first of its kind to be put on sale for consumers -- uses hydrogen to generate electricity on board the car. In layman's terms, here's how it works: Pure hydrogen is pumped into the tank and combined with air to create water, a reaction that also produces electricity. The fuel cell channels the electricity to a drive motor, powering the car.… Read more

Toyota makes Fuel Cell Vehicle star of CES 2014

While other automakers highlight autonomous car technologies at CES 2014, Toyota will be taking a different tack. The company will use the venue to show off its latest Fuel Cell Vehicle concept car.

Fuel cell vehicles combine pure hydrogen with air to create water, a reaction that also produces electricity. The fuel cell channels the electricity to a drive motor, powering the car.

Many automakers had active fuel cell research programs a decade ago, but their efforts went quiet as battery electric vehicles became the rage.

A fuel cell vehicle is essentially an electric car, with the advantage that hydrogen … Read more
